Special Modifications! Technician Career Book Announced!

By Dr Lucky, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

And I still wondering why it's such a big deal that they get presented in a book that isn't EotE.

I don't think anyone is saying that they'd rather not see them at all if they aren't in an EotE source...just that it would have probably been a better fit.

it only seems to be a "big deal" in the minds of the people who want it to be a big deal.

Without seeing what they do for them in Nexus of Power how can we say that EotE is the better fit?

And what many are failing to realize is I don't mind the use of Devaronians in a F&D book; I simply feel it's a bad fit as we've only seen three examples (in the EU) of Devaronian Jedi. Two of those were female. And one became a Sith Lord.

No I got what you were saying. I'm just trying to get at why it matters that it's a bad fit or how you can call it a bad fit without first seeing what is offered in this book and what is offered in Nexus of Power. Once we see Nexus of power we may come to realize that it's a very good fit, based on the material that they use and draw from. Or not. But we won't know if it's a good fit until at least Nexus of Power.

Oh, and bringing up that Jedi temple on Devaron? Well, I went back and watched that one episode... Turns out the Jedi were actually using that "temple" as a secret outpost to maintain control of the system. The CIS attacks the place and face a large number of clone scouts and only two Jedi - a master of some species I cannot identify and his padawan who is a Nautolan.

The temple also features in one of the canon novels as a place Luke goes to on his quest to learn more about the Force. While it has yet to happen by the time that the material in F&D takes place, the fact that it will figure prominently in the future of the setting indicates that the temple itself may be important.

The technicians!

Here we go!

They Have the Mission!

What a Show!

To repair the droooooiiids!

Could we get back on track?

I'm trying to figure out a lore-friendly R-series Ace.

And did anyone think of Squid for this book?

Iam at a loss, what do you mean by Squid?

Also a R-Ace eh? :D

Sorry for that. Actually doesn't sound that bad. In my opinion that would mean lorewise, that he was heavily modified and programmed on. Sadly I can't see him piloting Starfighters, except they modify them for him to be less esposed, but freighters should be no problem.

Mon Calamari is what, I think, is meant by 'squid'.

They are a good candidate, but I still need my Bith.

But so are Given.. And countless others.

Squib. I'd don't know how I did that.

I second that! I want Bith, too. But I guies we'll see them in the Engineer book since they are more like Scientists.

There are so many Species we still haven't gotten to....

I'd love to see the Mon Calamari show up in this book.

IMHO surely any race can be any thing, they are PC's who are supposed to be the exception to the norm, and this is Star Wars, where weird stuff happens all the time.

R7 Beast Rider pushes the envelope a lot more than an R7 pilot, and yet I can imagine a droid can gain an understanding of animals and development an attachment to one then find a way of "riding" it using some form of harnessing.

I'm trying to figure out a lore-friendly R-series Ace.

How about the RX-series pilot droid? [example: RX-24] Other pilot droid series include: FA-4 pilot droids, OOM pilot battle droid (CloneWars), FEG-series pilot droid (Legacy), and GD16-series pilot droid.
Or for an opponent, take a vulture droid (or tri-) and give it a heuristic processor and then model it on "SCAR" from Battlestar Galactica.
Or, honestly... don't get hung up on lore, canon, EU, blah, blah, blah. Just reskin a droid, make whatever tweaks you want and then make up a designation. Done.

Allow me to clarify: I like to design droid PCs using the droid adversaries as a template. I like to do so. Astromechs obviously have low Agility (rolling trash cans, people), but are often used to pilot fighters and vehicles, thus needing Piloting skills. Not an insurmountable problem, but an irritating one.

Like everything in an RPG the Agility characteristic is very abstracted. The agility used for coordination is very different to the agility used for piloting a swoop bike which is again different to the agility used for a Sil7 Cap ship. That's not even touching on the difference between Ranged Light, Ranged Heavy, Gunnery and Ataru. I can't see why an Astromec can't have at least a 3 Agility to represent upgraded sensors, rapid sensory processing speed, rapid fine motor control with utility arms, high data low latency buses for direct control connections to hardware. Then zero ranks in coordination combined with a good RP of not jumping and climbing.

A Wookiee can climb way better than a Mon Cal, but it's not exactly outlined in the rules. And yet a Mon could easily have a higher Agility to account for their impressive swimming abilities.

I'm also hoping to see the Givin soon.

Also, both the Sluisi and the Elomin would be interesting to see in a tech-related book (the latter would work best in Engineer, due to their ties to the Rebels).

(And seriously, I meant Squib. "Squid" would apply to the Quarren anyway, not the Mon Cal.)

I'd love to see the Mon Calamari show up in this book.

Mon Cals would make the most sense. They're iconic, associated with engineering, and haven't received an Edge treatment yet.

I'm playing a Gank Solider/Medic in AoR who is going to be very happy with the Cyber Tech spec.

Meanwhile, one of my Edge players is returning his Gadgeteer to service. I think he might like the look of the Modder.

In general, really excited to see this one, and happy that it looks like we're getting some really unique specs in the deal.

The book is now at the printer.

EDIT: dumb typo.

The book is not at the printer.

You mean "now," don't you?

I know it takes about 6-8 weeks for "On The Boat" (if the Dockyard Gods are merciful), but I've never paid attention to how long something stays in the "At the printer" phase. Anyone know how long that process is?

They say upwards of a few months, or when it's here, it's here, which is really about the only accurate status anymore....

Yeah, time at printer really can't be reliably tracked, as there's a plethora of variable as to when the book will actually get printed and then put onto a boat. Could be that it takes a while to get physically created due to prior jobs in the queue having a higher print run, could be that while it's physically printed fairly quickly, it sits in a warehouse for several weeks before getting loaded onto a boat.

It's things like that which have lead a lot of gaming companies to say "we'll announce the street date when the book is physically in our hands." I know Green Ronin has gotten bitten by that more times than they'd like, and thus dropped the idea of announcing release dates entirely other than "coming soon" or "it's now on shelves!"

Have we gotten any more information on this book? I haven't really been paying attention...

(It seems all the SW updates recently have been focused on Rebellion and X-Wing.)

Nope.

The up side this year is all the CRBs are out, so no beginner's game, no GM screen, so I'd think we'll be getting a pretty steady stream of books.

Yeah, nothing yet and I've been wearing out my F5 button in anticipation. . . .
