X-Wing at GenCon (Vote inside)

By XWingEvents, in X-Wing Organized Play

I'll be running X-Wing events this year at GenCon. While we all know Nationals is run at that time, what side events would you like to see run that you would play in?

A few concepts we are trialing are:

  • All Mixed Up (Factionless tournament with some restrictions)
  • Escalation events (60/90/120/150)
  • Behemoth (Large ships only)
  • Swarm (Small ships only)
  • Aces (only PS 8/9 pilots)
  • Rookies (only PS 1/2/3 pilots)
  • 2v2 Team Build (60-75 points each - table talk not allowed but each side can control a faction of its choosing)
  • Simple Squads (no upgrades, no duplicate ships)

What do you think?

Comment with your suggestions and if you will be attending as well! We will have a mailing list put up soon.

OOOOh, fun! I'd love to see a Large only tourney, and/or perhaps the Rookies. Factionless intrigues as well

Aces High!

Escalation is always my vote.

Also, I heard one store does a tournament where each match players flip a coin/roll a red dice and on a heads/hit, swap squads. It's a fun one because players still need to bring a good squad, since they are only 50% likely to swap them. I'd play that!

Escalation, hands down. Escalation is under-represented in general and that format offers so much more creative license in squadron design.

Can we get a 2v2 tourney? If not, escalation seems interesting...

Hmm, had not considered 2v2. How many points? What kind of rules? Allowed to show dials to partners? Table talk allowed?

Escalation and Rookies would be my vote. Although unlikely I will make GenCon. (Been wanting to for 20 yrs and haven't made it yet)

Escalation is under represented

Probably can't call it as such but a Hunger Games format would be interesting. Perhaps called Gladiator?

What is an Escalation event?

Will be attending, pending acts of god. Ranked in order of preference with comments.

Behemoth (Large ships only)

- Could be really awesome, but might need a higher point cap like 120ish maybe? because of the cost of the large ships. Though it might be interesting to see a few upgradeless generics duke it out also.

Rookies (only PS 1/2/3 pilots)

- Now this looks interesting, PS bids at 3, go for swarms or fully upgraded rookies? Might be more interesting to have it either include PS 4 for the low hanging Aces, or forget pilot skill and just say "No Named Pilots"

All Mixed Up (Factionless tournament with some restrictions)

-Could be Really fun, but this mostly hinges on what the restrictions are

Aces (only PS 8/9 pilots)

- Who the best dog fighter, i see so many Poe and Soontir Battles.

Swarm (Small ships only)

- Could be fun, though it seams a little vanilla, I would much rather see this combined with the Aces, or Rookies option.

Escalation events (60/90/120/150)

- Escalation is always fun, and the most common non-standard format I've seen.

Other options not from the original Post. And i'm just spitballing and expanding on what has already been mentioned here. Throwing Ideas at the wall, some might stick, some might stink.

2v2 - could be interesting, Allow table talk and showing of dials to your partner (spaceships have radios right?) but maybe change the points around, not 200 per person, maybe 100-150 per team, so 50-75 per person. Standard Rules, but maybe instead of one side being a faction, each person is a faction. So you could have Reb+Imp vs Imp+Scum, or Imp+Imp vs Reb+Scum. This could almost be combined with any of the other options. One team mate can only use large ships the other small, One teammate can only use named pilots, the other cannot use named pilots, things like that.

Worst Squad Wins - Build a 100 point squad same as normal rules, but put a minimum squad point number aswell, something like 95-98 points to prevent abuse. The key is you never fly your squad, you only fly against it. The players swap squads when they are paired up. So Player A and Player B are paired up, A flies B's squad, and B Flies A's Squad. If player A is later pair vs player C, then A flies C's Squad, and C flies A's squad. Could be interesting.

Squad Leader - Each Side can only have 1 named Pilot, that pilot gets a squadleader upgrade that does not take a EPT slot, nor does it cost any squad points. No other named pilots can be used in the squad.

Pre-Set lists - Have FFG Make several ship Lists, but with no upgrades attached. Players can choose from one of the lists, and pick their own upgrades. Who can Kit their pilots out the best, and fly them the best? Leaves room for customization, but also adds a fun twist to the list. Maybe even have some custom pilots just for the Event, then give them away as promo cards or something (depending on the cost to do so)

Not So Epic - Allow some of the smaller epic ships into normal play, like the rebel transport, and the Carrier.

Escort - Player with initiative gets control of a Lamba Shuttle w/a permanent weapons disabled token. With the objective of flying it off their opponent's edge for significant bonus points, If their opponent destroys it they get the bonus points. If either squad is wiped out before one of those two things happen, no one gets the bonus.

Asteroid Field - Players may only Pick Asteroids as Obstacles. Instead of stationary asteroids at the end of each round, in initiative order, players may move one asteroid each in any direction using the 1 forward (or maybe the 2 forward) maneuver template, asteroids do not have to follow the normal placement rules (range 1 from each other, and range 2 of any edge) for these movements, if any part of the asteroid goes off the edge of the play area the asteroid is removed. The Asteroid cannot be moved so it would be under a ship's base, but may be moved out from under a ship's base (no weaponizing asteroids).

Take whats useful, ditch what isn't. I might throw up some more ideas eventually. Either way i look forward to seeing you all at GenCon =)

Why not Epic? Require the use of Huge ship points so it isn't 100% a collection of regular ships.

Or maybe combine with Armada -- the Armada games play out the capital ship maneuvers and the X-wings play out the fighter combat. Makes for slow Armada games but the X-wing battles will determine many of the engagements.

What is an Escalation event?

Escalation is where you must build incrementally across 4 rounds. You start with a 60 point squad, then add 30 points for each of the next 3 rounds. You cannot move upgrades or change ships in your build, only add to it.
