Darth Vader ability (Admiral)

By SaXoNUK1, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

With regards to DV’s admiral ability, I don’t understand why everyone thinks it’s so good as, as I’m reading it you; reroll any number of dice you want for each defence token you discard. Therefore you can only do it once per defence token and then that token is gone for the rest of the game ? Now I understand that this would be good for the evade tokens on ships you want to get in close, Glad’s especially. However why would you want to permanently discard a defence token when there are upgrade cards that can boost your offence every turn without the negative effects of losing a defence token? I understand that rerolling any and all your dice is pretty big but it’s a one off and diminishes your defence every time you use it.

Or have I totally read it wrong ?

Spend is not the same as discard.

You spend a readied token (green side up) you flip it to it's red side.

You spend a exhausted token (red side up) you discard it.

Edit:

RRG P 4:

Defense tokens begin the game on their readied side. When a readied defense token is spent, it is flipped to its exhausted side. When an exhausted defense token is spent, it is discarded.

So I can exhaust a defence token every turn to re roll any number of attack dice (and I can do this per attack as long as I have an unspent defence token) and then it refreshes, as normal, in the end phase ? OK now I get why Papa Skywalker is so good !

There you have it.

Your only risk is that you might re-roll and spent a token to Exhausted, and then find you might need that token as actual defense. :)

Nk nym and Intel officers are working together to tease Vader XD

If you think that's crazy, match his ability with Devastator's text.

Once per attack! Not multiple times per attack.

Once per attack! Not multiple times per attack.

One per round, but yeah.

And I mean... four red and eight blue are nothing to sneeze at.

Still, just the other day I had a Gladiator hit with this handful of dice and, somehow, despite every die having a chance at an accuracy, he rolled nothing but single damage. I can only imagine the grin on my face could be charitably described as "sh#t eating".

Who suffer the Vader wrath when I shot with my ISD and reroll with Vader to get blanks?... disturbing... :D

"While attacking..." is also the limiting factor there to Darth Vader.

But perhaps he was referring to Devastator being Once Per Round and not Once Per Attack , as most of those other cards are? :)

Screed is once per round. Vader does not have that limitation but the FAQ has stated that upgrade cards can only be used once per attack.

I was talking about Devastator.

If by "unspent" you mean "not discarded" then yes, but you can trigger Vader even with exhausted tokens if you'd like. For example, you could use Vader to spend an exhausted token, then trigger Devastator for the extra die.
