Coolest name?

By Glasgow Scotland, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Let's leave aside the toughness or danger of monsters, and just look at the names. What monster or GOO name is coolest?

Shakespeare said in Hamlet, "the names the thing/ With which to prick the conscience of the king."

My playing partner and I discussed this today.

My personal choice for coolest name was "God of the Bloody Tongue."

My playing partner's coolest name was "The Bloated Woman."

Any other nominees?

Nyarlathotep. I've always been a big fan of Egyptian stuff, and the opening "Nyarl" sounds vicious.

Byakhee. LOVE that word. With the right inhuman pitch, it could very well be their screech that echoes from the sky (like Katydids).

I second both of these. Just the other day at lunch I told a friend at school of my recent purchase of my last AH expansion, and started talking about AH, and praising how cool Nyarlathotep is in every way gran_risa.gif

But to contribute:

Chthonian (the way I pronounce it, don't know how "right" I am) sounds really menacing, like a mountain really. Something my listeners don't want to repeat after me.

And Shub-Niggurath just rolls from my tongue in a way that I really like. I've actually toyed with that name, improvising songs including words "Shub-Niggurath" and "The black goat of the woods with the thousand young". Just awesome happy.gif

And just to miss the topic: Anythin with "Iä iä! [name here] fthaghn!" just sounds so cool that I sometimes try to find places in conversations to say it outloud lengua.gif Just today I congratulated my friends during game of Arkham Horror by saying that with their name. (I know it means [name] sleeps / dreams, but we all had fun, nevertheless).

Coolest monster name has to be, "the Flying Polyp." I mean, ewww....somebody take a scalpel to that thing. As goofy as it sounds, it is one of the nastier monsters in the base game: -2 horror check with 4 sanity lost on a failed check and -3 to combat rolls; not to mention physical resistance, nightmarish and overwhelming.

... in Yellow.", perhaps?

It's "the play's the thing", btw, not 'the name'. And it's usually 'catch the conscience', not 'prick' it.... I don't know if you were misquoting on purpose, but at least I now get to show off that I know Hamlet. gran_risa.gif

I quite like 'Dimensional Shambler'. From the Mythos I also like the 'High Priest Not To Be Described' although it's a shame it's abbreviated to just 'High Priest' for the game.

i must admit to being a cthhulu fan, but i love so many, worm ridden one, sounds sooo disgusting, and what about skin weed..eeeww.

the bloody tongue.......slavering gug...........to name a few
