I dunno, I sort of am feeling the Phantom is a thematic miss. It's just got too much firepower for what amounts to a shuttle.
???
I guess I meant 'shuttle' in the Star Trek sense - IE., tiny little transport pod thingy.
But this is as good a point as any - look how massive a shuttle needs to be, with how many pointy guns on it, to get an attack of '3'? This guy absolutely *DWARFS* the Phantom!

Those are for the weird complexity of docking aship because cards need to have all the rules.
The stats of the attack shuttle (and lack of generic pilot) reflect its extensive customization.

Are we really going to go to the "Atk = number of guns" argument? That is in no way remotely accurate.
Let's also say that the 3 Atk is there to justify it's cost. Because I really don't think they wanted to upgrade the Ghost for anything less than the 18-19 pts Zeb is going to be.

That's stupid.

But it should be. And more often than not, it is.
The fact that this is one of those rare instances that isn't is what prompted the topic.
Edited by DarthEnderXAttack dice, like the evade dice, are an abstraction. In the case of attack dice, they're an abstraction of lethality and accuracy. They're not the amount of guns on a ship, or the amount of shots that are fired.
As for the Phantom, that seems to be equipped with two forward facing laser cannons, and a turret, 3 makes sense to me.
Balance>Fluff every time
Statement is irrelevant as always in a game that uses points.
Anything can be balanced if you charge the right amount of points for it.
Represent the fluff, then figure out what you need to charge for it.
yeah no, that's a load of bull
in a game as intuitive and stream-lined as X-wing, there really isn't much room to waste with the minute bull that people put far too much stock in
being fun to play and worth playing is priority #1, considering this is a game first and foremost. If it were just some flash in the pan crap, we wouldn't have even gotten to the Ghost at all
in short, let the game designers do their amazing job regardless of what tiny liberties they have to take with fluff they translated from an entirely different medium

[looks at TIE/FO, TIE V1, and Punishing One]
I have no idea where you are getting that idea from. 3 Atk has always been considered the "ideal" attack. I mean, the Attack Shuttle is an X-wing with one less hull. I have no idea where the power creep argument is coming from, other than paranoid delusions.
This isn't Attack Wing. 90% of the ships are either going to have 2 or 3 Atk. I doubt there will be another 1 Atk ship, based on designer comments. And 4 Atk is definitely going to be rare. So, there is not going to be a lot of variation. And from what I've observed, 2 Atk is still pretty potent.
2 atk has been considerably improved with
Acc correctors (advance, death rain)
Crackshot (tie fighters)
Juke (Awings, tie fos, strum & Juno with correctors, Tie/v1)
Juke FOs are particularly potent and can tango with aggressors in my experience
Also ordnance (kwing, bomber, punished, jump master) if the new mod is any good
Edited by ficklegreendicewell, I don't see it, and it really annoys me;
first: it's a shuttle, not a fighter. still has the same 3red as an xwing, interceptor, a decimator or a lambda with the effing array of guns.
second: all packed up into a tiny model the size of an awing (I assume), and yet still carrying a turret and a crew..
grmpf.
it's a distant relative of tie phantom, or should I name it V38 assault fighter? :I
crew and a bigarse gun battery fueled by tears of Ps8 pilots

it was always so.
either 3 or 2 with Howlie
I do agree that thematically, it should probably be 2 atk.
They obviously chose to make it 3 atk for game state reasons. It seems to me to be a boost-less interceptor, which is a fairly unique space. At 2 atk it would be pretty close to either the z-95 or awing.
I feel like they didn't want it to conflict with the A wing in the design space at a similar price point. So they made it hit a little harder and cost a little more.

I think they also wanted to make sure that the Specter combo was one people would be drawn towards, so they had to a) make sure the attack shuttle was fairly high in points and b) make sure it was good value for the cost. That was pretty much going to guarantee it was a 3 attack ship.
Well considering A-wings are red shirt scrubs and the Phantom is a main character of the show. Of course the phantom will be the only one that will get a good shot. Lets face it, one thing you will not see in Rebels is the Ghost dying unless that is towards the end of the final season and again that would be like last episode crack in the plot armor.

Tbf, we have Jedi tomfoolery to thank for the ghost getting shots in
But Vader didn't stand that **** for long

It's funny watching other people in the thread go crazy over technical details in a space fantasy show anyway. I would say it's less "fluffy" to obsess over gun calibers/reactors/barrels than to just say "it's a plot ship"
Something to consider: all the shuttle pilots are unique, they clearly want them to be played, and are likely giving them awesome abilities like Ezra. But! If they made it a two attack ship, what would then happen? Who would bother with fighting something as stupidly defensive as ezra, if it didn't have the offense to hurt? That was the problem with the tie adv. Yeah it was crazy survivable, but didn't do enough damage to matter. Or for that matter when was the last time someone flew a unique z?
It likely won't have a dial anything like the awing. So it won't trip that design space. Since you really can't spam them they need to make it a ship that by itself can contribute to the game. Hence attack 3.

ah, but the "plot ship" is already reflected in its stats by being more durable than the gonzati ![]()

This is the first good argument for its 3 attack in this thread. Number of guns on the model doesn't matter, "plot Armor" doesn't matter. Playability matters.
I think it's attack 3 because You're paying 60 points for a combo ship. Consider the following:
You're probably paying 20+ points for an extra attack and the rear arc(something a gunner can do for 5). I don't know how docked ships are going to perform in reality but the disadvantage of being nonexistent for a time means the opponent can concentrate firepower on the ghost. Phantom cannot then be a flanker. Keeping the phantom docked means a rear shot of 5 dice are possible at range 1, 4 at 2 and 3. I see the only benefit of deploying the phantom is if there's a bogey sitting at range 3 or out of arc. You could drop the phantom to roll 4 dice on range 1 shot negating the extra defense dice if you shot from the Ghost. Ghost may still get a turret shot as well.
Change the attack shuttle to 2 red dice and its a lot of points for some pretty lack luster combo. Who would deploy it when even at range 3 the ghost outputs more offense?

aka villain model main character plot armor. Just slightly weaker than hero main character plot armor. However Vader has an upgrade with the story continuity armor. You know the one that Mace Wendu never had?
