Great Merciful Mynocs, Everything's New Again

By That One Guy, in X-Wing

Yeah, so it's been ages since I've graced this forum, and even longer still since I've actually played the game. Now, what with the new movie coming out and all, I was thinking of getting back into things if I could. At the very least, trying to get a few games in at my FLGS. But good god, everything's all shiny and new, and I feel like i've really forgotten all the cool bits about squads and combos. This could get very interesting.

Also, can anyone tell me if there's a way to change my settings so I can get the old color scheme back? I don't like this black and white. I didn't see any kind of color scheme options in my settings though.

When was the last wave you played? Depending on how long ago it was and what you enjoy running, you could be looking at a pretty big buy-in.

Welcome back, though! Hope you enjoy pew-pewing the plastic ships out of the felt void of space.

Well as you can see by my post count, when it came to forum contribution i was no slouch. My last wave was 4, where I took 3rd at Imdaar Alpha, and at the next tournament we held there I did a full sweep. But our local scene died out and eventually I just stopped playing. I think it was around the time that the Armada game came out.

Ohhhhh yay, that feels so much better on my eyes. Black and white is a great color scheme for storm troopers, not so much for a thing located about 10 inches from my eyeballs.

Oh hey, welcome back! :)

Yeah, when I published that fact, it resulted in my most-liked thread in the history of the forum.

This is a very interesting time for the game. Paul Heaver's still world champ, but this time won with a very beatable list. Which means that, for the first time in quite some time, there really isn't a metagame.

Poe Dameron, from the new movie, is powerful, but so is Soontir Fel (with Push the Limit, Autothrusters, and Stealth Device, he's practically unkillable), and Miranda Doni (a pilot with the ability to sacrifice damage to regenerate shields, or vice versa)

TIE Advanceds are an option now, which hasn't been the case since Wave 1, with a title that gives them a Systems slot with a 4 point discount (!), and a 5 point system (-4 = 1 point overall) that lets them just add a Crit result if they have a TL unspent on their target.

The next wave, and the Gozanti, are bringing some very interesting items, revitalizing the TIE Swarm possibly.

A 1 ship Rebel fleet may be coming, which is okay, as large-based ships now contribute 1/2 their points once reduced to/past 1/2 health.

Knowing your fleet better than your opponent knows theirs is, for the first in a very long time, more powerful than net-listing. Pick and Practice :D

That… that sounds like a beautiful thing. It's like the game finally got to where I always was mentally when I still played. People always went on about meta this and that, and I just kept beating the tar out of all the list types. It just came down to having ships I knew and liked to fly, and figuring out what the lynchpin of the opposing list was. Then blasting it apart of flying in a way that disallowed it to work. Ignoring all the people saying that the Defender sucked was a plus.

Also, I was aware of the new TIE thing. I looked into the Raider when it came out, I almost got back into the game then but had no one to play with.

Do people still use that one crap freighter from the Rebels? I always loved killing those...

The meta got quite terrible once eveyone started running the phantom and then when Fat Turretwing took over. Despite how annoying aces are to deal with, the current meta is quite enjoyable.

For most of the past year it's just been a bunch of people smearing ice cream on their faces pretending that they played a game of skill in their turret vs. turret matchup. So you haven't really missed anything, welcome back.

Ahahahaha ice cream. I take it you're talking about the 1300/2400/decimator matches?

Ayep.

Worlds-winning list, for your consideration:

  • Poe Dameron + R2‑D2 + Veteran Instincts + Autothrusters
  • Gold Squadron Pilot + R3‑A2 + BTL‑A4 Y‑wing + Twin Laser Turret
  • Gold Squadron Pilot + Twin Laser Turret
  • Bandit Squadron Pilot

Yeah, I think I can say i'm glad I missed the bulk of those. The last match I remember playing was against some upstart who didn't know my style, thinking that his Millennium Falcon combo could take my WhisperCrit team. That was fun.

Were you around for the Phantom erreta? They decloak at the beginning of activation now.

Still powerful, you just can't arc-dodge with it anymore.

Didn't they always? Or did they move and then decloak?

Oh, ok, nevermind. I looked it up. I see the difference now. It used to be right before moving, now they have to do it not knowing where the enemy will end up. Hmm. Not sure how I feel about that.

Makes them significantly less broken, but not many people seem to like not broken phantoms.

Also our glorious leader Palpatine had graced us with his presence and is carrying his favorite two aces (usually the dark baron fel and lord Vader) to glorious destruction. He's put shuttles back in the game, if only to tote his throne around in. It's really given me a new appreciation for the lumbering white bastards.

I always loved those things. Buggery little stress factories that they are. Ion Cannons, Rebel Captive and APL. Created a lot of "i can feel the anger swelling in you now" moments.

Oh, and as for people not liking their Phantoms unbroken, it's because Phantoms came to the Imperials at a time where it seemed every other **** thing the Rebels had was broken, from a certain perspective at least. It was nice to be able to give 'em the ol' double deuce out yer cockpit window.

Sure, but they were pretty much responcible for the rise of "I shoot after everyone, ignore the first two points of damage every round, and dodge arcs" fat turrets.

I suppose. Oh well, it doesn't really matter that much. I only played them as a novelty most of the time. My favorite was always Interceptors and Defenders and TIEs.

There's a third faction now too (surprised it's taken this long to mention it). Might be worth checking out. ;)

Defenders and Bombers (and Punishers) are still in need of aid, the rest are fine.

They still haven't fixed the FFG logo in the classic theme.

Never will, correct theme is probably unsupported at this point. Doesn't matter much since the news page doesn't seem to have the article lag thing anymore.

Ignoring all the people saying that the Defender sucked was a plus.

There are a couple of extra things floating around to help them now, as well. The Twin Ion Engines MkII mod is cheap as hell and makes all their banks green. Very nice to allow you to cope with stress and actually throw yourself around the board a bit.

Plus, a few new cannons, which always makes for nice options for the defender. The Mangler Cannon doesn't give you extra dice, but changes one hit up to a critical. The Flechette Cannon is a very interesting option for a defender - it's cheap as [swearwords] and is essentially an ion cannon that delivers a stress token rather than an ion token. Given your ease of pulling off K-turns, that can be nasty.

A mix of Flechette and Ion cannons is especially nasty; one thing that hasn't changed is that most really tasty aces are action-dependent - a combination of a stress token and an ion token and their essentially a sitting duck for a turn.
