Anyone have a good/any idea on how to paint the assault frigate....

When I try to give it some flash...it just looks like crap in the end...red stripes on the nose look silly...I had a thought of making it look like a CIS ship but I'm thinking straight grey with picked out panels is best.

I'm usually really averse to showing WIP pictures that aren't specifically something for myself, but I guess it'll do. I'm a whole lot less scared of solid coloured ships now.

Back to the TIEs for a second: those inside panel lines are a killer and I'm not going to try on any of those fancy curvy-winged folk. I tend to go with batches of 6-9 for fighters because that's how I group my flight groups in game. -Laughs- this is a carry over so I get some consistency. Most of the time it's 6 for Rebels, broken up by something that isn't a fighter or my poor little claws would give up the ghost completely. DWRR is right, 'ze colours, she is glorious!'

Hmm, interesting StackEffect. It's far neater lines for their wash than I've got (who tend to have either not enough or a ton of speckling) Aye, Imperial stuff is somewhat interesting in how to keep it looking aesthetically Imperial but interesting enough to be unique.

An Ion particle compressor.... genius, I love that for a modification idea -laughs- 11 engines in a solid block, so some added features on the outside where there's actual room just makes sense, like the Sundered Heart Brilliant idea though for representing a Nav team or Engine Tech. Love it. I still like that round cylinder section, something about it feels right and in keeping with something like a CR-70 to CR-90 period.

I like the Nebulon B Escort as well -laughs- I have one I just call project patches But I like that it's a draft ship, mid-repair, love to see some day-time photos of it too.

This is why I start with a black base coat and paint the center bits grey. I think it is a lot easier that way.

I tend to go back and forth, Nickvar. A black basecoat is sometimes just so much effort to go back to straight up pale grey with thin paints. But I keep wondering if a liquid mask would just settle and make my life that much easier. I'm still not great at lines so that's something too. “it is unavoidable, it is your destiny.”

Lets see what I can do, Cynan. I'll try to get a direct shot when I get the chance but I've got two fairly close pictures on hand. Since then, the only change has been blocking in colours for the engines.

I've been really considering a lot of full colour ship schemes lately Gottmituns, They look surprisingly good and I really had suspected they would seem 'off' But I guess they work fine for the Republic era, right? .

Like I was saying to Zen yesterdy, it's not fair that a model could be so fun to paint -and- be so good on the tabletop. It can't be, there has to be some rule against it. Gah, now I want to buy a few more Rogues and Villains sets just to paint more firesprays, and I'm firmly committed to replacing them with my Assault Gunboats in-game! These fiddly little things are awesome. The mold lines kinda suck, but the windscreen is just big enough that you can do great layering on them, and the lines are actually really good. Yep, love 'em.

Your Kath Scarlett is brilliant. I just finished mine and yours puts it to shame!

You very likely did Dras, but there is only like 6 well known firespray patterns and Kath is in 2 X-wing sets. If someone already has Fett, what's the odds that the next one's gonna be Kath? -laughs- Trelix's orangy brownish colour is a little meh to me, Azzameen is alright, but I'm really excited about doing up a Mandaorian Merc or Jango next.

Vykes, that is by far one of the two best AFMK II rebuilds I have seen yet. So cool!

I haven't as of yet but actually almost everybody who has posted on here has painted theirs black, so I feel a bit of a Rebel

No but I really think it improves the actual "feel" of the ship, especially if you are using a black playmat.

Plus, it won't glare under lights when your trying to photograph it like the clear plastic ones do.

I'm trying REEEEEEEEEEEEAL hard to avoid buying stuff off shapeways until what I currently have has been finished.

I really want to do a Vader in a Eta 2 flanked by a pair of V-wings.

Are there any tips for painting the fighter and capital ships bases? Is it just simply a couple of coats of black then a matte varnish?

I am curious how you do those rebuilds Vykes and make them look so clean. Any tips, what you use etc?

Lastly I was painting on of my CR90's and was trying to take it off the stand and disaster struck. I twisted the CR90 instead of pulling up and it broke off the small peg that attached the CR90 to the clear stand. So basically my CR90 has no plastic peg on the bottom to attach into the stand, the plastic peg is stuck in the clear stand. What are my options? I am having trouble even getting the broken peg out of the clear stand. Am I SOL? Would FFG replace the CR90 model or am I thinking right that since I damaged it painting they will say tough luck, be more careful? Thanks!

Yep, after a complete disassembly, I wash them, then dry... When it comes to paint, I just dust the coats on gently so it doesn't build up too thick in any spot.

Then a coat or two of Matt/Satin Clear Varnish just to hold it on... Although I usually wait 24hrs between those coats to make sure everything is good and fine and not misty or patchy or flaking...

I have 3 AF2s sitting here. Can I just ship them to you and have you mod them, because this looks amazing.

WIP....

I really, really, really dislike how the ISD looks out of the box. It looks like Thing from Fantastic Four customized a destroyer: looks way too fractured with the high contrast panel lines. I also really wanted to go for subtlety and capture that studio model look/feel and make it less cartoony, as the ship is big enough to really be a model more than a miniature.

For the curious: the technique is a zenithal airbrush over stock paint job, then apply basecoat color as an ink (using Les Bursley's recipe). The ink is translucent so I just kept doing it till I was happy with the contrast (took maybe 3 rounds?) I then glazed some of the panels in dark grey ink, some of them once, some twice, some 5+ times all over with a tiny bit of Future acrylic to also change the sheen. I waited about an hour, then took a q-tip dipped in 90% isopropyl to streak the wash backwards a bit (I may have over done it...I think I may need one more dusting of the original basecoat to unify all the panels again, though I do like how it's turning out). What's left: the underside, which is still clean, fixing my mistakes on the non-grimey panels, and a few edge highlights. I'm in the process of picking out certain panels to do a brilliant coat of the base color/highlighting edges.

I probably need one or two more rounds of that basecoat ink to knock down the panel lines I don't want to emphasize and to help cover over the "painted" look that some of the bigger panels show. And no, I still don't know how to take pictures! Once this guy's all done up I'll look into taking a more stable pic with a poster on a cloudy day or whatever other voodoo I need to do.

Still thinking of a name for her: I was thinking the "Fifty Shades of Grey" but I think that's best left for a Slaaneshi or Dark Eldar cruiser.

No, I don't think FFG will cover it. They only cover transit damage or faults found when the product was opened.

I have broken two CR90s and I have repaired them in the same way - here is how I did it (Although there are other ways that I have heard of).
