New "Factions"?

By ajd1019, in X-Wing

There is no doubt that more Force Awakens mini's will come out 'eventually.' And yes, FFG says that Resistance can use Rebel stuff (and vice-versa) and the First Order can use Imperial stuff (and vice-versa).

But what's the consensus? Do we think that after more models are released the two "new factions" will become fleets on their own? Making the official fleet count go from 3 to 5? Or will Rebels and Resistance always be opposing Imperials and the First Order?

They would, I think, seriously tick-off a lot of players if they said, after people had collected and played a lot of the ships, that suddenly the squad they have been playing for the past year is no longer legal.

Nope won't happen. If anything they might make some cards or upgrades that make your chosen subfaction matter to encourage faction "purity" but they won't make the subfactions suddenly illegal for mixing.

nope

it was nope the minute the ep 7 core was spoiled, and it will remain nope forever more

If it were to happen, it would be far enough away not to worry about it right now.

Seriously, talking 4-5 years.

still nope

the Resistance and First Order are different from their original counterparts eye en oh, in name only

they are exactly the same thing from a narrative standpoint, just with new coats of paint

The game has three factions: Good guys, bad guys, and cool guys.

Which faction belongs to which group depends on who you ask.

Vaguely conceivable that it might happen years and years from now if they ever do a third edition of the rules, but otherwise, no.

Too soon to tell. Again many people said there would be no more than two factions (I was one of them) and to their credit the original concept for X-wing had only 2 factions and no more. The founding developers for X-wing had already moved on and passed the torch when the 3rd faction was made.

So what are these new subfaction then for if not flavor text? Well one thing for sure is that there will be no more than 3 playable factions when the T-70 and TIE F/O expansion packs are released this coming week. And likely next year even as Resistance and First Order start to get more ships for their faction. So yes the 3 primary factions are here to stay and as far as one can tell there is no need to change that.

I think the biggest question will be what to do if/when prequel ships are released. Would the "Law of Threes" still work where CIS and Republic are thrown into their equivalent primary faction and if that is the case which primary faction would that be. As mentioned before although CIS would be "Dark Side" therefor with Imperial primary faction but politically and agenda wise they would be closer to the Rebel primary faction.

OR

Will all the subfactions be split and there be an alliance wheel in which factions can take ships from a neighbor but not from both, so like a Galactic empire can take First Order ships while Rebel alliance can take a Galactic Republic ship. Again these questions are quite some time away before they need an answer but they are questions that will come up and who knows what the answer will be.

You mean Imps, Rebs, and Scum?

Or Dark, Light, and Other.

None of the old ships are out of print, they keep rereleasing them.

BLACK SUN FACTION FTW!

i keep store my Force Awakens ships separately from my other ships.

There's no cross-era funny stuff here.

I do the same but mostly for organization purpose. The symbols with the X-wings and TIE Fighters are so similar I don't want to get them mixed up.

Hey How did your academy pilot get a shield? <_<

Perhaps it's only because I'm only one week into the game, but I personally think that more than three factions would be a welcomed sight.

Along these same lines, how long will it be until we start to see "prequel trilogy" ships/ factions?

Looking at the game from a cash-cow perspective, maybe we'll see Awaken Trilogy (Blue Trilogy) ships/ factions for a few years as a way of marketing for the new movies, but I'm sure that there's money to be made by adding Naboo crafts, Droid fliers, etc. at SOME POINT. Right?

Naboo would be a good case for some 3-Faction ships. Maybe Trade Federation... but at some point it would be interesting to see a line of ships that could fly in all three and have storyline to prove it with differences in higher tier pilots for each of the factions.

Honestly if we went to prequel ships I think I could have a reason to play with what I already own and stop collecting. It isn't like I haven't pondered this question before with things the way they are. Wave 8 looks good as it will include the Integrated Astromech and that missile Targeting Lock thing. Right now the TIE Defender has the new engine upgrade; A-Wings have the refit; TIE Advance have their new title and Adv Target Lock; B-Wings have crew; Y-Wings will have a new turret and the BTL title; TIE Interceptors have the Autothrusters; Epic is nudged with ordnance. True nothing is technically an auto-include but let's be realistic. Looks to me like we almost have a 2.0 without calling it 2.0. So many things have been buffed nearly all of the standard ships (not all) have a fix and/or buff.

If this coming wave has really brought balance to the force X-Wing then going to prequel would be a good reason to not have to worry about new storage solutions.

:D

Just my 2 cents.

Food for thought! If someone gives me a penny for my thoughts and I give them my 2 cents who gets the change?

There's hardly any real other faction in the current era / canon that could be added as a Full Faction, or at least non I can think of.

Don't hold your breath. FFG CEO himself has said their focus is the civil war forward, not backwards.

Does anybody find it mildly amusing that FFG have wholeheartedly embraced new ships from a new period set 30+ years after the OT, but are unwilling to even entertain the thought of anything from the prequel trilogy?

I know there's some massive hate for the movies, but some of the ships could be interesting additions to the game. It's not like they can say the ships are too old. The Firespray and the YT-1300 date back to then and appeared in those movies.

Not really. Considering the dislike (something I have never personally understood, why people waste their time hating the prequels) for it they might just have realized it is not that profitable for them. Or they might be getting direction externally to move that way and ignore the prequels era. None of us can know with any certainty the reasons for their decision.

Yea, I don't understand the massive hate associated with those movies. I enjoyed them for the entertainment value that they were. I didn't try and dissect the plot like some have. But I'd love to see some of the ships. The Jedi fighter, the ARC-170, the Droid fighters. I think they'd be cool to play.

I don't merely hate the prequels, I loathe them. Releasing prequel ships would put me in a terrible position: do I buy a ship just for the cards and then smash it with a hammer, or just never get those cards?

X-Wing would cease to be fun.

P.S. I don't hate the prequels. I do think some of the dialogue was lame and some of the plot was very weak. The graphics was awesome but that alone didn't make a movie. I wish Anakin's conversion was done better.

It's like saying the new Star Trek wasn't Star Trek, but I still enjoyed the movies.
