The Armada Community Painting Thread - Keep your pictures here! Keep 'em visible!

Yeah I think it's working FoAS. Looks like the wash isn't overpowering the rest of the paint. Now if you have a steady hand and want to lighten things up more, get a fine brush and use your original color to highlight some of the parts.

I'd really love to learn how to take non-crappy photos...

D503, Norsehound - here be my attempt at a wash (bottom is "before", top is "after")

It worked fantastically!

I made the Liberator and Phoenix Squadron from Rebels. I like them so much I find it hard to make a list without these guys!

I applaud your brush control on that CR90. What's your secret?

Thanks! It was less painful than I was expecting it to be. With thinned out blue paint and a fine pointed brush it's not too bad hitting all of the recesses. The paint flows in there and if you go over you can wipe it with a finger without taking off the paint below. The only parts that took some extra attention were the dorsal and central turrets since those had to be free hand.

I am about half way finished but I couldn't wait anymore to share my MC80 Liberty custom. Hope to finish it by the weekend so it can see some action.

Large ship base or medium? Liking this.

Large base.

So cool! I love the coral reef look!

Next pick, can you please do a side by side with Home One?

Few responses again, gah, I really need to linger around here more.

Love that crimson Mc30c Polda, the little scuffs and scrapes give it a life of its own! I very much concur with ZenMastaT, the deeper red really makes the scale work where something more vibrant might not convey it as well.

-laughs- Hastatior, my style up and went on some Tahitian vacation at my expense, leaving me with an angry Badger that I just don't understand (translate it to 'I have no idea how to use a Badger airbrush').

CyborgNinja, thanks mate! I do love those blue X wings in particular. That scheme really is awesome. I like the alternate bodied fighters, they tend to be really striking, and I just don't see them too much. And thanks mate.

I'm still loving that Emperor's Children CR-90 D503, and the Howling Griffon too for that matter. A more perfect balance of colours there isn't (don't let my Medusans hear me say that!).

FoaS, yep I'm liking those ships with the wash. It brings out the details. Like has been said, if you've got a steady hand, then painting back on the original colour on the raised surfaces will really bring it out even more. You can also just try a drybrush, I found they work well for Nebulon B's and CR90's (and Mc80's for that matter).

Wes, that Liberty sure is pretty! That model just really works. I like it, I really like it. I keep looking at that one on shapeways and asking myself 'can I justify it'. Well... that answer is getting a whole lot harder now. Thanks :P

Tvayumat, you really are working those colours and they are fantastic. It's very clean, though I am surprised you didn't go with the white on the TIE egress hatches. Either way, it's one of my favourite around (do I remember right and you have some Raiders painted up like that too?)

Aaaah I was hoping someone would do up the Rebels ships, and you did it OccassionallyCorrect (and how!). Bloody great brush control and execution with those shades, it pulls off the look nicely. I mean, I copied the colour from... frig, I wish they had names for those CR90's, anyhow, triangle hammerhead. Anyhow, it's great to see and you pulled it off without a hitch, and Phoenix Squadron for that matter.. Congrats :)

I guess I should put up my new stuff. Not as good as the Mc80, but I wanted to see if I could replicate the colour scheme (for future reference). I can go with the radial pattern Mc30 when my stuff gets off of backorder. On another note, I have no idea why, but this ship doesn't want to photograph well! I swear, it's mottled hide is some sort of anti-focusing camo against my camera. Gah, I'll try to get a better proper picture later.

Thay symbol.... Painted or self printed decal?

Just had a brainwave for my MC 80 and it involves adding some symbols

Looks good Vykes, I like it. Try taking the picture from further away.

I managed to get some additional highlights and such done, on to engines and hangers next. Figured I would try to get some additional photo angles of the ship though.

Sorry this thread builds up quick. I can get some Home One shots later today. I want to tackle those engines!

@Vykes, that MC30 is simply lovely! great blend of colours.

Oddly, it's from the 40K Tau transfer sheet. I have a ton of GW ones I use for ID badges and the like, so I spotted that one and thought '... that can't be'. It's close enough that I could easily freehand the Rebel Phoenix 'wings' on the inside with no trouble.

-laughs- I would Wes, but that was from 2 feet, then 3 feet, trust me, it's a camera camo pattern. I might switch some batteries, try some settings, 'flip those levers!' and see what I can do for a proper shot. But bloody 'ell that Liberty is pretty. I'm not sure I'd be able to resist the Mc80a 'wingless Liberty despite the FUD pricetag'. Thanks to you, I'm not sure how long I can resist a Liberty! :P It's a pretty-pretty ship.

Thanks DWRR mate, it was fun but the Mc30's seams make my head hurt a little.

I hear ya, some times photo taking of the little stuff is a pain. I also hate that after you take a photo you see things that need to be fixed. Nobody else usually cares but the retentive in me sees it all  It is useless to resist.

Don't I know it! You see that one or two little 'details' and think 'Gah, it's hideous!'. There's always those little corrections. -sighs- and the older the picture is, the stronger the urge to go over them. And then one day, you start thinking of shipping them off for reeducation in the Simple Green vats. That way leads to the Dark Side.

got my third CR-90 yesterday. Already painted up. Again, poorer quality of photo than I like, but oh well.

Also, the red is not nearly as saturated in person.

I really like this..... but I'm still going to paint mine bright pink. Or even better, flesh coloured, so it is a flesh torpedo frigate.

more quick pics of my 400 point reb fleet sans fighter support

Loving the MC30 Vykes, my favourite of yours so far :) - I have not had time to paint mine yet!

I do like those darker colours FoaS, CR90's turn out to be surprisingly fun to paint. The H6 has a nice neutral colour scheme but the banding makes it feel 'finished', which is good in my book.

Aye D503, I was thinking of something like that too. The bow of the Mc30 does look uncomfortably like a fingernail at some angles.

That is a pretty neat 400 points Centerpoint. :)

Thanks Daft Blazer, the MC30 is okay, I like the Mc80 more buuuut I don't dislike its smaller cousin in the least. It was pretty fun to paint, but the next Mc30, well, I'm thinking of some conversions. Maybe some significant ones. But keep us appraised of what you paint up, eh mate?

Oh, and because I feel weird responding without a picture, here. Old but fun.

Which poses the question: does anyone have a notion of what is a 'safe' colour palette for rebels or Imperials? What can we get away with?

I don't think there is a safe palette.

There is a familiar palette, and there is what you do.

Because what you do is crisp, clean and cohesive, with a story backed assignment.

That lends credence to the unfamiliar, making it much easier to swallow.

Outside of that, we expect the Rebels to be Rag-Tag and hodge-podge... It sends up their desperation. If you have the Time and money to paint or build a completely cohesive fleet, then you've got too much time and money on your hands instead of fighting the good fight.

Beyond that, I do believe that the Armada model system itself lends itself to the fantastical... We tolerate colours and schemes that are outside of our expectations because, ultimately, they are gaming pieces. They're not perfectly scale models, they're not intended to be shelved and looked at behind glass only. They're intended to be useable, workable, handle-able Gaming pieces... And so long as we're not in the realm of Plain Red, Plain Blue, Plan Black and Plain White plastic, we're more satisfied with gaming pieces that have any mixed colour...

There's no such ting as safe colour palette for both.

It all boils down to how you make the colours carry for the ship.

are testaments to that.

Sorry to keep on with the same model but I tried a little different idea with my engines this time. Walking through the craft store I saw these little guys in the bead section. I figured they look like they would make great angine flare especially since they pick up the light. So the results were really good. They pick up the light in the room and look pretty sharp.

That is sweet!

I'm jus mad I didn't think of it. I've just been using a blue or orange metallic paint for the engine flare.

Ya I was happy with the turn out. I am going to go get some orange ones for my corvettes. I think what I like most is they dome out from the engine nozzel, so when you just glance at it they look fired up on the table.
