Ally & Villain Pack buyers guide

By jacenat, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Since I noticed new players asking which expansions they should buy for skirmish or the campaign and responses sometimes being all over the place, I decided to take matters into my own hands.

As of today, I finished writing short articles about all Wave 1 and Wave 3 Ally and Villain packs. I even graded them on a scale of 1-5 for the campaign and skirmish seperately. You can have a look at all of them here:

So, spread the word and if you have some input on what to change or improve, shoot away either here or mail me at [email protected].

It looks pretty accurate to me, though I think you rated IG-88 too low. IG-88 is so far only in a single mission (or maybe two) as far as I know, and both are side missions. This means its pretty rare to see him ever get played unless you include his agenda deck and win the agenda mission. Also, I believe his firepower upgrade is going to be handy when the HK droids are released in the newest expansion and who knows what other droids we'll see down the line.

Fly solo is the second and it's a story mission (though he will often do nothing at all in it).

On the op: Based on rebel meta 3p0 seems all but compulsory, that's got to be enough for the pack to be 4 restraining bolts.

I was thinking about this and might revise after Hoth and Wave 4 is out, depending on what that does for the meta. I am hesitant to recommend figures with 3 speed when Hoth seems to be about blue squares everywhere. Thanks for the suggestion though.

The problem is that he is only viable with technological superiority, and even then he just doesn't hold up in the late campaign. So you only get a few missions worth out of him without throwing away threat. Boba Fett and the RGC are both much more viable alternatives. And Kayn Somos is about equal (if you are not very good at positioning and hindering the rebels from placing Blast or Cleave).

I'll think the 2 is okay if IG.

Armored Onslaught has some cards that can also be used for on droids. I'd atleast give IG-88's villian pack a 3 in campaign, mostly because otherwise your chances to use him are extremely limited. Boba Fett is definitely better, but I think IG-88 still has his uses. Sometimes you just wanna mix things up with your bounty hunter options or keep things more thematic. Bringing Boba Fett over and over would get boring imo, even though I think he's the best villian atm.

EDIT: Also, you are wrong about Firepower upgrade. It isn't a one use agenda card. You just need to spend 1 to buy it and 1 influence each mission you decide to use it. Nowhere on the card does it say to discard/recycle it.

1) Armored Onslaught isn't out yet. I am writing from a current perspective and reserve the right to modify the articles with future releases (especially for skirmish)

2) IG-88 got that low rating also partly because he plays such a little role in the core box campaign. A part of the buyers do buy the packs for the minuatures first to not have to rely on the tokens. Weiss for instance only got a 1 for the campaign because he is easily substitutable with the AT-ST (unless both are on the map, which is very unlikely).

And that's fine! But that doesn't increase the value of the pack. The other packs have a more direct and immediate benefit, while IG-88's benefit is delayed. I remain that he, together with Weiss, is definitely the weakest pack to get for the campaign in Wave 1.

Good call! I will edit it as soon as I get home. I do make mistakes quite frequently, so don't hesitate to point them out!

/edit: I corrected the passage.
