You know, using the
tag takes no time at all, and a little bit of caution isnt all that hard, so people erring on the side of caution for the first week or so is not that unreasonable.
Me, I'm in opening day, so what others have to say about the flick is irrelevant to me. But being a nice guy is always a worthwhile endeavor.
It doesn't, but you're presuming that everyone posting here even knows about things like the various tags that can be used. You'll notice that tags like "spoiler" don't show up in the basic tools of the reply, so each poster would have be be proficient with forum software and its tags.
Request - Avoiding Force Awakens Spoilers
A year before spoiler tags come down sounds about right. The DVD should be released and not require waiting for a new shipment to come in before there's any on the shelves.
Tag it appropriately, don't do it in unrelated threads, shouldn't be a problem.
To those that don't want spoilers but don't care to see the movie when it first comes out I will give you until the first of the year then all bets are off.. :-)
AMC has some upper-scale theaters that are basically diner and a movie type settings. You pay for specific seats, so you know in advance where in the theater you'll be sitting. They do drinks and food before and during the movie. Pricey. I think I paid about $20 for the movie and another $30 for food and a drink for myself and my friend paid about the same.
I tried this once and really disliked it. I suppose it works if you are on a date and want to have a drink, chat a bit, while watching a movie. But, if you are there to actually watch a movie you care about, I wouldn't try this. More then once I was really into the movie I was watching only to be interrupted during a good scene by someone asking if I wanted another drink, is there anything else I could help you with?, sign this receipt during the climax, etc. We also were shoved up on a balcony for the VIP section...way back from the screen. It somewhat ruined the movie for me. Even if up close the interruptions were enough for me to never try it again.

Yhea. That must suck to have your experience interrupted mid-movie

Pretty much this.
If you can't be bothered to go see something that you care about that much...but you also expect everyone else to either not talk about it or make special concessions so that you can still browse as normal without having to worry about people having a discussion you'd rather not have heard/read the details of...well, I think 2 weeks to a month is plenty of grace period to give people to get to a theater.
I can see being nice and giving people a heads up, but at some point, the onus for spolier avoidance begins to shift from the spoiler to the spoilee, as the issue goes from "some people haven't had the chance to see it yet" to "it's been almost a month...you've had the chance to see it and have chosen not to".
I'm not planning on seeing it as soon as it comes out, but I am planning on seeing it by the end of the year, mostly because I'd rather not be spoiled. Personally, I can't stand the movie theater experience, but it's unreasonable for me to expect to avoid spoilers until I can see it outside a theater, and I wouldn't for a moment consider asking those around me to change what they do to accommodate my whims.

Well, that and the food here at the Austin iPic is worse than what I've gotten at any other movie theater in town. They try to be upscale with their recipes, but it's almost like the food is prepared in another city and then flown in on a weekly basis, or maybe they just buy from the cheap frozen food section at the local grocery store. But then, my wife and I aren't going there for food, so the quality being poor is actually a positive incentive for us to eat somewhere else.
Edited by bradknowlesWait - you go to movies in Austin somewhere other than the Alamo Drafthouse? If I lived in Texas, I would never ever EVER see movies anywhere else!

I’ve been to the Alamo Drafthouse. It’s not that great.
The food doesn’t measure up to basic fast-food standards, but it is better than what is served at the iPic.
The tables you’re supposed to put your food on are very narrow, and do a really good job of blocking access to the seats and not much else. They’d be okay for putting a beer on, except the beer would be likely to get knocked off by anyone who might pass by.
As a diabetic, I can’t drink alcohol — among other things, it is incompatible with my medication.
Then you’ve still got the problem of being bugged by the wait staff during the movie, and you have not-so-new stadium-style seats like you’d get at any Regal or AMC movie theater, and not the nice comfy recliners you can get at iPic.
If you’re a poor college student who can’t afford anything better, then maybe Alamo Drafthouse would be a good choice. Otherwise, there is absolutely no reason for me to go to Alamo Drafthouse.
All you fancy kids with your reclining seats and your dinner food...
I may not even get popcorn and a bucket-o-cola.
More to the OP's point: looks like the distribution, even among respondents to the thread, is predictably organic, ranging from "if you don't want spoiled, don't come here and read threads that might contain them, warning or not" to "I think it's reasonable for nobody to post anything about the movie for a year". Seems like the majority of folks believe that it's reasonable to refrain from posting untagged/non-forewarned spoliers for somewhere between a week to a month.
So that being said, it would appear that the burden of avoidance is on those who would BE spoiled rather than those who would need to avoid talking about it...so while you'll probably be safe for a week or two, if you can't bother to see the movie by early January, you should probably expect to stumble across movie details by then.
Does the movie release everywhere on the same day? If yes, then I'm leaning towards only a month or two for trying to avoid spoilers.
My reasoning is this. This is a Star Wars gaming site. We are all fans of Star Wars. It's fairly reasonable to assume that if we care enough about the universe and the game that we'll all be seeing the movie fairly early on. If this was some random game site then I'd lean towards a longer expectation for being spoiler free.
I'm also assuming that the movie will drum up interest in the game and there will be new people coming to this site that will have thread titles like "OMG!! TFA IS SO AWESOME!!! HELP ME MAKE A LUKE KILLER LIKE IN THE MOVIE!!1!!" I'm assuming that new people will get excited by the movie and will want to create something like what's shown and they wouldn't even think of not posting spoilers and would have never seen this tread.
Speaking of. If we get a spoiler length of time nailed down, can we get a thread stickied with it in the subject line so that new people can see it?
Well, it premiered last night. Special showings for the next couple of days until it hits the wild Friday. The Spoilers Awakens.
Note that there is now a Chrome extension to help solve this problem. See http://thenextweb.com/insider/2015/12/15/this-chrome-extension-will-save-you-from-seeing-star-wars-spoilers.
I’m sure that there are comparable extensions for other browsers, too.

Really? Being from Seattle and about 2,500-ish miles away, I've never been myself, but I always heard that it was a great movie house. Mind you, that's probably more about the movies they run more than the service, and I was just assuming that the food and amenities were good too. It's a shame to hear otherwise.
We've got a similar chain here, a place called Cinebarre - they serve not too bad food at reasonable Denny-ish prices, they have fresh popcorn with real butter (and not butter flavored oil), and they don't have commercials in front of the movies (they show student films from schools around the globe instead). Oh, and they serve booze there - meaning that it's 21+, and no kids to spoil the show. They dont do second run movies and archive screenings like the Drafthouse, but for first run flicks, I go nowhere else.
(Well, save for tonight - but only because the Cinerama was the only house in town doing all seven movies in a row)

It probably is fantastic, if you’re a starving college student who just arrived in Austin, and you’ve never seen anything like it before and you can’t afford better quality food. No one in Austin goes to Madam Mam’s for good Thai food, they go there for CHEAP Thai food. And that’s why the biggest Madam Mam’s Thai restaurant is (or was) close to campus.
The quality of movies they show at Alamo Drafthouse are fine, mostly.
But for art house movies, there’s much better places in town.
For places that show first-run movies, there’s better in town.
For places where you can drink alcohol and watch movies, it’s the less expensive/comfortable choice, but it’s not that bad and they’ve got much bigger screens than you get at iPic.
For places where you can eat decent quality food while watching a movie, I have to believe that there is better — and the iPic is more expensive, but the quality of the food at the iPic at the Domain isn’t any better.
That’s my take, anyway.
The only thing I can tell about this movie is: No animal was harmed in the making of this film.
You forgot the comma: "No, animals was harmed in the making of this film"
Having the American Humane Society monitor your movie doesn't mean jack ****.
That’s my take, anyway.
Well, if I ever find myself in Austin (a very, very, very slim probability), I'll still probably go, just to sample myself.

Does the movie release everywhere on the same day?
No it doesn't. I wanted to go and see it at the premiere but in my country it premieres at the 24th.
If you want to avoid spoilers be careful on Google+ as I hear that someone has spelled the beans. I would never do a thing like that even though I was lucky enough to be at the Middle East premiere in Abu Dhabi last night, I was dressed all in white with my brothers in arms #starwarsinabudhabi
I don't have 30 years to find out who is Po's father
I don't have 30 years to find out who is Po's father
??? That has already been revealed in the Shattered Empire comic series.
Since Star Wars is, well, fundamental to this forum, I think avoidance of spoilers should be respected for a short time. We don't want to ruin anything for anyone, but our community also has to function.
I would propose the use of the Spoiler tag/function/whatever you call it (text is collapsed until you hit a button) when discussing/including any material from TFA, for 30 days from the release (Jan 15?). I'm not sure how that little spoiler function WORKS, but hopefully
After that, I think it's fair that anyone who prioritizes seeing it, will have seen it by then, and onus is off the community to protect them. After that, it should be on them.

Then consider the above a message given to everyone who DOES know about spoiler tags. Or just putting SPOILERS in capital letters and leaving some space which I have also seen people do and is also not hard. Really, is there anyone who has spent more than a week on forums such as this and doesn't know that there are things such as spoiler tags? If they don't know how to actually use them themselves, it's not exactly difficult to ask. Basically, where there is a will to be helpful, your assertion that people have to be "proficient with forum software and its tags" is pretty weak. Anyone reading this who doesn't know that spoiler tags are a thing? Nope? Didn't think so.
Be polite and helpful people. It's the right thing to do.
