My modest TIEs, the first Armada painting I have attempted, and my first minis painted in over 3 years.

My modest TIEs, the first Armada painting I have attempted, and my first minis painted in over 3 years.

I still havn't had the willpower to paint my ties... Keep it up, you are already 100% ahead of me there.
I have been doing some painting.
Here are my 2 imperial raiders. They don't have names, they die too fast. Even CR90s get names, but these? Nope.
Here is my MC30. It is a flesh torpedo frigate. This purple headed warrior has proven to be the bane of many imperial ships so far, and is one of the main reasons why imperial raiders don't seem to last very long.
There are some beautiful ships in this thread! I am just getting into armada, and it's been a number of years since I painted any models. Quick question for you: Do you guys strip the factory paint job on bigger ships off with simple green or do you paiint over it?

Thing 1 and Thing 2? you could later name them Thing 1.1 and Thing 2.1 ^_~
DWRR how do you get the panels to pop so beautifully on your capital ships? It looks to me like you're lightning down the base color and highlighting the outside edge of each panel.
Not sure I'd have the brush control or patience to pull that off but I've got pretty ambitious plans for my AF2s so I'd appreciate some "Pro-tips" ![]()
There are a lot of beautiful ships in here! I am just wondering though, do you guys paint over the paintjob the ships come with? or do you strip the paint off first? I am just getting into armada and am thinking about repainting some of them
I have been painting over but I have kept forgetting to apply a clear matte and so it rubs off if I am not careful
Added a little history to my second Shrimp, to reflect the hits these things take to get close

Someone in a thread I started (about painting) suggested using 91% rubbing alcohol and soaking your miniature in it for like 10-15 minutes and scrubbing it off, and it works pretty well. You may need to do it twice just to get all the paint off, though.

I always start with a pale base colour, straight over the pre-painted plastic. Sometimes I'll use a spray primer but I never strip the pre-paint.
I'll then use an ink of some kind, usually Army Painter inks that tie in to the overall tone I'm aiming for and to dark line all the panel lines.
Today I have the MC80 on the table. An ivory base coat has been followed by a blue/brown ink.

When that dries I'll add any additional panel colours (reds/blues/ivorys) then I'll start using darker colours to add shading, I usually assume a light source direct from above or I just make it up so it look good.
Then I'll add highlights starting with the base colour. This works as the ink has usually darkened what was painted as the base coat.
The ink is dry, you can see some rough patches, but we all know the camera is a fickle mistress...

As described above, I then used a shade colour on every surface that was vertical or angled down. The effect should vaguely lead to a blue ship when viewed from the side but ivory when viewed from the side.

That was a quick bit. Next up is the highlighting. Progress comes crashing to a virtual standstill. I'm now painting each individual hull panel that is horizontally placed and blending those at an angle. I'm taking a break with progress at roughly 15%...

Thanks DWRR that helps a lot.
I salute you tackling the panels on the MC-80. I hold that thing in my hand and it feels overwhelmingly daunting.
I'm gonna start my AF2s. Time for their baths ![]()
I havent tried Armada yet, but this thread is EPIC!
also, someone should paint some of those rebel ships to look like USNC ships from Halo. a few of the ships would be perfect!

Fist pass at the MC80 finished. Then there was a power cut so I was unable to do some of the little bits and bobs. Obviously I still need to paint the base/stand and then I reckon maybe I'll pick out some panels in blue and possibly a final highlight in white over the hull.

A few more views in my shipyard thread for those interested.
My take on the MC30. I'm not a very good painter, but I do love doing it. I wanted red, black and grey because it's an easy combo, and I wanted a safer option for painting my favourite ship. When I get another, I'll probably be more bold.
Went for a bit of a dirty look with a nujol wash. It's a bit sloppy when you zoom in, but I did that because IMO it looked more striking when it's on the table; a lighter colour just didn't look like it'd be on a battle-hardened ship. Also, I tried to get the front part of the MC30 to look similar to the rebel insignia: The two side crescents in front seemed perfect, I couldn't get the fleur de lis like thing in front right, so just went with a less detailed box. With some practice on paper, I'll probably revisit.

Accidentally posted this to DWRR's thread! oops
Dudes! How by Chewbacca's beard do you upload photos?
They have to be hosted elsewhere - Photobucket, imgur, etc.
Then linked here with the [ IMG ] tag
Gracias Dras.
U kids and yur fancy puters!
Sorry mates, I'd be much more attentive if I could buuuuut I've been doing a project so that's been keeping me busy that I don't want to blather on about... yet. I keep missing good stuff.
Well D503, looots of stuff I can say. Awesome to see those Gozanti and ATR-6, it gives me a preview, lovely!. But those stripes just really work on Imperial ships, I'm amazed. Blasted great job on 'em. I'm calling that pair of Raiders Griffon 1 and Griffon 2, though. It's too easy! That said, I don't ever think I've considered working the wing struts like that. Fascinating idea.
The Mc30 is pretty great, Sabine is right, but I feel like I should know what the base is... some sort of mollusk or some such. Anyhow, unique and definitely mon-cal fishy. Even if it does remind me of an unfortunate accident involving a now-lost toe nail.
Hey Eligahdprophet: I like the asymmetrical tie wing colours. Red Wings, very nice.
Funk Fu: Have we seen red banding on n Mc30 yet? I mean, I feel like it's just such a great natural fit that it should be, it's just totaly at home there. -scrambles off to look at a stock Mc30 as it looks totally natural- Apparently not. Well, yeah, very very good call on that thing. They do take a lot of hits don't they? ![]()
Fascinated take on that Mc80 DWRR. It looks like a command variant, not 'mon cal standard' and that's a good thing (so sayeth the rat!) The plates.... uuuugh the plates. I ignored them on the Mc80, I just couldn't do it. Mind if I ask what that blue blend shade is? It looks like some sort of P3 turquoise. The red striping, you know, like I said with Funk Fu, it just really works and looks totally at home on Rebel ships. Really nicely done, especially the masking. Planning on working up any more Rebs in that scheme?
Sir Orrin... I might not be a Halo fan, but I looked them up and yeah, that could really work. From what I saw, it would probably work pretty well on a Nebulon B. They look angular like that.
Ah, but liking painting is really the best part of it, Onca! It's nice, fun, and creative. Sure, red and black are a safe common combination, but unless it's an animated OC, it's used because it works. The rebel crest on an MC30... that's a very intriguing idea. I see it now but I didn't at first because I'm not used to the black Rebel crest against the red, instead of red on black (or cream). Looks good, I don't buy the 'not good painter' bit ![]()
Well, here's my delayed stuff: a pair of Raiders from Phantom Squadron (There's a matching Gladiator to finish it off).

Ha I did it! Alright gys I'm feeling really nervous now. 10 minutes of spray priming has eliminated the some Chinese artisan's finest work.
Next step. Base colours then ink wash.
God what have I done.......

First post, I just finished painting my Imperial fleet and I wanted to share the result. I was Inspired by one picture I saw on the forum here of a dazzled camo Victory and decided to work from there mixing it with some Caunter camo scheme.
Fist a family picture of the fleet.

Then the two Raiders

my lone Gladiator

My two Victory

And finally my Imperial Star Destroyer

What you think, So far I really like the ensemble effect it give. I also couldn't resist giving them some battle damage, I feel it give the model more personality ![]()
