New guy here. I played a little when the game 1st came out, but never really bought into it. I changed that recently, got some sets and a couple of expacs. I started looking at tournaments and it's all 1v1. Is there any interest in the community for doing 2v2? Any thoughts?
Two v Two competitive format?
What you do in the privacy of your own home is, of course, all up to you and noone will comment on the specific shape of that long, strong, might I even dare to say quivering with power, Corvette and what two consenting adults can imagine.
*ahem
Most of it is 1v1, though team play does occur regularly. Only casual though, not competitive.
And even then, more people are shifting to Epic for that.
But have a look around, there are lots of homebrew modes hanging around here in older threads. There's DagobahDave's racing squad, there's a co-op campaign and the furball is always popular if you have a group of people.
We've done some 2v2 tournaments in the Atlanta Area and it proved popular and successful. 75 points per player, 150 per team, same faction. No shared uniques, and no shared ship types. For instance, if one player on a team plays TIE Fighters, his partner cannot. That's just what we did, though. That last part would be fine either way.
There is an official tournament format for 2v2 in epic (each player has 200 points).
I have never seen it used in an actual tournament, which is a shame as its a very fun format.
I think its harder organize and tends to exclude newer players (since they don't know as many people in the local scene.)
I am afraid that while the game is quite big and growing, it does not quite have the level of establishment like 40k does to make team tournaments a more regularly encountered thing. Tournament scene is very much tied to FFGs official tournament seasons (stores, regionals, nationals, worlds) and formats. Should FFG diversify the kits they release the uncommon formats like epic, team epic, or escalation would gain some popularity. But for now even the seasonal summer and winter kits are advised to be run with the standart format.
I think team competitive games would be great. Would create an even more fun and casual atmosphere than 1 on 1 I'd think.
The problem that keeps coming up when my club proposes this (ok, it's mostly me) is that people don't have enough time to do an epic tournament in a day and that if moved out to league play it becomes difficult to keep up with the logistics of getting 4 people together to play a given league game.
To me the issue with 2v2 is there isn't a clear way to do it.
You could have oversized squadrons with some special construction rules that are run by a two person co-op. Ultimately this is what many think of when they see 2x2 as you have two people come together to build a mega squad composed of two pieces that work together and then they discuss things as they play.
To me, a more interesting way to play 2x2 is to have two completely independent partners on a side. No strategizing when it comes to list building and no private sharing of plans during game play. When a game is over the pair could be split up and matched with someone else for the next game. Now this can potentially run into the same uniques appearing in allied players squadrons but I believe it is most interesting because it really changes how things are played.
In that first method you're just looking at 1v1 play except with a bigger squadron and perhaps two heads to bounce ideas around. With the second you are looking at a bunch of different things as you try to figure out how to work toward a common goal even if you have different ideas on how to accomplish that.
We have been doing games with 75 pointe per player 2v2 and they work out really well. Each team is essentially one side, so can not have 2 Vaders, or 2 Lukes etc, or other uniques.
This really gives a cool way to play the game, with a wingman like feeling as you play with your teammate.
We, havent done it for competitive tournaments yet.
While I agree with the 75 points a player, I don't agree with they have to be the same faction. Just rebels and empire shouldn't be in the same team. Scum should be able to team up with whoever they want. I don't know, I think I need to play the game more before I can really start trying to create my own format.
