Ion Cannon Batteries ordering

By SomeKittens, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

Do I get to choose the defense token before or after they use their defense tokens. Logic says it'd activate at the same time as a regular crit (i.e. when handing out damage, so post-spend of defense tokens) but I thought I'd double check.

Logic has a way of being right :D

The same applies, of course, to NK-7 Ion Cannons - and the order of interaction is far more critical in this case.

1. Declair target

2. Roll attack dice

3. Resolve attack effects

-modify dice

-spend accuracy

4. Spend defense tokens

5. Resolve damage

- Declair critical effect

- sum damage

So assuming you are asking about the critical effect, the defender gets a chance to resolve his tokens before one is discarded.

I think you may be referring to Overload Pulse?

Ion Cannon Batteries forces your target to discard a command token, not a defense token.

Now for overload pulse, your opponent would get to spend their defense tokens before overload pulse applies.

Wow, I completely read that card wrong. Good catch.

And if they decide to go out and spend all of their tokens before you can OP them, you can just choose a different crit effect. Makes me wish we had some turbolasers with good critical effects on them.

Is this correct:

After rolling dice and using defense tokens, I have one hit a one blue crit left. The defending hull zone has 3 shields.

My Options are:

  • Cause 2 damage to the shields and then use the crit effect to remove a command token = total of 2 shields removed
  • Cause 2 damage to the shields but if there are no command tokens then I can cause another damage to the shields on that hull zone = total of 3 shields removed

Yup.

Though, really, your options are:

A) Trigger the critical effect of the card, which can: i) strip off 1 shield, or ii) disintegrate a command token, depending on the target condition (you don't get to choose) and in any case before attack damage is dealt; or

B) Do not trigger that critical effect (e.g. to trigger a different effect instead) and simply do 2 damage.

Nah, I like the turbolasers not doing the criticals, fluff-wise. It's the ion/missiles that really get in and rough stuff up.
