My very first X-wing.

I tried dropship's tutorial but the colors are outta date so I just wing'd it.

I went from three feet tabletop to give a better idea of how it blends together. If I tried to make it all 100% perfect I'd go friggin crazy.

Right now in the Dras Household:

"Panel Lines, Panel Lines, Everyone loves Inside Panel Lines on TIE-Lines!"

... I'm six down so far.

Hah...no I avoided them for a reason.

Right now in the Dras Household:

"Panel Lines, Panel Lines, Everyone loves Inside Panel Lines on TIE-Lines!"

... I'm six down so far.

Godspeed with all of those panel lines!

I've started on my 3rd ISD and this one I'm going with some inspiration from the Avenger card. I want an ISD with a slight green/grey/blue color. I mixed in a drop of green and a drop of blue into a grey and I like the way it looks. I created some darker green/blue/grey for some panel contrast. I then went over some areas and edges with a Nuln oil wash. Not pictured but I started with an edge highlight with a light shade than the base and have about half of the panels so far. After that I may make a slightly darker shade and back edge highlight but I'm not sure yet. Still have all of the windows and then engines to do after that...So many panels!

IMG_5509_zpsuzuzom2u.jpg

Yep 84 Imperial Fighters to paint... 48 of them TIE Fighters... So lots of Panel lines... 3 of them are even in Royal Guard Crimson...

But, this is the final step... Re-touching Wing Edges where Black ran over, Panel lines on appropriate ships, and then Green Blasters on those who have them exposed...

THEN its on to the 72 Rebel Fighters, and 8 Rogues and Villains :D

I do like the contrast BMcD... On the individual ISDs, and in comparison to each other :)

23 of 84... Yet to have the boy Nap, and that will provide more time to get more done :D

Hi,

Brand new Armada player asking for some painting advice for fighters please.

Am not a good painter at all (dont get chance to practice much) so what would folks recommend as easy method to painting fighters so they look good on tabletop please.

Any help is appreciated on this. Am looking forward to learning and enjoying Armada.

Thx,

Mark

Easy, get a pack of colored sharpie markers and a pot of nulin oil. Goes fast, and looks so much better than the plain squadrons. Plus, you can experiment painting as you gain time and confidence.

There is the above method. Although, one could argue its not really painting as there is no paint involved :D

For absolute basics, with Fighters... Just get in your mind what you actually need to accomplish to make them better than the bare bones fighters.

Its "not much".

If I need to hammer out TIE fighters in 5 minutes... I Spray them black, dust on some grey on the center eyeball and on the sides, and then re-paint the outside and inside panels black. Boom. About as quick as can be done. Drybrushing is quick, simple, and picks out the details on the Imperial side of things.

Trouble is, it doesn't really work for the Rebels...

For those, its a quick prime in a neutral gray. I slather over them in ivory... Then its simply a matter of adding what details I can...

That's usually:

A Black line across the front of the Nose, which then slopes back on each side, to create the distinctive X-Wing "Nosecone".

Then a Red or Yellow line across the sides of the Fuselage.

Then a Red line across the tops of the Wings.

Then paint the Engines and Blasters Grey.

Its all done with lightly thinned paint, and a small (0) sized brush. Absolutely nothing fancy.

Finally got around to loading some photos onto Photobucket.

The ISDs are ready for battle, Although one is painted as the Errant Venture.

ISD5_zps8oqsrs2c.jpg

For this one, I went with a midnight blue base color , with blue green lights.

ISD6_zpsnryf0fo5.jpg

The Errant Venture Came out just how I was picturing it.

My latest MC80 got a more original look, as the Idea for fading in a Red V struck me at 2 am about a week ago, and I just ran with it.

Nice work. Can we get a shot of the engines on those ISD's as it looks like you did some nice work there by the side shot of the Errant Venture. Digging the red ISD!

Jeff those ISD's and Mining Guild ties look dope.

The fact you even cut up the wings man...makes them look even more impressive!

Thanks for the painting tips. Will give it a try over next two weeks and maybe post a pic or two if they look ok.

Anyone got any idea what color I should paint the moldy crow with GW colors?

I do have a rear shot of the two new ISDs and the new MC80 on photobucket. I will try to get it loaded tomorrow.

Anyone got any idea what color I should paint the moldy crow with GW colors?

Easy.

Basecoat with Mournfang Brown.

Paint Swooping Stripe in Mephiston Red.

Wash the whole thing with Agrax Earthshade.

Edge-line Ship with Gorthor Brown.

Highlight Stripe with Wazdakka Red.

Re-pick out Windows with Abaddon Black.

Engine Radiator and Underwing Pylons in Mechanicus Standard Grey

Wash Grey Areas with Nuln Oil.

Paint Engine Glow with Increasingly Smaller amounts of Stegadon Scale Blue, then Sotek Green, then Temple Guard Blue.

Whilst we're on the subject of squadrons

My first attempt. (at painting any miniature) it went better than I expected it to. they're not amazing, and I need to touch up a couple things, but they're better than I thought I could do. Special thanks to Drasnighta and everyone else for all the tips. they helped a ton. I'm excited to do the rest!

Also:

Do you want me to show you a "Step-by-Step" ? As I have to paint a 'Crow sometime this week....

Sure!

Time to take a break from X-Wing repaints and conversions. I'd like to paint some of my Armada fighters at least one of these days, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I have, however, done some customization on some of the tools and such for Armada.

The symbols on the command dials and the symbols/numbers on the maneuver templates are decals.

I am now the owner of an all Black ISD with the store logo (Imperial Outpost, Phoenix, AZ) painted in red on the front. The custome painted ISD by the store was given out as grand prize for taking down the Store Championship this weekend so I now have 3 ISD's to conquer the Galaxy. Overall I like the look and think they did a very good job but I really want to add window lights to it. I would like some opinions on options for the window colors that would look good with it. I am thinking maybe a red ink that goes on first and then do a dab of maybe light yellow on top and then a white dot in the center. Maybe add a grey wash to the different levels of the command decks to help bring them out more and then the above paint scheme on top. Or should I maybe just stick with Yellow lights, or maybe do the same lights I have on my first ISD that you can see in the pictures with light blue and white? What do you think?!

IMG_5458_zpspbs54xrf.jpg

go wtih bright blue lights, definitely blue or a white with blue tones. it will contrast amazingly well with the black without looking over powering

"Those darn rebels....showing up unexpected...two galactic days early!"

I am going to have so...so....so much fun with this one. It'll be a tricked out gunship (Mk 2 A)

Alright, I guess I'll start with a bit of a peace offering for being so absent. X-wing stuff calls. WIP of something I need to get done right quick for a game.

5me6j4.jpg

The model is seriously cool, but the thick trenches make getting at the lights excruciatingly difficult. And lights are basically all I really need to do. That and the name: Astral Claw or Siren. Still stuck on that. C'est la vie.

Update: Well, got the Siren finished. More and more tempted to put some little marking on it but what that would be, I haven't a clue.

1zl998x.jpg

Naginata: one of the best rebel fleets I've seen Cohesive is interesting to see, but I rather like it because it always feels nice and dangerous. The red is a deep enough shade to be distinct yet not exactly 'bright', menacing with a nice colour contrast in the linen white accents. That each of the 'hero' fighter squadrons reverts to that colour scheme is likewise, a brilliant way to tie the whole scheme together while maintaining a uniformity. The added custom prints are exceptionally well integrated (Loving the Ortana YT2000, something I never thought I'd say).

But the customized dials, dice bag, now that is something special and brilliantly well done. Vinyl based stickers or stencilled? Seriously well done, very very well done -claps- And welcome aboard! Now that's a first post!

You're quite right Norsehound, I was toying with 'Alliance' again and that seems to be exactly what it is. I didn't think that my memory could be that 'off' from playing the game recently, but apparently it is. Ive still got to look into how the wings work on a Victory and what the surface is like inside. Aye, the MC40 is still one of my favourites too -sighs, wishing on that one again- Was Alliance the first game with the Lancer? I know that we had that, the remodeled (and my favourite version) of the carrak, there was just a lot of good ships in there. Fractlesponge's version really is perfectly good to me too. The hyperdrive has to do somewhere, and I like that all of those capable craft tend to be a bit longer. Most of my issue is with the weird almond-esque cockpit of the older versions. It's just this weirddisconnect between proper Ties and the Defender/original Avenger/Phantom

You nailed the windows BmcDonald, naaaailed it. It came out awesome. Well done mate! And the scythe is still cool :P I have a ton of these weird reverse details for it. Squares with the middle scythe there. Tis crazy. Promising work on the Avenger, can't wait to see it all done up!

The Isaribi is a pretty cool scheme CenterPoint. I like that it followed the.... I have no real word for the engine compartment cluster things. Anyway, I like that it kept the rounded look mirrored on the ,ain hull. It was a nice touch running down to the command section. And I'm always pro fleur de lis! The ISD is eye watching, makes me a bit cross-eyed to look at, but the logo is very cool. Why do I get the feeling I've seen that camo pattern before? Hmmm.

Gottmituns. Yep, seem to have got that Mk.II downpat this time! X-wings certainly came out for Red squadron. Going to do any alternate squadrons? Aaaah an Mk.I, goo, veeeery good -wagerly rubs little clawed hands in anticipation- Can't wait to see what you've got in mind for it.

See Reinholt, stellar MC30's deserve to be seen! -laughs- You are still evil for the tactics on 'Big Red' there.

DUR, I tried a 'movie white' VSD. I really did... I can't do it. And my paint basically said 'nope, screw you guy, I'm going home' then got up and left the model (almost literally). I used a white oil wash, waited for it to dry, and when I added another X20 thinned paint for a final little work on the extreme highlights. Wouldn't you know it, it spread in a radial pattern and lifted up -all- the paint. First time I could repaint a ship from scratch and not use simple green. Anyway, it's back to normal. I'll sit back here and watch from now on :P I'm certainly curious how the windows are going to look.

Good looking converted CR-90 there Viperous. I was wondering how it was going to look painted up :) The white on the modded parts makes it really stand out. And nothing is insignificant, it's still good inspiration and something to mull over for colour schemes.

Dras, you so cray-zay! I only sorta know how that is.

Can I take the day off from painting Ties? I've been busy painting but not quite Armada, still Tiiiiiies, I'll never get away from them. Now I'm starting to crave painting them all different.

2d6wqjo.jpg

Cynan, I rather like that middle ISD in particular. I've been mulling over how blue-green would look for a while now, but seeing it done is pretty convincing. Great use of the YV's as part of a mining fleet. That really feels right to me. Action IV's, hmm? I wonder if we'll see them as flotillas. They do look bigger than gozanti's but it might just be the mass.

Looking good Emperor Dane. Well done for taking the plunge! Touch ups are part of the game, though we often just call it 'detailing' because it sounds better :P

Eisai, you know I've seen the repainted measuring devices (click-stix) before, but I don't think I've seen coloured punchouts for them. Hmm, very cool. Dials look good too. How do they wear? Primer, any rubbing or the like? I like the high-vis nature of them. Helps when you're playing in a dank store, or a fire-lit garage.
