Red Ace and Comms Relay Timing?

By TasteTheRainbow, in X-Wing Rules Questions

"Red Ace" — T-70 X-Wing 29

R2-D2 4

Comm Relay 3

Autothrusters 2

Ship Total: 38

What happens if this guy is hit with 2 damage? Does the evade land after the first shield is removed and block the second damage? Or does it just take 2 damage and block some future damage with the evade?

Evade tokens don't block damage, they can be spent during the defender's modify dice step to add an [evade] result. At the point you're dealing damage, it's too late to use evade tokens.

By the time you get to Compare Dice you've already past the opportunity to Modify Defense Die. The Evade token will have to be used when defending against another attack.

Oh duh. Thanks.

This maybe an old threat, but im a new player! In any case, with this combo, once you removed a shield you will have an evade token for future combat rounds all-the-time, right?

On the basis that R2 adds a shield back that you can trigger Red Ace's ability with, yeah. Obviously you won't always have an evade token because at some point you'll spend it without losing a shield, but I doubt you're looking for that kind of pedantry :P

Not quite all the time. Here's text from "Red Ace" : The first time you remove a shield token from your ship each round, assign 1 evade token to your ship.

You only get an evade from the first shield lost, so you can only gain one per round. In addition Comm Relay only allows you to hold one evade token at a time so you can't stack evades.

What all this means is that you will always have an evade as long as you are only damaged once per round and you always do green moves. As soon as Red gets focused by multiple attackers you will end up with no evade.
