LUKE & R2*D2... Do We Still Love Them?

By Joe Boss Red Seven, in X-Wing

I have not seen much chat at all about these heroes in a good while. How do you guys feel about it?

:)

I still love 'em, and I think they are just great in the old game and work well enough in the modern game too.

They're a classic! I never field Luke without R2-D2 on principle. Once we get ourselves an Integrated Astromech, it'll be the most thematic pairing in the game.

It's Luke and R2, of course we love them! You've just inspired me to put them together in my next Rebel list!

Luke (with R2!), Poe & Jake are a fun list to play :)

Fun, thematic, but never on the bright side of competitive play.

calling something a "fun" list usually precludes it from being truly competitive.

 :D ^_^

I dunno about not competitive. Luke is a long way from being bad - especially if paired up with Lone Wolf, he's a hell of a ship to face in the late game.

Poe Dameron's ability when joined up with R5-P9 is probably better, but then he's more expensive. More importantly, you can afford to field both of them....

Nonsense. If I don't think a list is fun, I don't play it, tournament or not.

Vader, Soontir, and a Palpmobile is incredibly fun. You've got two wildly positional ships, and a Shuttle that's ponderous, but no less positional in its own right... and you've mitigated the tendency for treacherous greens to spoil your fun.

I wouldn't call it uncompetitive, either. ;)

Indeed, my main complaint these days is that it made the finals at worlds, so now it's a netlist. :P

This list goes under Uniform Code of Military Justice [Title 10, Subtitle A, Chapter 47X, Section 920, Article 120]

xD

Nah, 4 Bombers with Proximity Mines and a Doomshuttle is both. Its not the top level and an older list now, but it is still dangerous. Brobots hate it, for example.

single brobot takes an ungodly 5 proxi-mines to go down

Well, Fel will hate it, sure enough.

LW Luke and his tin can side-kick have left a deep scar on me from my early x-wing games!

The amount of times I smashed the rest of my friends' rebel lists, only to be curbstomped by the little git. I now have lukeophobia. You can cope with the symptoms, but it never really leaves you...

What are some good X-Wing builds in general, assuming it's Vassal play and I can freely use IA? I'm talking about something that's effective for its points, because losing isn't fun.

With Integrated astromech, Luke, Biggs and Wedge are going to be very fun and just might surprise a few people.

Edit: like this maybe...

Luke, VI, IA, R2-D2, Plasma Torp

Wedge, Opportunist, IA, BB-8, Plasma Torp

Biggs, IA, R2

Luke, especially with Artoo is still good now. He might not be a tier 1 operator but he is competitive.

With IA I think we will see a lot more of him again and that can only be a good thing.

Not THE powerhouse, but worked pretty nicely for me.
The "reveal green,

perform a barrel roll action,

trigger PTL,

boost\focus,

perform a green,

take stress away,

perform TL\focus"

allowed Wedge to feel himself a little E-wing

I really like running luke with R2, shield Upgrade, and lone wolf. With his ability, R2, and extra shield, and one reroll for defense, He is pretty tanky. I only had Luke left, my opponent still had a Kirahxz and three Z-95s left, and He quit after I killed the Kirahxz and a Z (about 7 turns of Luke not dying). Luke clutch!

He might get a bit better with Integrated astromech, but it's still very doubtful if it's enough to put him to a somewhat competitive level. He still has the problem that the T-70 has not. And that would be a lack of mobility. You just can not use his High pilot skill efficiently with no movement options.

And as IA will effectively bar out Engine Upgrade if you want to run it, i don't see a lot changing in that regard

The X-wing lacked survivability and maneuvrability before. Now you can make it acceptably survivable, but it still can't move. Both has by the way been fixed by the T-70 for just a few points more, and with Autothrusters its just the better overall choice anyway.

If we just could put Luke or Wedge into one of those!

That would be cool If Luke became a T-70 pilot in TFA, then We get him as a T-70 pilot in Xwing! :D

for some reason I doubt Wedge is in TFA.

What about Luke or Wedge with VI, R7-T1 and IA? Plausible? Busted?

I'm with Banjo... I too have a healthy fear of the young Skywalker and his snappy sidekick. Too games of chasing him around the map making his shield tokens do the shoot me up shimmy, only to have him K-turn behind a rock and one-shot his way to victory. Now that I have some EPTs to put on him I imagine it will only get worse!

Also, doesn't the X-Wing have an open Title slot? Maye we could see a slick T-65 only Title that is something akin to the squint Title in regard to IA and EU.

Good timing since I actually just ran luke for a few games yesterday and my opponents we're calling him busted! Luke with LW, r2d2, EU is a monster on par with poe at range 3 and more durable inside due to LW vs AT. He's also cheaper and doesn't care about actions near as much as poe FWIW. Not that it matters since I brought both but yea, lukes still the **** in my book.
