With the new wave 2 being as strong as it is, I get the feeling FFG is trying to make the game run faster. I haven't been playing for a while since it hasn't taken off here at my FLGS, but I remember playing and it took a while especially teaching a new player. What is everyone's average play time now? Do you notice a faster finish with the bigger ships since they can one shot small ships?
Power Level Creep
To be fair we kind of expected something like this with the glaring omission of the Imperial and mention of Large ships in the Rules Reference Guide. I'd say Armada has reached a level of completion right now, but escalation from here? I don't think so. Not unless FFG decides to roll out Super Star Destroyers... then Torpedo spheres...
Any sudden decrease in play-time was brought back up with the points increase. ISDs can punch out smaller ships like voting chaff but now a player can take more of them and stay in the game for longer.
Edited by NorsehoundThese things come and go. When Wave 1 released, people thought the VSD was done for and the GSD was the only game in town. People also dismissed squadrons. Then, without any change in the underlying components of the game, that changed. The VSD came back, and squadrons started to rule the spacefield of battle.
(I'd like to say the same thing about the Assault Frigate, but the CR90/Neb-B seem to have remained the red-headed step-children of the game - but who knows what might happen now with Wave 2 and the release of R&V. With more of a squadrons game, I think the Escort Frigate and its two AA blues might become popular again.)

What I mean is that the Core Set, wave 1 and wave 2 are what they envisioned when they designed the game. There is no real "power creep" because this was the intended level of power in the first place.

How can you say this after my 5 Nebulon-B's!(I'd like to say the same thing about the Assault Frigate, but the CR90/Neb-B seem to have remained the red-headed step-children of the game - but who knows what might happen now with Wave 2 and the release of R&V. You would not be singing their praises if you had played against me in that tournament. You would be scurrying back to your space potatoes like a whipped cur!
Also, you know that you chose a Neb-B list precisely because they are the red-headed stepchild of the game.
Neb-Bs are legit, it's just most people are not ![]()
seriously, Yavaris will out perform an ISD with 2-bwings and Salvation is practically auto-include in every non-akbar rebel fleet. Can't imagine a better use of the 65 points than the railgun that flies like a ship
in this era of ISD-2, the basic naked Neb is just a solid investment. It punches well, and it won't get very easily one-shot like the cr-90 tends to do, making it a very stable core relative to your other options. If squadrons take off, the escort is the go-to rebel flak ship and it can even support your own squadrons to boot
just gotta fly it properly is all

We can test this FridayYou would not be singing their praises if you had played against me in that tournament. You would be scurrying back to your space potatoes like a whipped cur!
It'll probably have to wait 'till the tournament. It's that time of the term.

Anyway, the point being - no, there isn't power creep, there's just meta evolution and the flavor of the month. The best advice is to be a step ahead of it. Figure out what the Achilles heel of the current meta is, and play that. With Wave 2 - yes, things will be weird. I certainly have not figured out the new squadrons just yet, which have really changed matters. So, figuring out the Achilles heel is hard. But that may just mean a new configuration of old things will take people by surprise.
It can sure feel like power creep with all the new shiny flying around but the definition of power creep is when the new shiny replaces the old. So far I've seen a lot of new combos and ways to build awesome fleets but nothing so far has been completely replaced. Every ship/fighter has its niche - might not fit in all lists but everything's got a home so far.

I hope they give the CR and Nebs more fun things to do. Doing weird turn shenanigans going in and out of arcs will get boring after a while.

Yeah I would agree with this statement.

TRC?
CR90: Ackbar + TRC + H-9s.
That's funny...unless you're on the receiving end of 5 of them.
TRC? Turbolaser Re-route circuits? You can't take those with H9s, the CR-90 has only one turbolaser slot. It's one or the other.

Grrr...I was trying to type H-6, like the Scurrg.
CR90s supported by Scurrgs are ANNOYING AS HELL! They do a squad command, you get a blue and a black in the face, then they TRC you, either with Ackbar or a double-arc. Or, later in the game, the CF and the Scurrgs pick at you in the squad phase.
I don't think FFG intend to do it, but they do mess up with their points. So the more cards we get, the more mistakes there will be. Cough cough Ackbar, TRC, APT.
Still a great game and I love it of course, but if I were the designer...
Cards would only have their rules printed, no cost. The cost would be on a pdf for download that could be updated. So if in 3 waves time they wanted to increase the cost of the VSD1 to 74 and decrease the VSD2 to 84 (and similarly with the whale), they could.
Edited by Muff2nHaving costs printed on their cards eliminates the need for additional online documents.
What's wrong with the cost of any of those three cards you mentioned?
I've seen something like one thread talking about how useless some cards are, partly because of their cost, but otherwise I haven't seen a lot of people complaining about the cost of any particular upgrades. Generally the game feels well balanced, yes?
I still don't think there's power creep. There's more attractive options that have shown up, but they do not obsolete the mainstays.

... Yes, I was hoping to get the basis for that opinion.
