One-shot campaign mission

By Lifey, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Hello friends,

I love this game (particularly campaign). I'm currently running 3 simultaneous campaigns and I can't get enough.

Sometimes I want to scratch the itch of playing a campaign mission and I'm around people who know how to play, but are not in a campaign together.

Do you have any suggestions for missions that can be played as a one-shot? Ideally it would require minimal set-up (low-mid XP and credit amounts), and would feature a mission which is well-balanced given a particular threat level / amount of starting gear.

For example, one such suggestion might look like:

"Sorry About the Mess" side mission. Threat level 3. Heroes start with 4XP and 300 credits each to spend on tier 1 & tier 2 items. Imperial Player starts with 4XP.

Sure, I could pick an arbitrary spot in the campaign (e.g. Side Mission 3) and say "lets play as if we are here in the campaign with this side mission", but I'm curious if any of you have found a specific mission that works really well as a one-shot!

The first mission in the Twin Shadows campaign or Aftermath.

I don't have the Twin Shadows campaign yet, so fair enough there.

However, I don't think Aftermath really works very well, for a couple of reasons.

1. I think the mission is heavily favored for the Rebels. This is great for a new campaign, as it slowly ramps new players up to understanding a full mission. However, with players who know how to play, The IP will get stomped.

2. Almost all players have already played the campaign starter missions, perhaps multiple times (once per campaign), however, other missions are less likely to have been played before.

I would like to know sine good suggestions too, but for the purpose of demoing and tutorial for new players to see if they are interested.

I don't know if I'd agree with the fact that it's favored towards the Rebels. The Imperial player at our house commonly wins this against veteran Imperial Assault players (if there is such a thing by now).

Being in your shoes, I might suggest merely having a rotational campaign. Just fill in the Rebel slots with the players of the day. Keep bouncing yourself between Imperial and Rebel. That way, you still have an organically grown campaign and don't have to wonder about what class cards and equipment the Rebels/Imperials should or should not have.

Aftermath, just don't play the Imperials like your life depended on it. Aftermath is good because it has the two "stages" (before and after opening the door), it has crates, it has a door to interact with, and while the round counter goes quick, it's a small map that the Rebels can get to where they need to be. Also that gun emplacement is fun no matter what side of the table you're on or how many times you've played.

When I tutorial the game for people, I always close the door on them. I say it's some tactical advantage of spawning the troops in the last room, but really it's to make it easier for the Rebels. If the Rebels win that match near the end of Round 6, you will have hooked them as players.

Alright, I guess my experience with Aftermath might be atypical. I'm almost finished with two campaigns as the imperial player and am doing very well, but I'm still yet to have won Aftermath. (perhaps it has to do with playing Tech. Superiority in 2/3 of my plays, it has a near-useless starting ability).

Thanks for the input. I'll give Aftermath a try as a one-shot.

How does Technological Superiority have a useless starting ability? Sure you damage your model, but it gives that extra surge potential to push even more damage through. My group has decided to stop using that Imp deck until the Return to Hoth expansion because every time that deck is used, it snowballs with the eventual defeat of the heroes.

I always demo with Diala's mission.

She has an amazing mission that includes a confrontation with vader. Lots of fun surprised and a neat way to take him down for the mission.

Getting a little off-topic here, but regarding Technological Superiority, let me qualify my statement:

Tech. Superiority's starting ability is quite poor for Aftermath. It becomes much more useful when you have more worthwhile surge outlets.

I had a similar need and I posted a discussion not so much time ago.

I'd do the first mission in Twin Shadows.

I closed the doors on a new campaign I started yesterday and the Rebels ended up winning on the first activation on Round 6. If they didn't get a favorable roll, they wouldn't have won. Went over very well. :)

How do you start the Diala's mission?

"Temptation" - Page 7 in the Campaign guide.

Great mission for sure. Surprise villain and a super fluffy reward!

There are many missions beautiful to play, the problem is how set up in XP, credits and influence a one shot mission. Twin shadows give an idea if you want to play the first mission of the expansion as new campaign.
