Chopper Crew. A letdown or awesome?

By Rogue Dakotan, in X-Wing

Chopper has become one of my favorite Star Wars characters, so I got excited at the prospect of having him on board my ship when the Ghost was announced.

I just can't imagine ever wanted to equip him on my ship unless I happened to have an empty crew slot free. While mathemattically, it's probably worth taking, thematically this card just rubs me the wrong way.

Chopper is one of the few characters who's always reparing the ship, the fact that he damages it makes no sense to me.

The only fact that it'll probably get taken is that he's 0 points.

I'm just feeling let down. I love chopper. I don't love this card.

I would have prefered a crew card that did something like this: U28yWGw.jpg

Crew: At the start of the combat phase, choose one enemy ship at range 1-2. Assign that ship one no-attack token. Then discard this card.

How does everyone else feel about the chopper crew card we got?

golden rule of gaming:

gameplay > fluff

we already have r2-d2 repairing, don't want to stack Chopper on top of that and the natural evade

the no attack one would've probably been broken, even as a one-shot (As adorable as that scene was, anyway)

Perfect. He is always trying to kill the crew (or Ezra at least). And his pilot is perfect for him being a troll.

I think it is thematic; he's holding the ship together to the point where it can still use its full abilities, but these take their toll. It's an interesting ability in any case.

Chopper is super good and you will see him everywhere.

Chopper is in an interesting spot. I honestly am not a huge fan of 0 point upgrades, because they become auto-include in slots they occupy that weren't going to be filled otherwise. But, having said that, I don't think anyone would want that ability for 1 point.

Now, it stays in line with what R2-D2 has given us as a crew card. For one reason or another, FFG has determined that astromechs as crew should have a positive and a negative (or at least they are sticking with the theme for now). R2-D2 gives you a shield back, but with the possibility of flipping up a damage card. Chopper here gives you an action, but you take a damage no matter what.

So, it works.

So, Miranda won't be tied down by a stresshog anymore?

Nice.

So it's a ship with no agility and he damages you even more so you can focus, yeah by all means take him I can knock ten hull off in the first turn of shooting, amazing card 10/10!!!

I like how R2-D2 kinda negates Chopper's drawback though.

I like the idea of Chopper rolling around the ship breaking ****, with Artoo following behind him putting it back together. :P

He certain has his utility.

And theme aside,

It seems like it's just a crew that you take if you've run out of points and have an extra slot. He's never your first choice, except in fringe cases.

Seems like Leebo, the certainty of negatively impacting your own ship seems really offputting, even if it's worth it in some cases.

I'm conflicted about this card. <_<

I didn't notice the "Ghost only"?

That GIF makes me want an alt-art Saboteur card with Chopper on it.

Oh, and things can also just be good or okay. Just because it isn't awesome means it is a letdown and vice versa.

I think it's fantastic. I love cards where you hurt yourself to do more damage, though.

Oh man yes!

Think it through your saying you love expose, and we'll have to shun you for it :P

Lemme guess, your favourite MTG card is Swamp?

For 0 points he offers a great ability. He'll end up filling a lot of crew slots that would normally stay empty.

If a K-Wing uses that action to SLAM and makes a green manuever each time it can ditch two stress in a round. It's kind of handy that Miranda can patch up thr damage she takes from Chopper.

It's been a very long time since I played Magic, bit isn't that a basic land?

Yes, hes implying that he loved black spells, which frequently have effects where you hurt yourself to do more X.

@OP - I like him. Action economy and I can definitely see where certain pilots could minimize the drawback. 0 points means lots of times you will see him because "why not?" I felt it was fluffy as well.

Chop's kind of cool in a B. Do a red into someone's face, focus up, unload 4 dice with focus and FCS. I take it a lot of people will use him simply as an insurance policy.

problem with chopper in a B is he costs 1 point instead of 0

Apart from what Hida said, there's also the old adage that the most dangerous card in Magic is basic Mountain. :P.

Hurting yourself for immediate gains is a very black ability. In X-Wing I'd more expect it on a Scum ship, but hey.

That would probably be the Chopper<pilot> card. Stressing out a ship so it can no longer use blaster turret. As for Chopper<crew> probably hot-wiring the engine to get the targeting computer back on. Sort of like robbing Peter to pay Paul maintenance.

Just theorycrafting but I think I like him on a low budget Transport. A little action economy on a ship with native regen.
