The Armada Community Painting Thread - Keep your pictures here! Keep 'em visible!

What paint colors did you use for those? It's a great "spaceship" color.

i use testor's camouflage gray as a basecoat followed by transparent glazes of sepia ink and/or black ink. I use a 91% isopropyl alcohol dipped q-tip to remove layers after its dry to decrease contrast if necessary. After the whole thing is glosscoated with future acrylic floor wax, i use brown, black, neutral grey, and china white watercolors for weathering/panel line decontrasting. I use plain water to clean that up if necessary: its all a very non exact craft :)

Re: the testor's gray, i got the recommendation off of the rpf forum: they've got some pretty obsessive studio miniature replicators there who will go and get interviews with ILM people to get stuff more accurate!

How do you keep up the inspiration to paint Imperial ships uniform gray?

Windows.

Its not so much the Uniform Grey - That's the Chore that leads to the Challenge for me.

I enjoy the Challenge.

And the Challenge is Windows.

So that's why my ISD isn't running correctly! I forgot to install Windows!

The 2 year old is Napping!

Quick, get 15 minutes of painting in....

(In this case, was some touch ups, and getting the Dark Grey Recess Areas Washed, so I can start on OSL and Windows on the two Assault Frigates)

Looks sharp wingman 29!

It has begun....

Black primer with a light coat of light grey over it for shadow effect...then with the "random" dark grey panels.

Saaaaaaaaay what would be an almost EXACT match for the engine color on the FFG star destroyers?

Dude...you are...wise...

I pledge myself......to your teachings...

This is my repainted Assault Frigate, along with the fleet :). Any advice, retouches I should do?

If anyone actually remembers this...

Using the word in the loosest sense possible, I got my first commission (edit:from my dorm-mate)!

Well, now it is spring break, and I now have time to finally get started! The primer is ready, the paint has been bought, and the Neb and CR90 are in the drydocks, ready for their new schemes! Priming starts tomorrow, so wish me luck as the best ventilation is either in the garage or outside.

I managed to convince my friend to add my Fireball to his mini queue. He takes commissions, but I used the ol' nudge-nudge wink-wink say no more

Well, forgot to post the first wip picture of the primer, and nobody probably wants to, but here it is anyways!

I missed a spot next to the superstructure on the engine block, but I decided to run with it, as it was pretty small.

At first I thought that I had overloaded the CR90, but it evened out as it dried.

All in all, not bad for my first time using spray-primer.

Now, today's wip picture. The first splashes of color go onto the models.

I was originally going to have the Neb in the Black and Steel color scheme, but reversed course when I realized how much of an eyesore it would be, and gave the Neb the White/Red/Gold scheme and slapped the Black and Steel scheme on the CR90. So far, only the highlight colors are on, and painting should be done sometime this afternoon.

After having a several month long brake after painting the squadrons from Wave 1, I've finally managed to start painting Wave 2.

First of, my two IG-2000:

Very simple paint job. Primed black with spray, painted with GQ's Celestral Grey, washed with GW's Nuln oil, and then just gloss varnish on the cockpit. Oh, and the engines are blue as well. It's not flashy or superb, but I like it. I still haven't decided whether I should add that blue line or not.

If anyone have any tips how to make the glossed cockpit look more... Non-granular (if that's a thing...), I'm all ears!

Secondly, here's my take on Scarlet's Firespray (sorry for the very bad quality):

pupDqqql.jpg?1

I used GW's Evil Sunz Scarlet (less vibrant than what you usually see), and GW's Celestral Crey (instead of white). The cockpit of glossed here as well, and the canons are Evil Sunz Scarlet, with a dot of Fire Dragon Bright in the middle. I'm really surprised that it turned out as well as it did. Sure, it's not perfect, but it supposed to be look at from a distance, in the middle of a 90*180cm battlefield, surrounded by other models. All in all, I'm actually proud of it!

Looking good!

What are you guys using to keep your teeny tiny squadron minis upright for easy painting? Excess R&V stands (see ya, YV-666 stands?) or something else? I tried painting mine on squadron bases but there's insufficient space between the minis to get a paintbrush in there satisfactorally.

I'm using q-tips. They are hollow, so if you remove the cotton-part, they actually fit perfectly in the pegs on the squadron. Also works great if you want to prime just a couple of squadrons with spray. Occasionally, I push the q-tip into a left-over foam piece, which makes it stand on it's own. That's what I'm using in the picture above.

Since I was a kid riding my bike to the comic store I've wanted to paint miniatures. Never worked up the courage to do it until Armada. Been messing around in the garage for the past month or so and I'm really enjoying the experience. Thanks to everyone posting their images here to give me inspiration!

And here's my first CR90 - before I understood the difference between base paint, shade, and layer.

Poor poor VSDs. They look so cool. Is this the right place to go to sit and stare at beautiful VSDs that aren't appreciated elsewhere?

Yes, it is. Of course, I've not seen any VSDs in awhile. Here's a link to a quick repaint I did on one of mine. Nothing groundbreaking, but it looks great flying into the fray. Still in progress:

https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/195570-the-armada-community-painting-thread-keep-your-pictures-here-keep-em-visible/?p=2031896

I'd love to see what others have done with their VSDs.

Oh, that's one good looking VSD! Nice job. Which red is that? Here is my take on the VSD's (although I plainly stole the idea from PenguinBonaparte in another thread). Nothing fancy, but I like it a lot! It also makes them feel like their own ship, and not just a smaller version on the ISD. I've also dry-brushed the back on the ship, trying to simulate "engine glow".

Here's my second Firespray, piloted by the one and only Boba Fett. The green is GW's Waaagh! Flesh, red is Vallejo's Burnt cad.red, and the grey is GW's Dawnstone. Cockpit is glossed, and the canons are GW's Evil Sunz Scarlet, with a dot of GW's Fire Dragon Bright in the middle.

dkewhmrl.jpg?1

The red is a Citadel Mephiston Red base with some Abaddon Black blended into the upper coats. I dry brushed a small amount of the MR on the outside edge of the finished panels to set them off. A lot of layering for such a simple effect...

I got my first custom ship! I've always liked the look of the consular, so I thought I would get one for my rebels.

Keep in mind there is some green accenting on it, for whatever reason it didn't show up in the photo very well.

Love it, one of my all time favorite ships!
