Army of Ents

By Denison, in Strategy and deck-building

Here is a deck featuring the Faramir/Ent synergy.

Grima helps mitigate the cost of the Ents (along with his keys), Faramir brings his readying ability and some inspiration with Ever Vigilant, and Legolas Mablung is there to help make progress pay for Ents as well. Almost every Ent card is here, so Entmoot is reliable for card draw. Having a first-turn Treebeard, ready to defend an attack, is a prime feature of the deck.

Awesome! I Iike the idea of a first turn Treebeard. The one change I'd make would be to swap out Legolas for Mablung. Better resource generation and early game willpower, and combos well with Faramir. Booming Ents should be able to provide enough attack.

The deck looks outstanding and I love the use of ever vigilant. I predict, however, that you will end up stacking a lot of purple resources with nothing to spend it on. You might want a parting gifts or an expensive purple ally like Gimli to make use of those resources. Just one or two cards would make the difference. You could probably cut copies of hands upon the bow or boomed and trumpeted to make room. Just a thought.

At first I was like, "Why add Leadership Faramir?", but then I saw what you were doing. Brilliant. I agree that finding another way to help him spend his money would be good.

With Sneak Attack 3x, Celebrian's Stone, and paying for Gandalf normally, I don't think you will have a problem with a stack of purple.

Also, since you are running Ent Draught, I'd suggest giving Beechbone a try over Skinbark.

Thanks! I always have it in the back of my mind to keep starting threat below 30 out of fear of Hill Trolls, but Mablung does make more sense. I took out Arod, since the heroes will likely be questing. I left the rest of the ranged-centric cards in for Faramir to use on occasion.

I overlooked Beechbone due to the deck builder not having that set loaded yet. He is added and now we have the full compliment of Ents.

Nice deck! This is close to my version of the Faramir Ent deck. I replaced Grima with Denethor and added Wealth of Gondor and Steward of Gondor (to play on the actual steward himself). Wealth of Gondor can give you the turn 1 Treebeard and/or Steward. I also added Gondorian Shield and Burning Brand for Denethor and Tireless Hunters to get extra activations of Mablung and Faramir.

I would recommand bifur instead of grima and of course dunedain hunter ... Removing most of the leadership cards except for one copy of the leadership quest and one copy of steward.

Also recommandind to drop ent draught and adding healers and other generic control stuff ...

Secret vigil is also necessary in this deck ;)

Excellent deck, this is close to the ideal build I want to try the Ents in. Though now that you removed Legolas, maybe you should take out Hands Upon the Bow? Also, is Steward not needed at all? That's a new one.

I've played with a comparable deck (Note: I've updated it since making that post) and found Steward to be unnecessary. I have it in the sideboard so I can play it cross-table if no-one else is playing Leadership, but between Treebeard and my version using Errand-Riders to shuttle Faramir's resources around (mostly to Pippin) I don't find I need Steward. Denison's version by contrast doesn't do the Errand-Rider thing, but he has Grima for cost reduction which would have a similar effect, albeit with more threat-raising.

Errand rider, of course. That takes care of Faramir's resources perfectly.

Many suggestions from previous posts were incorporated and now the deck is more balanced and running smoothly. Thank you for all of the feedback!

The first four scenarios of the Angmar cycle were all competitive and wins resulted about a third of the time.

The need for more card draw was apparent after a weekend of using the deck. Deep Knowledge was brought in and all Ranged cards were purged.

With extra doomed cards here, Gandalf was used exclusively for threat reduction.

With 12 two-cost-or-less allies in the deck, the herald reliably brought in an Ent or a key supporter.

Steward of Gondor can certainly be used here to good effect, but resources are typically ample without it.

How has this deck been working for you so far? Do you play solo or with more decks? I tried this deck solo and I liked a lot, although I was having issues with high threat (Gandalf isn't enough) and lack of shadow/trachery cancelation. I ended up adding some Favor of the Valars, and it smooths things a lot. Also, I think Feint is far superior to Ever Vigilant, even with ents coming in exhausted (to a certain extent Feint can count as shadow cancelation). I also replaced one of the Keys of Orthanc for Steward of Gondor. As personal taste I added Black Arrow, Gondorian Fire, and Ravens of the Mountain. Took out another Keys of Orthanc (not really a fan of that card, 1 at most works for me) and Celebrian's Stone. The deck runs more than 50 cards but works great. So far the only quest I haven't been able to finish is Escape from Dol Guldur (I might actually consider returning Celebrian's Stone to the deck since early will power is needed). Haven't played much quests yet but I'll be trying some others later

@JanB Your multi-player version looks solid. A top-tier Ent deck needs the possibility of a first-round Dernidingle Warrior (good) or Treebeard (best). One way to achieve that additional resource without Grima is Wealth of Gondor.

@Rajam This deck was fun until it stalled against the last two Angmar scenarios. Not sure how much of an indictment of the deck that is given the recent criticisms of those quests, but those scenarios exposed the principal weakness of this deck - lack of cancellation. Worse than threat issues was the lack of a response to overwhelming shadow effects and treacheries. Swapping out Ever Vigilant with Feint is a wise first step to address that issue, but I'm not sure it's enough to cement this deck as a consistent solo deck moving forward (and solo using one deck is my play style and what the deck was designed for).

Entmoot really helps thin the draw pile of Ent cards so that sneaky-Gandalf pops with regularity and contains the threat level. I was surprised just how often the unique allies hit the table. That said, careless piloting of this deck can easily result in threating out. Knowing how aggressive the encounter deck is with threat is key. Doom bonuses are best used in the first couple rounds to get things going, but used only in emergencies thereafter.

The Ents are so combat focused and unhelpful in questing upon entry that the heroes are consistently needed to quest and do little more. Hero-centric combat attachments mainly go unused. Black Arrow is one of my favorite cards, but the Ents don't need much help with attacking.

I also learned that Steward of Gondor, no matter how tired I am of using it, really helps to flood the table with Ents.

This deck is fun to play and I've had success going back to some of the earlier nightmare quests where brute force can carry the day.

@Denison: You are right. I focused a little too much on hero-attachments, so i will swap the 2 sword of numenor and the gondorian shield against 3 Wealth of Gondor. Faramir does not need extra resources.

I've been playing a multiplayer version of this deck through the Lost Realm + Angmar Awakened cycle alongside my wife's Noldor deck, and I've been really enjoying it. Here's my take on it:

Deck built with Rivendell Councilroom

My version has four ways to get the fourth resource needed for a turn-1 Treebeard: Dunedain Hunter, Wealth of Gondor, We Are Not Idle, or another player donating a resource to Bifur. :)

I have had a minor problem with it, however, and I was wondering if the rest of you have run into it too: sometimes Treebeard never shows up. Probably about 1/4 of the time, despite a mulligan and several Entmoots, I can go 8+ turns without seeing Treebeard anywhere.

The deck actually can tread water fine without him, but I can't imagine why I have had so many problems with it. Just bad luck, or have others noticed this too?

3x Deep Knowledge is key and will get Treebeard out sooner if you can live with the threat, which I find isn't too much of a problem in the current cycle.

We Are Not Idle is a great suggestion for not only the fourth resource but that one card draw effect is nice.
