Redline and Defenders

By Darth Chuck, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Lately I have been playing two lists with varying degrees of success. One is Redline with Oicuun and the other is Vader with a Pair of Delta Squad Defenders. I have found that Redline does a lot of the heavy lifting in the first list and I can't fly Vader to save my life in the second while the Defenders do a lot of the work. So I had an idea to combine the lists while ditching the parts that are under-performing. What are your thoughts on this?

Redline with Fire Control System, Extra Munitions, Cluster Missiles, and Cluster Missiles (yes, 4 Cluster Missiles)

I love Redline with Cluster Missiles, it's just such a great combo. And defenders are great fighters that can definitely hold their own. I see the only problem really being high PS aces that can outmaneuver the defenders preventing them from getting shots. I guess if flown correctly though you could make it so that one of these 3 can get shots on the ace problem and just try to focus him down first and mop up lower PS after. It's tough to bring down the punisher and I guess that is what you'd want to protect to get them shots off. If I had a second defender I'd try it out for fun.

I think it could be fun, but no way I'd take it to a tournament. Too easily countered and I don't think the deltas do well at PS1 in the current meta. I think Onyx defenders would be better here, but then you compromise Redline, so ultimately I don't think it can do well competitively. Switching the list archetype on its head might actually be better (that is, Vessery with a pair of generic punishers), but I'm just theorizing...

For 100 points:
• Darth Vader TIE Advanced

• “Redline” TIE Punisher
system.png Fire-Control System torpedo.png Extra Munitions missile.png Cluster Missiles
• Colonel Vessery TIE Defender

Very few upgrades since each one is pricey, but Darth Vader and Redline will always have something target locked.

You could drop Vader for 30 points of TIE fighters. TIE/fo can target lock to help Vessery out.

Push the limit, even with TIE mk2 is of pretty limited value on the Defender. Vessery would be much happier with HLC. At 42 points, you have room for a pair of cutlasses with FCS, clusters & extra munitions.

I only have one Punisher, so I would like to stick with Redline. I was also toying with this:

Redline with Fire Control System, Extra Munitions, Cluster Missiles, Cluster Missiles, and Seismic Charge

Colzet in the TIEx1 with Accuracy Corrector and Stealth Device

Alozen in the TIEx1 with Predator, Stealth Device, and Advanced Targeting Computer

Not bad, although personally I think hull upgrade is superior to stealth device. I would drop the seismic charge in exchange for flechette torpedoes on Redline. Adding some punch at R3 (and a tiny bit of control) will help you more than a bomb.

I am going to ditch the Bomb and add Plasma Torps for 100 points.

Very much agree with blade-mercurial here - Cluster Missiles make for some demoralizing (for your opponent) TLing shenanigans on Redline, to be sure, at least until he realizes you're still just rolling two red dice at range 3. I played a similar build and it was painfully obvious that I needed a little more reach, which torps do for you.

I like what youre doing here Chuck. Here is what i ran before:

TIE Defender: · Colonel Vessery (35)

Crack Shot (1)

Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)

TIE Punisher: · "Redline" (27)

Extra Munitions (2)

Ion Torpedoes (5)

Cluster Missiles (4)

Fire Control System (2)

TIE Advanced: · Lieutenant Colzet (23)

TIE/x1 (0)

Accuracy Corrector (0)

If i were to do it again, Id try to get lone wolf on vessery just in case

So, Redline and Defenders or Redline and Advanced? I am leaning toward the Advanced.

  • Redline with Fire Control System, Extra Munitions, Cluster Missiles, and Cluster Missiles (yes, 4 Cluster Missiles)
  • Delta Squadron Pilot x2

If you're having trouble with aces outmaneuvering you, you could always drop one set of cluster missiles and strap flechette cannons to the two Defenders.

Stressing a snubfighter might pair well with your ability to K-turn in behind someone, and it's not like they're expensive...

So, Redline and Defenders or Redline and Advanced? I am leaning toward the Advanced.

I like named advanced over delta defenders. Your thoughts on one of each? Whats funny is that I really like the pilots youre dropping (vady and oicunn).

I know it's me. Vader on paper looks great. I've seen Vader flown well. I just have some sort of mental block with him.
