Newb questions...

By Chubbywan, in Star Wars: Armada

Just played my first game with my brother. I have a few questions and more to come I'm sure.

1. Let's say he hits me and I counter...can he use defense tokens on a counter or only on a main attack.

2. Defense tokens. They are readied, let's say in round 2 ship phase i use scatter to avoid some damage and now it's flipped and is exhausted...once exhausted can I use it again in the same round and it's destroyed for the remainder of the game OR wait for round 3 and reset it to readied?

3. Crits. Let's say I attack and roll 2 hits and a crit. He takes 3 damage to the shields or 2 to shields and 1 to hull. Also he draws a card which brings me to my next question.

4. What is difference between face up and face down cards?

1) A "counter" attack is an attack in all ways. He gets the benefits of "swarm," and possibly howl-runner, and you get to use defence tokens, and/or any other defensive abilities. The only way in chich a counter-attack is difrent from a regular one is that it cannot trigger a counter-attack.

2) if you spend an exausted defence token, it's gone for good. Make sure you really need it.

3) If you roll 2 hits and a crit, he takes 3 damage, and you can use 1 critical effect. The basic critical effect is "the first damage card is drawn face-up." There are others. Note that the basic critical effect dosn't mention shields. At all. Not even a little bit.

4) Face down damage cards are 1 point of damage. When a ship has taken damage equal or greater than it's Hull Points, it is destroyed. Face up damage cards are a point of damage, AND a nasty effect.

If any of this is unclear, feel free to ask for additional information. The Rules Questions forum will get you better results.

1. Yes

2. destroyed for remainder if it was already red.

3. If he has 3 shields left it is just 3 shields of damage....the easiest way to think of crits and damage is once you have a total amount of damage (after any evades) ignore the dice. (always a max of 1 crit) Only if the crit makes it through to hull does it get a face up card...(then there are special upgrade crits from cards which are a whole other story)

4. Face up cards have effects that are additional to the 1 damage that they represent.

I spent hours on here last night. So much to learn. I may hit up a local game. This is my first type of game like this.

Where are you located?

Welcome!

There are also a few useful sites out there that myself and other writers have. Hopefully you can find the information useful!

I'm in Utah

Awesome! Hope you like it, and +1 for willingness to ask questions. There's a bunch of non-intuitive stuff in Armada (I see that crit question all the time). Keep playing! It'll all come together eventually.
