Common mistakes in Epic

By PhantomFO, in X-Wing

I disagree on 1 with you, they are not slow but most of the time you want to fly them slow so that you recharge max energy.

Don't forget also that although small and large ships start within range 1, a huge ship for section will be at range 2-3 after placement!

I ve done mistake 2 a few times myself too!

They are slower. Sure they have to stick to halfway between range 2 and 3 if placed flushed against the edge but that extra bit of initial reach soon goes away after the first 2 turns. Huge ships don't add their base to their straight maneuvers so each straight is 1 less than its smaller counterpart. Furthermore the huge ship takes 3 banks to make a 90 degree turn where as all other ships banks only take 2. So turning those ships is even far less than regular starfighters. Also don't forget the fishtail. At the event there was a raider that hit its own Decimator (RAdm Chipry of all) and accidentally crushed it. Last tournament we had a CR-90 end up fishtailing the base off the edge but instead of destroying the huge ship we house ruled it to treating it like hitting an obstacle and the rear section took a face up damage card.

Oh, were you at Around The Table last Thursday? lol. God, what a wince, but in Chirpy's favor, if you're going to take Palpatine with you, you might as well commit suicide...

While we are on this subject, how do most people tend to deploy the CR-90? sideways leaves your rear exposed, but allows you better use of your hardpoints, and your primary weapon's 3-5 range band as well.

Dead on protects the rear better of course, but it takes longer to do useful things with your hardpoints.

Thoughts?

why would anyone bring a 0 agility ship to epic? Decimator, for instance?

When we ran a similar epic tourney with the CR-90, I had it set up in the middle of the field, facing directly in. Protected the rear, and allowed it to bank to get its shots lined up if needed.

As for 0-agility ships: they still have a ton of shields and hull to burn through. It takes a lot of attacks to kill it. Considering that a CR90 can fire five focused, target-locked dice with a friendly Esage nearby, that Decimator may still survive longer than Soontir would in certain situations.

As others have mentioned, the Huge ships are slow, so starting sideways can be a risk. If your opponent hangs back, your fighters could easily find themselves stranded and under fire far from the CR90. However, this situation really isn't very likely. If your CR90 is sideways, and as far infield as you can legally deploy it, its range 3-5 weapons will very nearly reach the opposing setup area. However (yes, there's always a bigger fish), obstacle placement will usually preclude sideways deployment so far out.

What I like to do is pick a nice lane through the obstacles and go straight as slow as I can. This is because I almost always have Engineering Team, and you never have enough energy. Sure I'll bank from time to time, but if straight works, I'll do it.
