A short lament with regard to EPTs

By Clutterbuck, in X-Wing

Yesterday, I had to drive for a while for work, and I came up with a wonderful idea. I was thinking about B-Wings, and it occurred to me that a couple of the new disposable EPTs would be wonderful in combination with Dagger Squadron Pilots. In particular, I thought it would be neat to run 4 Daggers with Lightning Reflexes, to give some positional game to your list to go alongside your firepower, My general thought process was, the one step up generic A-Wings have EPTs, so the one step up generic B-Wings must also have EPTs.

I experienced great sorrow when I learned that this was not the case.

This is the end of my lament. Short of expressing my wish that Dagger Squadron Pilots had EPTs, I am not sure it has any real meaning. Thank you for reading.

Yeah, they're pretty frugal with EPT slots on generics. A-Wings and Red Squadron Veterans are currently the only Rebel generics with an EPT.

This is mirrored on both the Imperial side (only the top-tier generic TIE, TIE/fo and Interceptor pilots have one, but they also have two levels of non-EPT generics) as well as Scum (Black Sun Aces are their only EPT generic small ships, though 2/3 large ships will have one after Wave 8 drops).

Yes, it is somewhat disheartening that all the 'level 2' generics don't get an elite slot :(

On the plus side, its easy to house rule if you have a small group of friends you regularly play with and who are cool with doing stuff like that...

You forgot Tansarii Point Veterans for scum. But its the Scyk. So not surprising that you forgot ;)

Oh good God no! The B-wings do not need anymore help. That crew slot addition is already pretty effective. A 22 point ship with 5 shields, 3 hull, 3 attack, a cannon, and a system slot (with the possibility of a crew) does not need an EPT. I agree with the current set up of the B-wing. To gain an EPT, you will need to invest serious points into the pilot first.

To be fair, the ship I was lamenting about costs 24 points. Nevertheless, your point with regard to the relative power level of the EPT stands.

I would love it if they brought in a PS4-6 pilot for these ships and allowed an EPT on them. It would change the game, and this isn't the only ship I would want it on. These don't have to be squadron leaders and limited, but more like the TIE Fighter which doesn't have an EPT on the two lowest tiers (Academy and Obsidian) but get them with the Black Squadron. Would be nice to see this on B-Wings, X-Wings, Y-Wings, (and no a single R2-D6 is not the same), etc. even at the cost these would have to jump up to... 21 or 22 point Y-Wing, 25-26 point B-Wing or 24-25 Point X-Wing. Considering the Black Squadron is only 2 points higher than a rookie, and all of the second tier of the X, Y and B's are already at that price point, I would hope for the lower point range as the second one puts them in with the aces, but there are days I would pay that cost and not have a named pilot.

I've actually been thinking about the "lack" of EPTs on mid level ships (some, not all) and have had an about face on my opinion. I once thought that almost ALL mid-level ships needed an EPT to be competitive and the ones without are not present in the meta because of this. I know think this is a limited view of the mechanics of this game. The EPT is often the most direct and cost effective way of adding an element to a list. It is not the only way. While more complex, the idea of ships that play well off of each other almost as is should not be destroyed by a saturation of EPTs. The game is in fantastic health, now more than ever. Creative uses for those non-EPT mid range PS pilots can be very rewarding!

To be fair, you can also use R2-D6 to give Red Squadron Pilots, Grey Squadron Pilots, and Blackmoon Squadron Pilots an EPT.

Though it's unique and I've very rarely found a reason to do so. Best use I ever got out of something like that was a Blackmoon to give him Lone Wolf (and a Sensor Jammer) to troll TLTs.

EDIT: I've also considered giving a Grey Deadeye with it to have a cheap ordnance carrier who can pick his targets. With that said, that Grey is looking at shooting two torpedoes then being mostly useless.

I certainly wish there was an "interface" mod that gave named pilots without an ept, an ept.

For two more that grey can have an Autoblaster turret and be a nuisance at range one at least. Still somewhat cheap.
