BF has X-wing Miniatures game, advice for GF on what expansion to get him for xmas

By LouiseA, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi,

I'm not totally sure i'm in the right forum area but I was hoping I could get some advice.

My boyfriend is very experienced with Warhammer, however he sought out something just as fun but a little cheaper. He loves Star Wars so he bought himself the X-wing miniatures game and we played it together, however he didn't find it that exciting as expansion packs are needed for the more complicated games/scenarios.

I was hoping I could get some advice on what expansion pack to get him for christmas to help build his squad.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! And apologies if i'm in the wrong area.

Thanks, L

This is as good a place as any!

I suggest you grab the Imperial and Rebel Aces expansion packs. They provide some fun options for lists without too much cost. If you have more to spend you could also pick up the Millennium Falcon and Decimator (or Slave-1). Those ships should provide you hours of enjoyment by themselves.

Alternatively if you have less to spend, the Tie Interceptor expansion and the B-Wing or A-Wing expansion by themselves are great sets that come with many useful upgrade cards.

Good luck getting him into x-wing! I know personally that warhammer is a hard hobby to leave, but each time I look at my wallet I am never sad I left!

And to help clarify, Angry is listing specific things for each faction. We're not sure if he prefers Rebels or the Galactic Empire. So in the above, you would be looking at:

Rebels

----------

Rebel Aces Expansion Pack (2 Ships, A-Wing and B-Wing with alternate paint jobs and ace pilots) MSRP $30

Millenium Falcon MSRP $30

B-Wing Expansion MSRP $15

A-Wing Expansion MSRP $15 (think Blue Angels... fast fast... except this pack is a red one)

Empire

----------

Imperial Aces Expansion Pack (2 Ships both TIE Interceptors which maneuver really well) MSRP $30

Slave 1 (Bobba Fett's Ship) MSRP $30 (another iconic ship that can eventually fly for the third faction as well... Scum and Villainy)

VT-49 Decimator MSRP $40 (not a ship from the movies, but very popular and powerful for the Empire lists)

TIE Interceptor MSRP $15 (odd that we would mention another box that already has TIE Interceptors, but this has THE TIE Interceptor pilot, Soontir Fel)

Just like in Warhammer, this game can be played at lower levels, but will require expansions to be more and more competitive. None are bad choices. If you know of something he really likes from the movies or comics, go with that... it won't really be bad. He will have to spend time with more than just the core set to know where he wants to end up if he is wanting to play competitively. You should be fine with any of these.

Good luck!

Second the above ideas

May I suggest another core set? Either the original or the TFA core set, whichever one he doesn't have. Having 2 core sets is a good starting point to having a solid foundation for the game.

Even a second copy of a Core set he already has isn't a bad idea, especially the original so you can fly mini TIE swarms. The extra dice and templates really come in handy, plus 3 ships would normally cost $45 (though the individual expansions do come with different pilots/upgrades).

Honestly, X-Wing is one of the most balanced and fun miniatures games I've played. Just about anything can be paid effectively, so the ships you fly are really up to personal preference.

What armies did your BF play in Warhammer? There aren't many direct parallels between it and X-Wing, but if I know the armies he preferred I can recommend some ships based on the general "feel" of his favorite faction.
