Medium Sized ships you'd like to see?

By Cuthawolf, in Star Wars: Armada

Okay, sad admission here: I am having a devil of a time thinking of medium sized ships that can fit into Armada's current size area. It looks like the Gladiator is probably the upper edge of small based at 500 meters, with the AF2 near the bottom edge of medium at 700 meters. An Assault Frigate 1 would be 600 meters, so that's probably the very bottom of the medium? With the upper not being probably more than a thousand meters.

That leaves...not much? The Dreadnaught class Heavy Cruiser obviously, but I'm having a devil of a time finding other mediums that aren't too small or too large. Or Star Destroyers. Maybe Imperials have a broader range of medium sized ships, 'cause it seems like Rebels don't have much.

I'm really really really hoping the rebels get the dreadnought

Strange, I kind of want the Dreadnought for the Empire to give us some long-range broadside firepower to match the Rebellion!

The Assault Frigate MK-I is another obvious medium ship that could be depicted. I like to imagine it as some kind of super Nebulon-B to give the Rebels some forward-shooter to pair up with the Nebulon-B so it doesn't feel so lonely.

Vindicators are another medium candidate I think. I'd love to see an MC40a from TIE Fighter even though like most of the MC series it will be yet another broadsider.

Venators are mediums aren't they? They and Acclamators if we wanted to jam in clone-war era relics. Though if they show I kind of would like to see Recusant in Rebel hands too.

I dunno. I think I'm up for any ship in the Rebels or the Empire, so long as it isn't anything from EaW: Forces of Corruption or Galaxies.

Vindicators I really wana see. Easily a medium ship, perhaps even with immobilized refit. Vindy's would be a slightly smaller, maybe more agile/fast victory with emphasis on blue dice. They might be a way to squeeze in a medium range broadsided in imperial play...though being very SD-like it'd be hard to not just make it a front-arc-beasty.

The new Force Awakens SD is a toss-up. Most likely large but could be medium.

Dreadnoughts obviously. Aclimators are one of the few prequel ships that I don't despise...this could fit a medium range broadside role I feel.

AFMKIs, and nebulon-b2 variants seem a good choice too.

Bottom line: Gimi vindicators or give me death!

Nebulon-B2s would be small. I think they're actually shorter than the Nebulon-Bs.

Finalizer is going to be a large at least. Last I looked it had more engines than the Imperial, which might suggest its bigger? I doubt it's going to make an appearance for the while, for no reason less than it will overlap too much with the just released Imperial, and we don't want to make that craft obsolete like the B-Wing pushed the X-Wing into obsolescence for that game.

I'm not sure about Dreadnoughts and Carracks and Lancers because they're kind of boring. Other designs would be more interesting to cover.

There isn't much, really.

According to the old materials, Interdictors and Vindicators are 600m, but even at that scale they look better on a Small base (they're dimensioned almost exactly as a Gladiator, only without the tip cut off). The Interdictor depicted in Rebels is clearly larger, though, so I'm fairly confident FFG will release it as a Medium.

The Assault Frigate Mk.I, Dreadnaught and Neutron Star-class bulk cruiser are all also 600m, but all look at home on a Medium base.

Nebulon-B2, Strike Cruiser, etc are all definitely Small.

Of course, if you're willing to go into Clone Wars-era ships, you can scrape a few more Mediums such as the Acclamator and Munificent. At just over 1000m, the Recusant is borderline Large, but at Shipyards we've decided to give it a Medium base on account of its skinny structure and balance considerations.

Given what you are experiencing looking for medium sized ships, tells me we are going to definitely see more small ships released than medium ones. I'm ok with that. Give me a bunch of beautiful, purpose built ships to round out a 400 pt fleet.

Sadly, I think everything I can think of in that 500m and beyond point has been covered already.

Star Wars: Rebellion the PC game is one of my favorite sources for ships, many of which I don't think have canonical established sizes? Wookiepedia has a few though. Let me name drop some:

Dauntless-Class Heavy Cruiser

Liberator Cruiser

CC-9600

?

The Bulwark out-masses the ISD! If there's a counterpart to the Super Star Destroyer, should those ever be made, I think the Bulwark would be more interesting of a unit than the Viscout. But those are all larger ships...
