Hello all!

I've taken the plunge and bought some ships for Armada. With all the excitement surrounding the new film I really couldn't help myself. I'm completely new to Armada(I also bought stuff for X Wing but haven't played that either) although I have been wargaming for a good few years now.

I opted for the starter set as well as an MC80, Imperial class Star Destroyer and a pack of fighter squadrons for each faction.

Is this a decent start?

What would you guys recommend next?

I'll be playing with a friend who is very new to gaming as a whole, so we will both be learning the game together.

That would let you build a list with a ISD and VSD w/fighters, vs a MC-80 with a CR-90 and Neb B escort also with fighters. You might have trouble getting to 400 with those, but it's a good place to start.

What would you guys recommend next?

I'd say the Assault Frigate and a Gladiator next. I'm guessing you're going to provide parts for both sides and that seems like the most balanced options to get next.

Vanor hit all the main bits up top for new ships. Sadly, if you want to get all the cool upgrades you will have to buy the Starter box ships individually as expansion (or you can photocopy-proxy for immediate access, but don't bring these to tourneys).

Honestly there are three answers to you question,

For fun the following,

If your buying for 2 people to play get 1 of each exp and the core, also buy 1 extra dice set.

If your buying for 1 person and have friends with stuff buy only what entrusts you and 1 extra dice set.

If your going to play competitively buy 4 of each small ships (4 of sqaud packs) 3 of each medium ship and 2 of each large plus 1 extra dice set.

You will need upgrades which come in these packs and something like tracker bean is something that can wreck an opponent but you only get 1 in each of the large ship packs. It is critcal to have upgrade cards and most people will sell them overpriced on eBay or other sites. It's cheaper to just buy extra ships at that point.

Again no matter what BUY EXTRA DICE and if your sharing maybe one extra movement stick. 2 core sets is not advised as the exps come with different upgrades then the core sets.

Definitely this, the dice that come in the core set are not enough, you will want a second set (perhaps 2 additional sets, due to large ships being able to throw out so many dice, but a third set is completely up to you).

As far as what other ships to get, if you want to take it slow and get a feel for the ships, starting with one of each expansion is good (as was mentioned by Vandor, Assault Frigate and Gladiator are good ones to get next).

I would by the expansions before another starter because you get access to all of the cards. If you just use proxies and are not worried about getting everything, a second core set is good to have because of the extra measuring and maneuver tools.

For an intro game, I would just put a star destroyer against the mc80 and add in roughly equal numbers of points worth of basic squadrons. Then start building lists at set point values. 400 is standard for tournament play. 300 will allow you do have one or two heavily upgraded ships. 180, is good for just playing with the starter set.

More dice!!! I have 9 of each color for me and another player and I'm not sure it's enough now that the ISD and MC80 are out.

I got 2 of everything and 3 of the squadron packs.

I do not regret it.

I feel comfortable building 2 - 600 point fleets.

Will be trying out 2 - 1000 point fleets soon.

(I play casual and supply for me plus opponent.)

it is not necessary to by four of reach small ship. The game is incredibly well balanced and does not require that kind of financial commitment imo. You will do just fine with the core set and one of each ship. I do recommend two fighter packs though

I have withheld from purchasing another medium or large ship outside of my firsts since I know that as soon as there are more options at those sizes I will not need multiples of what I have

Get a Glad and an Assault Frigate. Then you'll be fine.

Two fighter packs (for each side), especially in wave two, will serve you very well.

Recommendations from a casual player who provides all for his group-

1. Get Assault Frigate and Gladiator

2. Get expansion copies of core ships

3. MC30c and Raider (and I'm presently lacking here, as I have not added a Raider).

4. Figure out what you like and duplicate the things you need to play the way you want to.

5. Add Rogues & Villains as a fairly cheap add on to either point 1 or 2 above. If nothing else, this game is Star Wars, so you need the Millennium Falcon.
