I know for a fact that there are some players in Rochester and Albany. You might try Comix Zone or Play The Game Read The Story, those are the two games stores I know of in Syracuse.
Well I know for a fact there are players at Play The Game Read The Story in Syracuse. 
Try Thursday nights at the main store. Although maybe not the next two Thursdays. 
The main store has an X-Wing event on the first Saturday of every month too. Usually a normal 100-point dogfight but sometimes they change it up.

We up in North Country/1000 Island Region play/Watertown play. I think I'm more upstate than you tho! 
But yeah PtGRtS in Syracuse is your best bet. Some locals here travel down for the tourneys from time to time.
Hi I am new to Xwing as well and am in upstate NY/Western NY
I have found this Facebook group helpful to find out about events. There is a monthly tournament in Rochester at Millenium Games but th only way to find it seems to be this Facebook group
