Slaves of the Empire!

By Franigo, in Game Masters

Well, not really, just a little. Let me explain: since my last topic asking for ideas went so well, I thought I could as the hive mind for inspiration again. Warning, long-ish post containing minor spoilers for Escape from Mos Shuuta and Long Arm of the Hutt below!

My group has finished Escape from Mos Shuuta and Long Arm of the Hutt in five very entertaining and fun sessions (and has grown to four players along the way). Now they are entering unchartered territory. One of my players wrote a nice backstory about how slavers captured his two siblings and left him for dead. I put some hooks into the game early on, what with Trex being a slaver and all, and they found out that the brother and sister were taken to Zygerria. Since the character in question discovered that he is force-sensitive, I figured his siblings might be, too, which opens a lot of fun possibilities.

Last session they wrapped up some loose ends (getting rid of the Wookie pelts in an appropriate way and so on). They then investigated the Zygerrians. I gave them an old organisation that was founded to buy back slaves from Zygerria long before the Jedi Council decided to stop the slave trade there once and for all. It is called the Trinity Alliance (founded and financed by the Republic, the Jedi Order and the Galactic Banking Clan - I actually modelled it after real-life orders that were founded to free slaves in the middle-ages). Using that link, they now know the following:

  • The younger sister was bought for an outrageous amount of money by a Zygerrian noble and slaver; she is now a podracer in the noble's stable. It is highly unusual for humans to be able to compete at this level.
  • The older brother was bought for a modest sum by a mysterious Moff that does not govern a sector, sits on Coruscant and is one of the few with travel rights into the Deep Core.

The characters just landed on Zygerria to free the sister. Buying her is out of the question since the price is too high. Of course, simply taking her and running should be difficult as well; as a promising podracer, she is a valuable asset and protected accordingly. I figured something along these lines would be fun:

  • She is kept in line with a shock collar and under constant supervision. The only times she is away from heavily guarded places is when she is racing/training. Are there more ways to protect her from abduction by well-meaning relatives?
  • Having to enter the races to win the sister in a bet? Very Phantom Menace-y, I know ... ;)
  • The Moff wants the sister, too, but the noble does not sell - agents are there to grab her. Maybe an Inquisitor? It would be nice to add them as recurring adversaries for the two force-sensitives of the group.
  • I thought about introducing Ashur Sungazer from Lessons of the Past as a fellow slave and confidante of the sister, acting as a go-between with the group (he enjoys more freedom than she does) and later as help for the force senstitives to find lightsabers.
  • Apropos lightsabers - maybe the Zygerrians have some on display? War trophies and all that. Maybe broken, maybe missing something that needs to be procured in another adventure.
  • One character is a survivor of Alderaan. Slaves from Alderaan on sale? I thought about an attack on Imperial installations with the message "Remember Alderaan" displayed.
  • Are rebels on Zygerria? For what purpose? Trying to free some of their compatriots? They might make good allies, but how to meet them?
  • The brother ... brought to the Deep Core for brainwashing and training as an Inquisitor? Or something else, even more sinister?

I need some complications, hurdles, plot hooks, cool scenes, interesting places, evil villains and all the rest that makes a memorable adventure.

tl;dr: What's fun to do when freeing slaves on Zygerria?

I would like to know more about your Trinity Alliance. With the Republic gone and the Jedi all but dead, who runs that group now?

You have some really promising scene ideas already listed.

In particular, a rescue attempt during a podrace sounds very exciting. I can imagine them quickly putting together their own pod and entering the race themselves. They plot the course of the race and decide the best place to grab the sister is "here." They have to nab her and make their get away to the ship which is parked out "here." They have to do all of this without her knowing there will be a rescue attempt. The complication? She really digs podracing; she loves the thrill of it and she's quite good. She's treated like a superstar, you know, as far as being a slave goes. And she wants to win this race. It'll be extra tough rescuing her when she kind of doesn't want to be rescued.

Also...

The moff wants her for whatever his reasons are. He's there at the race to try to (honestly) purchase her, but of course, the owner isn't selling such a commodity, or is demanding much more than the moff is willing to pay. Negotiations are ongoing in the owner's box, when word comes to them that the girl has escaped/been nabbed. The owner might accuse the moff, but regardless, the moff immediately has his people pursue the rescuers. The owner may not be willing to sell, but the girl is now free to be "rescued" by the moff.

Sure. I have decided that the Jedi Order was fed up with the Slave Empire enough to actually do something a century ago. There was a brief and very one-sided war, Zygerria was put under Republic law and that was it. The Trinity Alliance all but ended then, having outlived its purpose. But a sole office building on Junction survived somehow, now being full of old and mostly derelict computers and a lot of trash collected by its sole keeper, a quirky, ancient being of undeterminable species that just never went away. The character managed to get some of the old tech running again, gaining access to Zygerrian slave records (basically, the Trinity Alliance needed to be able to track slave sales, their account was never deleted and the Zygerrians simply used their old infrastructure when they returned to the business).

Uh, that is a nice one. I thought they might try to use the race for an extraction. Her wanting to win is very good. Thanks!

I want to keep the Moff in the background for now, maybe building him up as a recurring villain. He has something to do with force-sensitives, and my group has two. But an agent of the Moff could be there - maybe even more than one. An Imperial acting officially and a team to do a clandestine extraction in case the negotiations fail. This is good, more complications and more different players spice things up!

By the way, are people interested in actual plays on these boards? I do fairly extensive write-ups of the sessions for my RPG-wiki, as we only play once a month and I find that it helps players remember stuff. So I have them ready anyway.

Speaking only for myself, I love reading write-ups of what happens during games. Most of them are very entertaining by themselves, and they sometimes give me great ideas that I can use in my own games.

So — yes, please!

Cool. I'll post the logs bit by bit here. I still need to go over the newer entries.

I like the idea that the Empire is sending someone, an Inquisitor given what Star Wars Rebels has told us about their secondary mission of collecting Force-sensitive children, to collect the sister. Maybe it could be the brother, brainwashed Winter Soldier-style, but that's a reveal for later in the campaign: for now the Inquisitor should be more like the new male Inquisitor on Rebels, a silent brute type.

So the Inquisitor is there to get the sister. Does the Zygerrian sell? I'd say no--a one time credits transfer is nothing compared to the money from racing her as long as she survives. And based on what we saw of interactions between the Sith and Zygerria in The Clone Wars, I'd say Palpatine is using them to supply slave labor, so the Empire can't go in blasters a-blastin'. So then you've got the PCs working to free the sister, the Empire playing nice and trying to bargain on the surface and sending the Inquisitor to take her under cover of darkness (which the PCs can be blamed for, and maybe framed for by the Empire?), and the Zygerrian in the middle playing them all.

As for lightsabers, there should absolutely be some trophies from the Old Republic (as in the Old Old Republic) on display. If there's a fight between the Force-sensitive PCs and the Inquisitor, have them call one to their hand and let it work, but only for the battle. Afterwards, it refuses to ignite: the lightsaber's lyber crystal was attuned to its original owner, and turns to dust (which could be sold, if the PCs need cash) when handled. The PC is going to have to find a kyber crystal attuned to them--it's time to go on a Jedi Vision Quest!

I would love for the players to run like hell if they encounter the Inquisitor. It is always difficult to convey in RPGs, most of the time we are conditioned to fight, but I think I might just have the right group.

Yes, that sounds good. The Zygerrian noble does not sell; having a winning podracer in the stable is great for reputation and prestige. She is also filthy rich already, so mere money is not enough. I will work out what the Inquisition does and just put their plans in motion. If the PCs interfere or are faster, great, if not, they will need to chase them.

Nice. I'll have some on display and see if they take the hook!
