Help on list for first "tournament"

By dwaynehicks, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hello all,

I am going to my first ever tournament in a few days. It is for charity and I've been reassured its not all too serious. That being said, I want to bring lists that give me a fighting chance.

I've only been playing outside of my circle of friends for about a month now.

I've come up with these two lists for the tournament.

http://xwing-builder.co.uk/view/361266/omnicron-flight-#manoeuvres=hide

-I'll try to keep the shuttle behind a fighter screen (and close to Howlrunner) and thump away with the heavy cannon.

http://xwing-builder.co.uk/view/364549/kath-flight-v2

-I hope to get 1 to 2 kills on the first combat phase then dogfight with survivors.

Appreciate critiques.

To supplement this list I have:

2 core sets

1 Rebel/Imperial Aces

1 Most Wanted

1 Firespray

1 Xwing

1 A-Wing

1 B-wing

1 Falcon

1 TIE

1 TIE Interceptor

1 TIE Advanced

1 TIE Bomber

1 TIE Phantom

1 Lambda Shuttle

1 Star Viper

Hmmm, both of your lists have some problems that will make your matches an uphill battle for you.

In the first list, don't forget that Howlrunner's benefit does not apply to secondary weapons. An HLC is a secondary weapon, so the shuttle gains no benefit from flying close to Howlrunner (unless shooting at Range 1). Another thing to consider: its not easy to keep a large-based ship in formation with small-based ships. If you fly them too close together, there's a chance they will get in each other's way. The shuttle is also a terrible platform for a heavy laser cannon. It cannot turn around easily and once enemies get behind it, you've lost your biggest source of firepower...

In your second list, you have sunk a lot of points into missiles and torpedoes and no way to improve the odds of either hitting. Missiles and Torpedoes are not very effective sources of damage unless you have special abilities to help get the target locks and then still modify the attack rolls with re-rolls and/or focus tokens. So your hope of killing one or two ships in the first turn of shooting is not very realistic...

Based on what you have, I think imperials is your best bet.

I'm going to suggest:

Omicron Pilot (shuttle) w/ Darth Vader crew = 24

Howlrunner w/ hull upgrade = 21

Obsidian pilot = 13

Whisper w/ veteran instincts, FCS, rebel captive & advanced cloaking device = 42

100

If you are not comfortable flying a phantom, you can replace whisper with an interceptor or a bunch more TIE fighters. For example:

Carnor Jax w/ push the limit, royal guard title, autothrusters & hull upgrade = 34

Omicron Pilot (shuttle) w/ Vader = 24

Howlrunner = 18

2 academy pilots = 12 x 2

100

or

Omicron w/ Vader = 24

Howlrunner w/ hull = 21

backstabber = 16

3 obsidian pilots = 13 x 3

100

Which tourney are you going to?

Thank you for the very detailed response!

I later came up with a list that paired a Phantom with a clutch of TIEs.

So I'll adapt your shuttle list I think.

You should check out the Drew Bishop match from Worlds. First match of the top 16 he was on the streaming table. Unfortunately he lost.. obviously he's a buddy lol. But he plays Whisper, Howl and a few academy ties and he flies well. I mean top 16 right? One thing to consider is playing VI on Howl. That way she shoots before Whisper and gives you a little Rebel Captive defense on priority targets.

Good luck man, Long Live The Galactic Empire!
