Timing question

By Red Castle, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Okay, I have a situation that I'm not sure of the exact timing.

Let's say I have 2 ship attacking at PS4. My opponent have the initiative so he'll shoot first. He decide to shoot at my Shuttle with Palpatine and destroy it. If I didn't yet use Palpatine ability, can I still use it when my own PS4 ship attack?

Since the ship with the same PS can still attack even if destroyed, does it actually mean that the Combat phase is broken into PS window? Each ship with the same PS attack starting with those with initiative, then remove all casualties; or since the Shuttle is not the same PS, it is removed as soon as it it destroyed?

Really not sure on that one.

The answer to this seems so obvious that I think I might have misunderstood your question.

If a shuttle carrying Palpatine is destroyed before it gets a chance to use Palpatine's ability - the the ship is immediately removed from play - any upgrades that ship carries are also considered destroyed - whether you've used them or not.

The only time it would not be removed immediately is when the simultaneous attack rule is in effect - for that to happen it would need to be attacked by a ship of equal PS that has initiative.

That was the question and what I was not 100% sure: Can it still interact in the simultaneous attack if it just got destroyed (and is a PS lower) or is it immediately remove from play.

That's what I thought, but wanted to clarify just to be sure. I've been playing this game since wave 1 and I never had to deal with a situation like that. Thanks.

Ya, no different than any other upgrade card or ability, its effect stops when its detroyed. Though, Palp is a Sith Lord so if anyone could reach beyond the grave...

In your example, the ships that are firing are PS 4, and your opponent has initiative. If the shuttle that is carrying your Palpatine is Captain Yorr (the PS 4 shuttle pilot), then yes, Palpatine would stay around for a bit and could be used on any PS 4 attacks you still had coming. Otherwise, no.

The Simultaneous Fire rule (Rules Reference p. 17) is a specific exception to the normal timing of when a ship that has been dealt a number damage cards equal to or greater than its hull value is removed. It is not a general rule indicating that ships destroyed in combat aren't removed until the end of the current PS window.

If you've been playing since Wave 1 the answer to this question has been around since Wave 1. Back then the question was "If my opponent has initiative and is firing first at PS not8 and destroys Howlrunner can I still use her ability when my ships get their turn to fire?"
