Request - Avoiding Force Awakens Spoilers

By NGnear, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Anyone reading this who doesn't know that spoiler tags are a thing? Nope? Didn't think so.

Sure they're a thing.

But among the vB tags I've memorized, they're not among them, so I won't be using them.

I won't post spoilers outside of threads clearly marked to contain them at least until the first of the year.

If someone can't be bothered to go spend ten bucks and 2 1/2 hours to see a movie by then, it's not my job or moral obligation to continue to tiptoe around their entitlement, expecting that nobody talk about what might be the most anticipated movie of the decade because they couldn't be bothered to go see it just yet.

That said, I'm not going to immediately plaster spoilers everywhere on the 1st just because...but rather, I think that's a reasonable time for me and the rest of the people who've seen it to self-police. After that, the onus is on those who haven't seen it to avoid spoilers if they don't want to be spoiled, not on those who *have* seen it to do the right thing. They already have.

If this movie came out in the summer, I'd agree with you that 2 weeks would be reasonable, but TFA released a week before Christmas. Some individuals are actually very busy and/or very cash-strapped this time of year, so what you trivialize in terms of time and money may not really be trivial for everyone in Dec/Jan. Due to these concerns, it would be considerate to extend your time frame.

To be clear, I'm planning on seeing it later this week, so this wouldn't really affect me. However, due to travel I'm pretty strapped for time, and I can easily see where others wouldn't be able to make time for it.

Basically, I'm asking you to be a bit more considerate in handling this for the sake of community, instead of taking the "This is what I'm doing and anyone who doesn't like it isn't my problem" attitude you posted above. It's a busy time of year, and there's no reason to punish or exclude or otherwise create an imposition on those with less time or money because of Disney's release schedule.

Really, is there anyone who has spent more than a week on forums such as this and doesn't know that there are things such as spoiler tags? If they don't know how to actually use them themselves, it's not exactly difficult to ask. Basically, where there is a will to be helpful, your assertion that people have to be "proficient with forum software and its tags" is pretty weak. Anyone reading this who doesn't know that spoiler tags are a thing? Nope? Didn't think so.

Be polite and helpful people. It's the right thing to do.

The problem is no matter what time frame we use for spoilers then someone wouldn't think it's enough. So two weeks, a month, or whatever. The bottom line is if you don't want spoilers then it is your obligation to avoid them, and for heaven sakes stay off sites that discuss Star Wars stuff.

That is true that there are people who never think it enough. i have heard people who complain regardless of the time. (Even if it is Years later)

Besides that, I think Jan 15 is a decent time frame. As the last Major group to get TFA will be China on Jan 9th I believe. I am not sure how many members of the forum are from China but it does give them time to see the movie.

They are tags with the word "spoiler" in them, used as follows:

I find it highly unlikely that you can't remember that the spoiler tag is the word spoiler, so from here on now you do have it memorized. And as you say that's why you wont be using them, now you can. As I wrote earlier, it's very easy to ask as there are always people around happy to help.

Okay, the tags here are simpler than on most sites...however, try this on for size: I refuse to use them.

Plain and simple. If you don't want spoiled, that desire (and by extension that obligation or incentive) is entirely on the person trying to avoid spoilers.

It's already fulfilling the "don't be a jerk" prerequisite to just not intentionally seek these people out and give them spoilers, and anyone who confines their discussion of the film to specific threads for a few weeks is already well into the realm of "going out of one's way to be nice to people who haven't seen it".

Beyond the first of the year, to ask people to help them shelter and enable their not bothering to see the movie is asking way more than I'm willing to put myself out to accommodate. If someone doesn't want to be spoiled, it's up to them, not every other person around them, to either isolate themselves from possible spoilers (with a dedication to the effort to match their aversion to said spoilers), or to just...you know...go see the movie already, like everyone else.

Granted, under a week doesn't allow for a ton of opportunity, but half a month, during which most people will have a few extra days off...that's on them beyond the first of the year. If they had other stuff to do and couldn't see the movie, that's fine, but that's on them, and they clearly prioritize other things over seeing the movie, so they shouldn't expect other people to place a high priority on tiptoeing around their decision not to see it within a reasonable time frame.

I think you are being more than reasonable in your expectation for those able to see it. Especially here in the US or Europe. Places that opened this week or even those opening on Xmas. The only reason I do not mind the Jan 15 is cause of the China release being so far behind, I would even argue that even the 11th is not unreasonable.

Keeping to those places that are being labeled to having spoilers is more than fare practice and the when in doubt tag it is not bad, but I would not fault you to follow what you have listed after the First of the year.

Some people are putting a lot of detailed thought into why it will be OK to spoil the movie.

Be a mensch, wait a month.

Are you talking about that Facebook Group, "The Alliance to Preserve the Expanded Universe"?

Be a mensch, wait a month.

Go for it. Why not make it two months?

Everyone's safe till 2016...after that, the holdouts should be very careful.

Actually, with your attitude, you've reminded me of the best way to deal with people insisting on spoiling the movie.

Ignore user.
