Mouse Guard with Edge of the Empire

By MuttonchopMac, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

To make the work easier on you, I would start with the AoR careers as is then start replacing names and skills when needed. AoR since Mouse Guard seems more militaristic then fringe.

For example, careers could be Commander, Diplomat, Craftsman (from Engineer), Guardsman (from Soldier), and Scout (from Spy). If you need a naval career (never read Mouse Guard) then convert Ace to Sailor. Or Ace to Beast Rider?

An example of a specialty might be Soldier-Sharpshooter becoming Guardsman-Archer. Glancing at the Talents and Skills, you may not need to rename or redefine much. Talents might work as is. Ranged (light) could include spears, slings, rocks, thrown knives while Ranged (heavy) becomes longbows, crossbows, shortbows. Possibly divide Melee into Melee (light) and Melee (heavy) since it's a middle ages setting with a military slant.

Completely designing Mouse Guard from the ground up to use FFG's narrative dice would be a huge endeavor. Reskinning AoR might be much easier for you.

Would it be that terrible to simply replace Mouse Guard's dice with green dice from EotE and graft EotE's combat system on in place of conflicts? I mean, you can play MG pretty well without even ever breaking out the conflict rules as long as you don't feel like going over an altercation in exacting detail. Your odds of rolling a success on the standard MG dice are the same as rolling one on an ability die, so the substitution should be relatively painless. You would have to change how fate points work, but otherwise it seems like a simpler fix than trying to rework every mechanic if the conflict system is the only thing you dislike.

So.. I picked up the 2nd edition boxed set, as a Christmas gift for my son (and myself). I like the game, but my boy wants to use "the star wars dice." Honestly, so do I, for the same reasons as the OP.

A quick search revealed this thread, so I figured I'd post, maybe get some feedback.

I don't intend to bother with careers or talents, and I will keep the Raw Abilities (characteristics):

  • Nature (Cunning, Intelligence)
  • Will (Willpower, Presence)
  • Health (Brawn, Agility)

Simplified, but sufficient for the purposes of this game, I think. Mouse Guard Skills will be based upon the relevant characteristic, and be upgraded for each rank, just as it would be in FFG's system. Advancement.. I like MG's concept of needing a number of successful checks and failed checks, in order to increase a skill's rank, and think I will incorporate it.

Traits.. feel more like they would be akin to FFG's Obligation/Duty/Morality mechanic.. not sure..? Or I might just let them flavor play on a situational basis, applying Boosts or Setbacks when appropriate?

edit to add: Probably do away with Fate and Persona Points, and use a Destiny Point system.

If anyone has any input, and would care to revisit this topic, I look forward to your replies. Thanks!

Use genesys with a much more limited range of talents and their talent hierarchy rather then career tree.

I'm sure many would port easily over.

Also their superhero idea of a charecteristic or 2 you specializing that can cause exploding dice (a sixes means another roll and so on) would work well here. Just some thoughts I'm only familier with mouse Goddard not an expert.

Okay.. change of plans..

Per my seven-year-old son's wishes, I will be giving Mouse Guard the full Star Wars treatment:

  • Lightsabers? You bet!
  • Blasters, too? Sure!
  • Force use? Of course!

I have a rough plan for my Mouse Guardians at the Edge of the Empire . They will begin play, in the background of the Rebels cartoon, on Lothal. Anthropomorphic encounters with Loth-cats and edgehawks are a given, but eventually they will end up as uninvited guests on the Ghost , with Hera and the crew. I'm envisioning epic battles with the Seventh Sister's little ID9 spider droids, and the like, but would like to probe the community for ideas.

Obviously, I will be scaling things for our tiny heroes, so.. daring missions infiltrating a star destroyer by hacking mouse droids..?

Give me your best encounter ideas!

Talents, weapons, force use.. all will be scaled for mouse-size..

Dare I actually introduce.. stoat-troopers ? Without an actual, rodent-sized Empire to rebel against, I'm not sure where I'm taking this..

Just kind of brainstorming, so if you've read this far.. thanks.

Re skinning is easy, here he created a unique look at what makes Mousguard and EotE good for him. I liked it so far @MuttonchopMac !

It also works with my plans to genesys an "post-apocalyptic anthropomorphic fantasy" campaign, so thanks for the push :)

Despite the underwhelming response, I will continue to pester the community here; the Mouse Guard forum is defunct, anyhow.

Today's session, we played our regular SW game, so I have at least another week to get my thoughts together for the mice. I'm thinking I'll scrap the Rebels tie-in, and do my own thing.. Mice in the Jedi Temple, post Order 66..? Entrusted to hide a memory crystal.. or holocron.. maybe seek out the next generation of force-sensitives..?

Maybe the Mouse Guardians are given assignments from a renegade Pathfinder who survived the purge, at least for a time..

Their Nemesis could be.. an Inquisitor, also with some Pathfinder talents.. or perhaps an ISB officer..?

I'm picturing a very Bond - esque villain..

Of course, the mouse conspiracy would be a pet project.. probably not something you'd want to take to Vader..

Maybe the Stoat runs his own Mustelid agents to hunt the rebel mice?

Crunch-wise.. don't think I'm bothering with blasters at the start.. Mouse-sized sabers will be effective versus "mouse scale" adversaries.. but probably only do minimal damage to larger foes.. possibly as Strain.. Triumphs might still crit..?

For those of you who might actually be familiar with Mouse Guard lore.. the Dark Glaive will supplant the Black Axe. Basically a mouse-scaled lightsaber pike, with a relatively thicker beam, which would be somewhat more effective against larger foes. Darksaber-esque , perhaps?

Oh, and here:

Thanks again, and don't hesitate to comment with input or ideas.

Why are only her boobs armored?

C'mon.. We're talking about a comic book villain.. Bond villain..

Of the available concept art, I liked the white, with the black boots and armor. Rule of Cool. Matches the white stoat, with its black-tipped tail.

Let's just call it an armored sports bra, with built-in trauma meshing.

Or..

Our villain is not as buxom as she appears..

The armored halter actually conceals the housing for twin kyber-dart firing mechanisms, loaded with mouse-tranq!

She hopes to capture our tiny heroes alive, and conduct tests with her Sith alchemy.. Can these vermin actually use the force..?!

Ah, like Tom Savini's crotch gun from From Dusk Till Dawn ? Got it!
