I seem to remember at least one upgrade that says "Spend 1 defense token to..." but does that mean to exhaust it or discard it?

Id give more details but I'm at work and this question is just bugging me.

I think spend would be to use it, therefore if you spend a green defense token it's then flipped to red. If you spend a red defense token it is discarded

That was my impression. As well. If you were supposed to discard it, it would state that, as it does in Nym's card.

You "spend" a defense token by either exhausting it, or discarding it if it is already exhausted. The mechanic is identical to the way you spend a defense token as part of the "spend defense tokens" step.

This is covered under defense tokens in the RRG.

Not quite. If it says "Spend" it means "exhaust it if it is green or discard it if it is red", if it says "Discard" it is straight gone either way, and if it says "Exhaust" it is flipped to red if it is green and left red if it is already red.
