Tangential to the D&D next conversation, i'd recommend that everyone interested in a fantasy game pick up the cortex plus hacker's guide, there's a phrase in there that goes something like "a dungeon crawl is just a poorly planned heist" basically it adapts the leverage role-playing game to get more a more narrative fantasy game.

There's been a minor delay....

Cruel, so very cruel.
Well. . . it could be worse:
God, I'm so very, very sorry for that. Here, have some Freddie Mercury to make up for it. . . .
I'm afraid things might not be going well....

I often wondered how much of a loss that costs. And what kind of insurance picks up that bill.

Depending upon the cargo, it can be 500k+. The value of the cargo is usually based upon the wholesale and not retail price. There are insurance companies that specialize in insurance for cargoes being transported by ship or air.
The ship is the big loss. The cargo is peanuts compared to the decades of service lost by losing the ship.

You know, that's actually some very interesting potential inspiration for a sort of campaign that would be very different for a Star Wars RPG campaign.
Are space cargo vessels insured? Are the cargoes insured?
Could the PCs be hired as freelance investigators by an insurance company?
Would insurance companies hire bounty hunters to track down people they thought were defrauding them, or pirates targeting the ships they insure?
PCs as freelance salvage operators? The husband of a family friend is in this business, and he’s got some wacky stories….
Our group is currently just that. Hired salvagers for the Alliance. We mostly deal with the aftermath of space battles, mostly. Good coin in it too.

That works too, I like that.
'The PCs are hired to deliver crate-loads of RPG materials to an impatient and hostile gaming community on the very fringes of Galactic space. And all they have is a leaky FailBoat of a YT1300 and an angry wookiee mechanic to keep her ship-shape. And the Empire wants to get its hands on the new books at any cost...'

My PCs are this, too! I definitely don't have them always doing salvage work (they're the "away team" for a space-station-based salvage crew in orbit around Corellia), but it's great to see them want to break in half any Imperial ships after space combat because stealing an Imperial ship is illegal but salvaging one is business.
And we are Shipping Now, folks! So, what do you think? I Ship R4 unit and old Besalisk guy. I don't care that they're the couple on the cover, what they have is TRUE LOVE!!!1!1 *cries in the corner*

That was one fast boat.
Eh, five weeks and six days isn't exceptionally fast. It's faster than some (looking at you, Strongholds), but not lightning quick.
A fast container ship transit would be something like 3 weeks from load in southern Chile to unload in Elizabeth NJ or Vancouver BC.
Almost six weeks... not so fast.

Almost six weeks beats the average by a couple of days (and up to a week). So faster if not necessarily fast.
Still, I'll take it! We're still in the very early days of my Tech's gaming career. I guess that means I'd better start saving up my points for all those awesome new trees and Sig Abilities.
It's not just sail time. Is there a dock available? To load? Unload? Is the rail yard backed up at both ends? Bad weather? Some companies have started by passing certain routes like the Suez because of cheaper fuel prices even if it takes more time.
When I ordered a vehicle from fleet services Toyota I had a link and could track it from Japan to the US. Got here quick enough and then promptly sat in Port of LA for 3.5 weeks because of back up at the rail yard and docks.
Edited by 2P51I recall a time when it was 6 weeks like clockwork.

I got a package from Malaysia a few weeks back and my experience was very similar. Arrived in LA within a few days, then sat there for over a week, before it finally shipped to my house. It was so frustrating to check it everyday and see it not moving. I thought maybe they were striking again and it hadn't made the news.
I was hoping for a new preview but oh well.
