The Armada Community Painting Thread - Keep your pictures here! Keep 'em visible!

By DWRR, in Star Wars: Armada

This may seem dumb, but I'm thinking about painting my fleet, and am wondering if the ships straight from the expansion pack accept paint well, or if custom orders are needed.

Also, will acrylics be fine or will I need to buy new paint?

Acrylics are Fine.

The community is 50/50 split on it.

personally , I find that I have to dust it with a primer first, after giving it a wash... Otherwise, with the handling they get, paint jobs just rub off super quickly...

But a lot of people will say its not entirely necessary.

I'm painting a Venator for Armada...was curious what would be the best match for the FFG paited ships?

Drasnighta Thanks! They won't be getting heavily painted, just some blood-red markings for my Imperials.

Games Workshop Administratum Grey is usually a close base as long as your FFG painter didn't over wash the ship.

I finally had time to transfer photos over to photobucket.

Here are just a few.

Nara: I do remember DWRR 's VSD and I was wondering what a fleet would look done up in it. I do think that the VSD's and ISD take pattern the best but I wonder if that's just from the raised command deck. All of 'em are good though. Did you happen to do anything matching with those fighters or 'villains'? Either way, they're lovely and the patterning does strike me as very similar to the phtographs I recall of the pattern. As for the Rebels... good question.

You know, I don't recall any colour plates of note in any technical book for Star Wars that I've seen. They've all been in blueprint black and white, or snippets of the cross section being just the standard movie colours. Some of the comics might be different... isn't there a bank McQuarrie's concept art around? Or cover art from the EU books? So aside from that, some old comics, and Rebels, I can't think of many sources. Hmm, Hiigara ,wasn't that a green and orange? A lot of the ships themselves work remarkably different because of the designers and companies. Mon Cals paint up differently compared to the Corellian and Kuat stuff because of the angles. The most I could say is 'have you considered 'task forces' that are similr but different? Group mon-cal into one, maybe with the Assault Frigate, then CR90's and Nebulon B's in another? It's just a thought of course. Again, while I think that Rebels likely wouldn't be a pirate fleet, they might very well source ships from pirates and mercenary bands.

The battletech idea is really really good. Between that and Crimson Skies, I might go looking for some inspiration too.

Frankvas , those corvettes are terrific! It's amazing what even just a little ink will do to these ships, but those colours are nice and diverse. The orange, red, and white one is a particular favourite as I can't get orange to work as a colour, but the green and yellow is a fun look. The difference between a colourful body and the more utilitarian engine block is pretty neat.

Good to see some ships from you too, Cynan! Those washes over ISD's do the trick real well. That name... Impovrisher, it's how I feel after getting a few of them, that's for sure :P That Pelta is a lot larger than I thought it was... you may have just sold me on it :P the Arquitens I'm now looking forward too, customs frigate is nice, is that an Acclamator or a Vigil class in the Imperial task force? The Venator's impressive and it's not evne a ship I particularly like. But you did it justice,

Thanks DWRR , I may have to look into that. I eschew P3 colours because I've had nothing but problems with the whole line so far (they separate, they give next to no coverage, and their ink wash was abysmal). I could have easily gotten a few bad batches... wouldn't surprise me, Shapeways has been vaguely like that in my experience. I seem to be semi-unlucky there. Maybe I should just hire a personal shopper to get all my paints for me. Anyhow, I may try a colour like that some time, it's pretty. I hadn't even considered the lines and masking -laughs- that's one advantage of the Mc80's absolutely dizzying amount of plate lines. I think I mentioned the Mc30 and Scrugg... Scurg.... the Reb's bombers, in the other thread but anyhow, they be marv'lous cap'n!

Alright, I've been sooorta delaying a bit of stuff but I do have at least a preview. I finished a commission and I guess it's safe to put up a preview or two. The vast majority will be on the Ceknell thread in a day or two as it only seems fair to put them there first But I'll add a preview here 'cause I hate not having something to offer such a wonderful thread.

fngra.jpg

After a proper introduction there, I'll pop back over and add in some better pictures here. He was a treat to work with and I this was a ton of fun. Lesson learned, blue lights are best lights.

I got some fun new Shapeways stuff in (and some more on the way) but I don't want to risk the thread, so I'll put me own in danger instead.

Thanks to the suggestion about battletech houses I finally had a moment of inspiration for my rebel fleet, here are the first two test.

Ok really bad phone picture quality, sorry about that gang. So I decided to go with painting my rebel ships in various Rokugan Clan color, I even tried to hand paint their clan mon on the ship, which was a pain but should be easier on the bigger ship. That way I'll have a rebel ship with ships of various color which was one of my principal requirement, it should also contrast nicely on the table with my imperial fleet once everything is done. Here I tried to be thematic so I painted the CR90 as the Cran clan who are big on court and diplomacy, which I thought was fitting for a senator's ship. The Nebulon B is painted in the mantis color, as it was mostly a test yet I found the decent front arc weapon fitting for the clan's renowed archers.

I'll do other ship as I have the time for them and I'll keep you posted.

So you have come to the blue side eh Vykes?

So a question I'm trying to post Pics of some of my repaints to show all but my question is how do I do so?

I'm liking what I'm seeing Nara. It would be grand to get some clearer untinted pictures of course but it looks pretty good. I do wish I could see that emblem. That does look like a particularly shadowy Rebel force... I'm going to have to go to an expert on the clan colours and the like. Hmm, that white highlight detail, is that directly painted on or are you using a high shine metallic? It looks great either way, just curious as I don't see metals used in the Star wars setting much (all I can think of is the Naboo ships and the Captain from the Force Awakens). I'm certainly looking forward to more.

-laughs- I love blue, Wes. I just have been trying to avoid it on anything that isn't an engine because it gives me this weird feeling like there's a terrible reactor leak inside the ship (Although Fallout: Empire of Shadows on an ISD might be interesting). And I have too many blue models elsewhere :P But yeah, it's pretty awesome. I'll admit the azure call is strong and I was wrong, it looks great :P Now I wonder if green would be interesting.

Right Zephyre, you'll have to make an account at an image hosting site (tinypic, Imager, photobucket, I think Google Drive may work now too) and upload your images there. Each of those images should give you a direct image link address. Take that link address, and you can plug it into the editor's 'picture' button (11 th from the left on the bottom row, just to the left of the < >) or with the [ IMG ] image.address.here [ / IMG] tags (just take out the spaces). Then it should show up here.

Cruiser, I was just about to ask what the name of that particular GSD was, I like Prince Eugene. Not the least of which because I adore heraldry and coats of arms! I wish Imperial ships had more proper heraldry and emblems, it's just so suiting for a stately ship to have some marking like that. But that final show of the trio of GSD's might actually be the most intimidating perspective I've seen of a GSD. I can't pin down exactly why, but there's something about it that makes that picture really stand out for me.

I actually wanted to keep to the original Germanic name, Prinz Eugen, from the Admiral Hipper class BUT I decided to go for the Anglicised version of her name so it matches well with Prince Rupert and Prince Albert.

In one point of this project I've been working on, the name thing did come up about Anglicizing or I suppose Arubeshizing these kind of names. I actually used the Prinz Eugen as a basis and turned it into the Moff Keiruss ; I still wish I knew why the Empire or Republic didn't have similar naming conventions. Either way, I rather like the changed designations. All those weird super aggressive ' Agonizer, Demoralizer, Grimdarkinize r' Imperial names feel more like call signs, like 'Home One' might be -is quickly muzzled before gets into that debate-

Alright, for the painting related question of the day: What are people doing for hangars and the bottoms of ships? Do you pay as much attention to them as the tops, or are they sort of 'Kilroy was here' blank pages?

You know... You have the same thinking as me.

I'm putting it as Prince Eugene the Demolisher or Bismarck the Relentless

And the heraldy was actually leftovers from Tamiya's 1/700 Prinz Eugen

Thanks Vykes

Hopefully this works below are the pics for my AFM2 repaint

since it was my first Armada repaint just redid the reds to green added an extra green area and gave it a wash

The bottoms all my ships are black, or the colour of darkest shade used on the model. No detail no nothing. Flat colour. It's just so much quicker and easier and you 'never' see the underside of the ship at any point in the game...

Ha I did it! Alright gys I'm feeling really nervous now. 10 minutes of spray priming has eliminated the some Chinese artisan's finest work.

Next step. Base colours then ink wash.

God what have I done.......

Hey @BigBearCDN how's this MonCal going?

So second repaint Imperial this time

I'm really happy with this one especially since the colour pallet was decided almost as I was doing it

Welcome the 156th "Bloody Brawlers" Fleet. IMG_20160114_102226513_zpswx7omen2.jpg

Still need to touch them up, wasn't happy with how the Raider turned out, might redo it. Anyways, welcome the ISD Bloody Sword, VSD Hope's End, and the Raider Night's Dagger.

Small beginnings. Just some window lights on the starter box VSD, and slightly tarted up TIEs.

Did you prime the TIE's or just paint the black sections?

Seems to be working right good Zephyre. That's a nice green tone on the Assault frigates, always good to see (Green seems pretty rare now that I think about it). I like that Raider, it's a good idea given the model (You did send out to FFG for a replacement I hope). Mc30 is a touch saturated but it might just be that the panel lines are a little indistinct from the lighting.

Hey Cruiser, the Gneisenau looks pretty god to me, Dazzle pattern plus bright red, fascinating. Is that a deep red/crimson central surface?

Interesting look Lanediger, I'm glad to see some pretty unique patterns and styles around too. The red really makes the grey look pretty bright, doesn't it? The ISD patterning works really well but there is something different about that Raider. Hmmm, it's close but why.

Alright, after thinking about it for a little bit, -if- you decide to redo it, then there might be a way to tie it in closer to the pair of big ships. The ISD and the VSD have their trailing edges in red, making an oblique pattern that is different from the horizontal and partial vertical pattern of the raider. So, perhaps making the solar panels of the Raider red (or the struts) and then the prow red-tipped like the ISD would help unify the look. Not trying to be discouraging, just parsing out why it's 'different'. :) Liking the names. Hope's End is a real stand out for me!

You know CheeseyRobMan, the windows really do give a sense of scale, don't they? Hmm, that's some pretty consistent bracketing on the inside panels of those TIEs. Got a secret for that, mate?

Aye, I'll admit I'm usually reaaaaally lazy about the bottoms of ships myself, DWRR. I did make an exception for some work I did, and it sorta stuck out as 'am I the only one who pretends the bottom isn't there?” t's true, you never see the bottom... but it vexes me.

So I did some experimentation.
