I Need Some Stress Relief

By General Mayhem, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I am going up against a list that has possibly 2 K-wings with TLT and Tactician. The following is my list:

Poe Dameron

R2-D2

Wired

Autothrusters

Keyan Farlander

Mangler Cannon

Engine upgrade

Blue Squadron Pilot

Flechette Cannon

This build ends up at 99 points. Thinking of dropping EU as I dont have room for Push the Limit on Keyan and maybe add Predator? The BSP has a flechette as I would like to dish out a little stress myself. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm not sure that Engine Upgrade on Keyan is the best option for your list. Let's think about Keyan's ability.

When attacking, you may remove 1 stress token to change all Focus results into Hit results.

You'll certainly be facing stress from the Tacticians in your opponent's list. If you get stressed early, or god forbid double-stressed on a B-Wing, you're going to be missing out on your actions before the Combat Phase anyway. So, Engine Upgrade may not be terribly useful. If you intend to arc dodge with Keyan, by all means give it a shot, but Keyan's real power comes off with something like...

Keyan Farlander

Stay On Target (2)

Advanced Sensors (3)

Before a maneuver, perform a Barrel Roll or Target Lock thanks to Advanced Sensors. Depending on where your opponents' ships are located, adjust your maneuver accordingly to get out of arc or maintain a better shot on whatever ship you want to destroy. Receive the stress from Stay on Target, then use the stress in the combat phase for Keyan's ability.

Now, let's look at your Mangler. Certainly a useful cannon, especially against something as chunky as a K-Wing. But do you see it truly pushing critical hits through often enough to be worth the 4 points in your squad? Let's look at your squad goals...

1) Dealing with stress.

2) Dishing out some stress of your own.

Dropping the Mangler Cannon and Engine Upgrade on Keyan gives you 8 points to work with. Stay On Target is 2 points, Advanced Sensors is 3. With the 3 remaining points, you can take the B-Wing/E2 modification and throw a Tactician on Keyan or your Blue Squadron Pilot. Tactician can also dole at stress at Range 2, and Keyan's Barrel Roll + Stay On Target combo is fantastic for taking advantage of that range.

Now then, that Flechette on your Blue Squadron. Keyan will be shooting first, so let's assume he maintains a Range 2 shot and deals a stress to one of those K-Wings. Well, now your Flechette Cannon is worthless since it can't add stress to an already-stressed ship. Since you were at 99 points before any modifications to the list, why don't we drop the Flechette on your Blue Squadron and add another B-Wing/E2 modification as well as another Tactician to the Blue Squadron. This gives you two beefy, powerful ships that can reposition well and drop stress on a target reliably.

Final suggested adjustments:

Keyan Farlander

- Stay On Target

- Advanced Sensors

- B-Wing/E2

- Tactician

Blue Squadron Pilot

- B-Wing/E2

- Tactician

This puts your list at an even 100 points. Poe seems fine the way he is, for the record. If he's stressed enough, he may not be able to get a Focus to take advantage of his pilot ability, so Wired is a good choice. But if you think you can keep him stress-free, maybe consider another EPT.

If you want a rebel build that can counter stress, build a list that cares not for stress..

Farlander

Adren rush (for that need to K turn moment)

HLC

FCS

title

Kyle Katarn

Tycho

Juke

PTL (title)

Refit
Auto Thrusters

Gold Y

TLT R3A2

and BTLA4 if you're good with y's

I would not try and tailor too much to counter his tacticians because your gonna end up with worse ships IMO, although its a cool opportunity to use wired.

Give keyan the usual precog hunter setup as Ardus Kaine suggested although I'd lose the tactician. I could see boost being desirable here to arc dodge better initially. Idk if its needed but once your behind them its done. The blue I'd leave at FCS.

I would not be trying to dish out stress on K wings since they really don't care other than slamming which means they aren't shooting.

If you're worried about stress, use things like FCS and Predator, along with ships that can find their arcs without using their boost or barrel roll. Autothrusters are also a good, passive helper. Howlrunner swarms are also pretty good at hitting K-Wings and Stresshogs, and it's hard to stress them enough to be relevant, since Howlrunner's re-roll ability will still work.

Just rely on passive abilities and good piloting. Don't go all in on 3x action dependent aces. Don't overthink it, and don't try to get too cute, imo.
