Double Bladed Lightsaber

By Arrakus, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

If one of your players had the Makashi Technique (or other similar talent) with a Presence of 4, would you let them be able to use the double bladed lightsaber and allow them to use their Presence to substitute for Agility to meet the Unwieldy 3 requirement?

Apologizes if this has been discussed/answered before.

Nope.

I would not.

The difference in Characteristic for the Lightsaber technique should, and does, only change because of the 'style' used. That would be much the same as asking if the Electro-Staff (which has Unwieldy 3 [Double-Bladed Lightsaber should only be Unwieldy 2 unless I missed something]) can be used with Brawn 3, because that's the skill needed to make the check anyways.

It's a limitation. Designed to keep everyone from jumping at what would otherwise be an OP weapon.

No.

They still require Agility 3 to have no penalty for using that weapon. The Lightsaber Form talents only change the Characteristic that the Lightsaber skill is associated with. It's the balancing element to the Linked Quality, a very powerful weapon quality in the hands of someone who has a good dice pool for their Lightsaber skill.

Edit: Sniped!

If they have Agility 2 then the weapon is essentially the same as using 2 Lightsabers (both options increase difficulty by 1 and for 2 Advantage allow a second hit to be scored), except the Lightsabers can have different crystals, more attachments, can be Shoto's for the Accurate quality etc. They probably should be looking at 2 Weapon Fighting instead.

Or just suck it up and stop trying to Exploit!

Double-Bladed Lightsaber should only be Unwieldy 2 unless I missed something

It's Unwieldy 3 in the FaD Core Rulebook, after being at only a rating of 2 in Beta. It was the general consensus that Unwieldy 2 was not enough.

Nope, Agility 3 is a non negotiable.

Ah, okay. It was 2 in Alpha as well. That's where I got confused.

I agree, though. 2 is not enough.

Much as a Shii Cho knight cannot substitute their Brawn (the default characteristic) for Agility in the case of Unwieldy, neither can anyone else with their saber form characteristics.

Thought as much and agree.

As always, appreciate the discussion.

I wouldn't because the simple reason that in order to wield a double saber correctly, there is no replacement for proper coodination. Agility and brawn repersent reflex and physical condictioning/stamina respectively and thus it is importent that those aspects retain their importance in the system as apposed to a replacement for either. Thus if a pressence character wants to carry a double ender; he's gonna have to train something other then his vocational skills.

It's why I was never a fan of the LS skill being used with anything other then brawn or agility; because arm chair tacticians that never train their bodies as well as their minds/connection to the force shouldn't be good with a lightsaber as their bodies won't preform in a way the mind expects during critical moments. Though thats just my opinion, but the current implimentation feels too silly.

That's why they are Force talents. And what is a Jedi without the Force?

Reminds me of a discussion from KotOR II...

Atton: "If she served in the war... well, Jedi are supposed to be tough. Capable."
Kreia: "Yes, and what are they without the Force? Take the greatest Jedi Knight, strip away the Force, and what remains? They rely on it, depend on it, more than they know. Watch as one tries to hold a blaster, as they try to hold a lightsaber, and you will see nothing more than a woman – or a man. A child."

The "technique" talents allow the Jedi's connection to the Force to manifest itself as skillful lightsaber play in a game-balanced way.

Don't forget that Unwieldy is also found with the electrostaff, a melee weapon that those special talents don't affect in any fashion.
