Opportunist anyone?

By nitrobenz, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I haven't seen much use of Opportunist in my area , but when I got a copy I couldn't help dreaming up a few ways to make it happen. My favorites so far are Leebo with HLC and Mauler Mithel (can you say 5 die TIE!?)

I've had decent success with the Leebo Opportunist build:

Leebo w/

- Opportunist

- HLC

- Dash Rendar

- Outrider

(52pts)

Wes Jansen

- Expert Handling

(31pts)

Prototype Pilot

- Chardaan Refit

- Autothrusters

(17pts)

Obviously the main synergy here is Wes strips a token (preferably from Range 3) or alternatively the ProtoPilot blocks and costs the target his action then Leebo gets HLC+Opportunist for 5 red dice. With some good set-up I can get TL+Focus every other turn and there's nothing I can think of that can cancel five hits :D

The rest of the strategy is to set up the asteroids as tight as I can and fly Leebo through them since HLC denies his target a range bonus, Dash (crew) denies them the obstructed bonus (being able to still shoot when I misjudge and overlap obstacles is a nice bonus here), and the asteroids discourage getting inside the donut hole. So Leebo's 5 dice attack is against a target with no modifiers and no bonuses.

Expert Handling is on Wes because a few people see that combo and go for him first so getting out of arc and throwing target locks keeps him alive, and if they do go for Leebo first I find that EH makes Wes a stronger closer. Considering dropping Dash crew and Autothrusters to add Engine Upgrade to Wes to further enhance manuevering...

The next one is based around what I call "Kathosaurus" which is a stress causing Kath, accompanied by a TIE with Opportunist to take advantage of the actionless target:

Kath Scarlet Alt Kath (using Proxy upgrades) with TIE/ln's instead

- Predator - Calculation

- Flechette Torpedoes - Mangler Cannon

- Gunner - Tactitian

- Slave I - Engine Upgrade

(48pts) (49pts)

Rexler Brath Mauler Mithel

- Opportunist - Opportunist

- Proton Rocket - Engine Upgrade

- Heavy Laser Cannon (25pts)

- TIE mk. II Obsidian Squad x2

(52pts) (13pts each)

So the strategy here is to use Kathosaurus to put multiple stress on a target ship by whatever means necessary so they lose the ability to take actions next turn, which leaves them particularly vulnerable to my Opportunist TIE. Then Engine boost Mauler to R1 for his bonus plus Opportunist for also five dice! For Rexler it's 5 dice at R2-3 and a one-shot 6 dice at R1 w/Prockets(!) and he clears stress with his newfound abundance of greens courtesy of mk.II engines. As a bonus with Rexler you have his pilot ability to turn the heat to 'incinerate' if you don't need your focus token to get in the hits

I've only flown this once using the no proxy cards Kath and the three TIEs. I had too much trouble getting the Flechette-Gunner combo to work for me, but in spite of that Mauler still managed to get range one behind a Talonbane who foolishly spent his focus on shooting Kath and laid some good damage on him.

Overall I'm enjoying the response from people when I manage to get five hits on a roll when they only have two defense dice and stress management is no more difficult than it is with PTL. It's just a difference of damage output vs. survivability.

I've been using opportunist and k4 security droid on Bossk and have Palob flying near by. At range 1 Bossk gets 5 dice but can cancel a crit to add two hits. That's 6 hits at range 1 every round. Should have seen the look on opponent's face when Bossk killed Poe with 1 shot.

I thought the "before dealing damage" clause in Bossk's power meant that you could only convert a crit to 2 hits after all modifications and dodge dice were done.

Can you do it immediately after rolling?

I've tried running Opportunist on Keyan Farlander to also get his stress token ability, but was having issues because most of my targets weren't vulnerable to Opportunist. However, it might work with Wes (who I don't have).

That's correct. "Before dealing damage" IIRC. Which means after everything else is done and right before taking cards from the stack.

The 6 hits were a total. 4 hits and a crit equals 6 hits. As the only ships who could avoid 4 hits and a crit is a cloaked phantom with evade token.q

That sounds like a fun setup, just need to get myself the Most Wanted pack so I can run some stuff next to Palob. That seems like a pretty obvious use for opportunist.

I should have thought of that! Keyan could really work well with that setup: do some other action, get a stress and extra die, spend the stress, happy Keyan :)

It works well, but the key is finding some way to keep the tokens from stopping you triggering it.

A very simple but nasty combination is:

  • Palob Godahli - Opportunist, Blaster Turret, Recon Specialist, Moldy Crow, Engine Upgrade

You can be confident of a good opportunist target because if there isn't one, Palob can create one - then feed the new focus token straight into his blaster turret (which then flings out 4 dice and probably has spare focus from the stack he's created on the first couple of turns).

Engine upgrade is there because using opportunist means stress, which (unless you're Keyan or Tycho) means a green maneuver next turn. Given the HWK's pretty awful dial, being able to throw in a boost every so often is good for avoiding arcs of fire from generics, and for getting your nose around in a hurry since you have no K-turn.

Two other options - especially if paired with Wes Janson - are Wedge (needs VI on Wes) as getting an extra die and taking away one of your opponents is nigh un-dodge-able and Tycho - Tycho has a 'spare' elite talent slot with the A-wing Test Pilot title and that helps make up for his fighter's shoddy primary weapon. Plus, that one time you trigger proton rockets at a target with no tokens, I assure you you'll know about it - a 6-die focused attack has a pretty good chance of one-shotting any tokenless snubfighter in the game

Unfortunately Tycho can be a pretty poor choice for opportunist. While his ability means he cares not a bit about stress, unfortunately the opportunist card does care. If Tycho keeps even one stress token from his movement or a previous round, he can no longer activate opportunist...

I like running Carnor Jax with Opportunist. Get him into Range 1 to deny those focus and evade tokens and then let fly with a 5 dice attack!!!

This is a bad idea against ships with lower pilot skill. They move first and take their focus action. You move in, and now they CANNOT use their focus token, so you have guaranteed that opportunist cannot trigger. At PS8, that means Opportunist on jax will not work most of the time. Terrible combo, frankly...

You'd be surprised how often it does work. Once Jax is in the furball he becomes a royal pain in the backside and often denies tokens to at least one potential target. His great manueverability means he can often get said target in arc and once that happens (esp at Range 1) the attack has a very good chance of hitting.

And of course it's easy to shed the stress given the Int's brilliant dial. I've used it repeatedly as I've found it works often enough to warrant it.
