Tractor Beam, the Kanan Counter?

By Dagonet, in X-Wing

Probably. It is my guess that the Tractor Beam token will increase the difficulty of the maneuvers: green to white, white to red.

This is highly unlikely as that is functionally the same as a Stress token.

Can't preform reds with either tokens

preform a white > keep/gain stress > no actions

preform a green > lose a stress/don't gain a stress > get an action.

Stress: can't execute red, but white and green are available.

Tractor beam would even preclude the white maneuvers on the dial, while even the greens would not lose a stress because they turn into white. You lose all greens.

I think it would be cool if they give it the ability to "Steer" munitions. they could do this by giving munitions an extra dice? I know one of the tie fighter pilots used to do this in the books but i cant remember the name right now!!! or an ability to ovoid objects or turn tighter.. or as was mentioned make the enemy's turns harder or make them have less evade dice!! as in one ship tractor beams them and the other shoots them, Or better yet big base ships can do both!! might be a bit much though for that!!

My prediction is something like this:

1. Ships with a tractor token must select a speed 1 maneuver. (Or some similar restriction)

2. Ships with a tractor token cannot perform boost or barrel actions. (Not even freebies)

I got a feeling tractor beam is gonna be really underwhelming.

Always in motion is the future.

But really at 1pt it's not going to shake the world, just shift it a little.

Had the same thoughts. First inclination was to think it would affect very little, because its 1 point and Ion Cannon is 3. However, I do think it's important to note that it doesn't deal any damage. The only other weapon we have (or will have soon) that does not deal damage is the Tracer Missile, also coming out with this wave, which also is one point. But, Tracer Missiles can have a profound effect on the damage output and action economy of your list, despite not doing any damage on its own. Therefore, I think it stands to reason that it will offer a highly relevant effect to replace its lack of damage. Perhaps not Tier 1 or highly powerful, but effective enough to require to to change your plans should you receive one, just like an Ion Token.

By that logic the tractor beam will be an agility decrease that every single ship can exploit in the following turn vs Outmaneuver or Wedge that has the target's agility reduced against only 1 enemy ship on the same turn.

I can certainly see that as a possibility. The increasing difficulty also seems likely, or reducing your maneuver's speed. But, what I am betting is you can force the target to perform a boost or barrel roll.

Considering that you can no longer boost or barrel roll off the map...

Yes! That was a big clue IMO. We'll obviously know soon enough, but I think the forced boost/roll is likely. Force someone to change direction so they can't shoot at you, or line them up to fly over an asteroid. With the rule change, they can't force you off the table, which is good IMO as I'd bet it helped keep the cost down. You could certainly aim them toward the edge, though, so they have to waste a turn not dying.

Difficultly increase would be one of if not the most powerful ability in the game. If something is stressed and ion'd which isn't terribly uncommon then not only do they do a 1 forward but the opponent would then choose your dial for doing a red maneuver while stressed.

No, because you don't set a dial.

This. All the wording has to do is "when you reveal a maneuver", etc

Not even! I just checked to verify, but there's no rule against executing red maneuvers while stressed. It's only when revealing one while stressed that hands your dial to the opponent.

Hera, you can perform red maneuvers while stressed.

I'm getting more convinced with every preview.

Oh, Chopper of course: actions while stressed.

So,

Target Lock after red maneuver.

Actions while stressed.

Red maneuvers while stressed.

Remove stress after white maneuver.

Change <FOCUS> to <EVADE> while stressed.

Change <FOCUS> to <KABOOM> while stressed.

And that is just the Ghost and the T-70 expansion, and what we know of them.

Calling it now, Tractor Beam DOES NOT physically move ships around. It's too much of a wording nightmare, not to mention fudge-y with regards to how ships would be able to move on the map.

50/50 on AGI drop or difficulty increase?

AGI drop has the thematic brilliance of crapping all over Fat Hans as per ANH, but difficulty increase is probably more mechanically interesting.

Good call! Too bad in ran out of likes when TIE Fighter Miniatures staring Defender of the Empire Maarek Stele exploded all over.
