LUKE & R2*D2... Do We Still Love Them?

By Joe Boss Red Seven, in X-Wing

When I got my new TFA core set, I had just finished reading Weapon of a Jedi which had a neat scene with Wedge and Luke together. I had to take them for a test spin with my new BB-8. Wedge got our new soccer ball, but it wouldn't feel right running Luke without his faithful droid companion.

Luke Skywalker (Lone Wolf, R2-D2, Shield Upgrade) [38]

Wedge Antilles (Push the Limit, BB-8, Engine Upgrade) [38]

Gold Squadron Pilot (Ion Cannon Turret, R5 Astromech) [24]

The point is, Luke and Wedge are so awesome that they were the only pilots able to pull me away from Scum since Scum released this year.

EDIT: Oh, and I'm 2-0 with this list, so yes, I still love Luke and R2-D2.

I would put the R2 astromech rather than the the R5 on the Ywing.

Actually, in the second game I dropped it altogether for a 1-point initiative bid. But it was my first time playing Rebels in a while and I've always flown Y-wings with R2 Astromech. I wanted to try something new that night. R5 did actually come into play because of Vader and his crit-title, but it was more for fun than anything else.

I never used Luke that much. Wedge more so, Biggs more so.

That would be cool If Luke became a T-70 pilot in TFA, then We get him as a T-70 pilot in Xwing! :D

for some reason I doubt Wedge is in TFA.

Bearded Luke might have different abilities altogether

Just as Wrinkled Bald Wedge would most likely be a squad leader with buffs and not Bruce Willis Solo-pwnage xD

What about Luke or Wedge with VI, R7-T1 and IA? Plausible? Busted?

He is decent with BB-8 and either Predator or Outmaneuver though.

Good timing since I actually just ran luke for a few games yesterday and my opponents we're calling him busted! Luke with LW, r2d2, EU is a monster on par with poe at range 3 and more durable inside due to LW vs AT. He's also cheaper and doesn't care about actions near as much as poe FWIW. Not that it matters since I brought both but yea, lukes still the **** in my book.

Just to clarify this, he is not more durable than Poe. Poe has one more HP, on R3 and out of arc Poe gets a guaranteed evade on a blank as opposed to a reroll. Add his ability to that and he is certainly more durable. Also Lone Wolf is very conditional, and without it the difference gets only bigger.

Offensively there is also no comparison. You can't take PTL on Luke because you want Lone Wolf. And that means you either Boost or Focus, meaning you either have no movement or no modification barring Lone Wolf.

Poe is more action dependent, that is true, but if he gets those, he is plain better. In offense and defense. And let's not forget that Rebels have ways to give him a Focus.

And he costs exactly 1 point more... So i would take him any day of the week over Luke. Or with him together. Poe was not in the finals of Worlds TWICE while nobody even played Luke in the whole Tournament for no reason. There is a big difference in power level between those two.

I can understand that people still enjoy flying him of course, but i eished he was a bit more competitive!

Luke with R2D2, LW/pred, EU.. you can't do wrong with it.

well, I can :D - but it's still very good.

problem is: whenever Luke wants to have some fun on the board, R2D2 is not to be found;

that ***** droid is having his fling with Corran or Poe now, and poor Luke can't do nothing about it.

effing gigolo-droid..!

;-)

Well I did say more durable 'inside' meaning within range 2 with LW active, or i.e. anywhere that AT is not since he can still effect blank results while poe otherwise wouldn't. At least in my experience this has been pretty huge. Otoh I feel r5p9 is the superior regen droid, for poe at least. Fair enough on the rest.

Isn't Luke a Sith Lord now? Hurr hurr...

Yeah, it's Jacen and Jaina all over again.

Leia has to kill Luke.

[i really hope not.] :(

Love 'em BOTH... and I do not like the idea of killing either of them to use the free'ish point of hull.

Don't worry Joe, they fixed R2 up good as new in the movie. That's the good thing about being a Droid!

They put Darth Vader's midichlorians into R2-D2's oil. So now he's a Sith Lord too!

As far as competitively, at the moment, Poe is much more efficient. I would love to use Luke instead but Poe's ability is close enough to Luke's but used on offence as well, plus, as was said above... one more shield, boost, Autothrusters...

I usually run Luke with R2-F2 and save R2-D2 for something with more shields like Poe or Corran.

Im sorry but I have to say this, whenever I see your profile picture, then read your posts, I can't help but read it in an Alec Guiness voice. ^_^

I like luke+R2-D2, I just enjoy wedge more. that Pilot skill 11 with VI just works so nice...

Fun, thematic, but never on the bright side of competitive play.

calling something a "fun" list usually precludes it from being truly competitive.

You can stomach playing lists that aren't fun?

How?

I usually run Luke with R2-F2 and save R2-D2 for something with more shields like Poe or Corran.

That....is a remarkably nice idea. That gives you a ridiculous ability to avoid fire - I don't know why I never even considered that (other than generic "Luke+R2-D2" fixation).

I know that's a defensive-only increase, not defensive and offensive like Poe Dameron, but that comes within a hair as good as Poe at range 3 - even with autothrusters.

It's using your action, but not your elite talent - with Lone wolf that's going to be nasty. Thanks for the inspiration!

Poe is just straight up better then Luke.

T-65 really needed a t-70 title for 3 points that gave boost, 1 shield, tech slot, and allowed the t65 to use a t70 dial with tallon rolls etc.

Then Luke wedge and several other t-65 would all see competitve play again. Heck even with that upgrade Poe is still arguably better then Luke.

Integrated astromech is not going to do the t-65 any help in being competitive.
