conditions and monsters

By lucerim, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi all!

I need your help with the rule about conditions and monsters. I know that every monster automatically fails any skill test. Does it means that a monster with poisoned condition will suffer 1 heart for every round until his death without any possibility to recover (except for card or OL powers)?

And what about weakened condition? Is it possible for a monster to perform rest action (even if useful only for this pourpose)?

What do you think?

Thanks in advance

As far as poisoned, yes that is the case. A monster can never dicard poison (or disease, or curse) via the test. It will always fail.

As far as weakened, my inclination is the same. Monsters can't rest because they don't have stamina. However, FFG may rule differently if you ask them since for example, a reanimate can perform an action to discard stun or burn when normally it can only do move and attack actions. It seems fair that monsters could therefore rest as a "discard weakened" action.

That would be quite a change actually. When playing the overlord I was always nervous for the iron flail of the prophet weakening my monsters or lieutenants. And because weaken is removed by a rest action instead of a normal action I would interpret that explicitly as monsters being stuck with weaken until they die only after intense suffering. As for burn, I would find it hard to believe that a being as lowly as a goblin archer could stay cool enough while on fire to put himself out;)

EDIT: I recalled reading somewhere on this forum that if a rule doesn't seem to be logical, you should try to seek the logic behind the rule. In this case I would say that monsters are driven by a desire to kill, and won't rest until the heroes have died, thus they can not perform a rest action. However, monster do possess the intelligence to practice first aid since they can remove the bleed condition.
