When I got onto this crazy ride, that's excatly what me and my friend did but over the last 12 months we unintentially gravitated to one faction, now I play almost exclusively as imperial and he as Rebels, it wasn't intended we just felt a strange pull to always play one side.
As for the original question, yeah go for Scum or fly all YTs and set yourself up as some kind of mercantile shipping business
Play the Mirror Universe. If you have any alt art pilot cards, draw goatees on the pilots' faces (on the outside of a sleeve, so you don't ruin the card), or expand existing goatees (Baron Fel) into full beards.
This way you can use any faction and still be distinct from your family.

Draw the goatee on the ship, and make tiny ones out of felt for your models.
