How does one go about podcasting?

By Not Bob, in X-Wing Off-Topic

I've been seeing a lot of posts about podcasts and, as it's new to me, was wondering:

What is a podcast?

What are the benefits of podcasting over Blogger/Facebook/Google+1 etc?

Do you need a superior intellect to create and run one?

How does one go about podcasting?

It's an internet radio talk show. You need software to chat with, microphone, recording software, and a hosting site for the file. iTunes helps gets your podcast out there.

Ive done three podcasts now. Table Flip, Adeptus Podcastus, and Ion Control. It's great fun but requires a commitment of time and energy and funding for the hosting. We host Ion Control on Podbean. Cost is reasonable. You should know what you are talking about whatever the subject matter may be.

"Cost" is a little off putting. Other media are free. But the rest sounds good.

Tablet has built in microphone but my voice sounds terrible so a better mike is a must.

I've noticed Podcast apps. Hope that covers some of the "software" side of things.

Cost is too host it online on a server site. It's free to make and listen to otherwise.

I've never tried to make one with a tablet. Not sure how well that would work. I do ours on computer. I listen to all the podcasts I listen to on my iPad mini using the Podcast app that comes native with iOS.

I've done experimental videos and voice recordings on the tablet. Sound is good, but distortion makes me hate my own voice (not a good start), and video is out of sync with sound.

So I'm definitely going to have to get a better microphone. Camera too if I want video.

Primarily I'm thinking of presenting it like a Rebel Propaganda broadcast. Using photos of games and narrating the action. Got a few ideas.

If you are just doing video then just use YouTube.

True

At least anyone else interested in starting a Podcast can read this and find out if it's for them.

Thanks for the help :)

Np. I've been there.
