I really, really, REALLY dislike flying with Twin Laser Turrets

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

I played only my second game with them last night, and I doubt I'll be using them again. Fielded Bossk and two Hired Gun TLT wingmen, and although Bossk was fun enough the Y-Wings just felt cheap, dirty and above all, dull as ditchwater.

Yeah, they're good. They're efficient. They can relentlessly munch through low agility ships, and taken in numbers they can slowly but steadily chip tokens, shields and hull away from even the most arc-dodgiest and agile opponents.

But my God, they are JUST SO BORING.

Three hits? That'll be one damage! Two crits and a hit? One damage! WOOOO!

Yeah. Great.

Cal;l me Mr. Picky, but I think at least half the fun of the game is (potentially) being able to one shot ships with a single attack, or cause hilarious critical effects, neither of which are possible with TLTs.

I'll stick to my Kihraxz and ManglerScyks to pad out my Scum lists, I think. Or - if I can scrounge up the cards - Integrated Targeting Astromech T65's for my Rebels.

I agree. I find them especially dull when each player is fielding two (or more) TLTs. I have been using them as a crutch myself, they are simply very efficient while still leaving around 50 points for other stuff (if using two).

Contrary to belief you can fly TLTs creatively. Use them as psychological weapons, create danger zones in which the opponent should never drop the soap for any reason.

When you take away people's ability to get their guns into R1 without pre-planning, take a PTL-focus and then one-shot something with 3-4 dice they call it dull and boring.

I say the dullest thing ever was EU on a PWT.

Second dullest thing ever was old Whisper. Either you eat him raw or he eats you raw.

Third dullest thing ever was and is "guess what? 2 hard green turn"

Yeah I've used them once and I didn't feel great about the win they handed me, I don't think I'll be using them much just feels like a cheap way to beat the other guy.

I'd use it on a K-Wing with Tactician, gives you some challenge flying them.

Otherwise I think I'd prefer flying dodgy ships that can dish out 4 dice at range 1 and then modify them

I used them with BTL-A4 and it was delightful.

Oh, I won't discount BTL-A4 (at least you have to think about your manuevers with the title equipped) - but I still think I'd prefer the Ion Cannon in that case (especially combined with Mr. Stressbot)

The only turret I like is the Ion. But then, I love control lists. It's the cat in me toying with his prey.

I use a few in epic because they open up manoeuvering possibilities. In normal 100 point games, however, they are just not my style (have no problems fighting against them though, they are easy to control / destroy).

Overall I think they're a good option and healthy for the game. But aside from unique pilots I want to fly (Jan and Miranda, BFFs) I tend to leave the TLTs in the box. I almost always prefer to use a 3ATK ship instead since it offers similarly consistent damage against 0-1AGI targets but offers a prayer of hitting 3AGI.

I agree that they're a bore, but they seem to be the primary reason why the meta is no longer Fat Turretwing. Large ship MoV nerf helped too but I think it was more so TLT's that stopped them from being in every single list.

So yeah, when someone throws 6 TLT attacks at your B-Wing and leaves it with 2-3 health it's a bit annoying, but much less annoying than having to face a fat boosting turret in every squad.

It's "dishwater" not "ditchwater".

This, this I approve...

That Tie Adv is sooooooooo sexy......I think I'll have to try a First Order defender or adv repaint next week.

Just wow.

Protip: if you're going to attempt to correct someone, at least make sure you're right first.

Now, do you have anything worthwhile to contribute to the topic?

What's "dishwater?" Maybe his dishwater is really, really interesting, but the water in the ditch near his house is boring as the dirt its sitting in.

Just saying. I personally find ditch water more interesting than dishwater, but that's just an opinion.

I don't think calling any game element "boring" after two games is really justifiable. There is depth there*. Particularly for Bossk YY.

* depends on the opponent list, as always

You're right about the advantage of a 3 attack ship hitting a high agility target, but the advantage of the turret is they're going to be firing just about every turn and are never out of arc. You're trading a high quality attack that occurs maybe every other turn (based on your ability to keep the enemy in arc) for a lower quality attack that can occur every turn.

TLTs can focus fire on a ship multiple rounds in a row. Back in the day, you had to be a pretty decent swarm flier in order to ensure multiple attacks on a single ship for consecutive turns. Now you just have to fly a few TLTs. As a result, one has to either fly high agility ships or be prepared to lose roughly a ship every other turn when facing quad TLTs.

While I agree that TLTs aren't as bad for the game as the Fat Turret meta, 1-2 difficult to kill turrets have been traded for spammable turrets. They're not good for the game, just a lesser evil.

Also not a fan even though Boba or Bossk + 2 Thug TLT's are very effective.

When trying out new builds I run test matches against known-good builds and trying to demolish a list I like is the only time I enjoy flying them, but it's the same enjoyment I have from taking a hammer to a wall and knocking the bejesus out of it

I don't like TLT meta either. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

I'm a little bored with Y-wings in general. They could really use something to spice them up a little. They're undoubtedly solid, but I don't see much outside of the Y-wing fortress or the random Gold Warthog here and there. I think they have a lot of versatility potential, I just never see it.
