Mon Mothma a coward in the new canon?

By RogueCorona, in X-Wing Off-Topic

I was reading the wookieepedia article on the canon Battle of Endor and it says that according to the Return of the Jedi Beware the Power of the Dark Side novelization Mon Mothma wasn't actually at the battle of Endor because at the last minute before her ship would have jumped to Endor she ordered it to jump to some hiding place to await news of the battle's results. Has anyone read the book to confirm this, and does it mention what class her ship was? If it was a warship like she usually traveled on during this period in the Legends timeline its absence might have cost a number of Alliance lives during the battle IMO.

Well she's a politician not a warrior, so coward is a viable option.

Yeah, I never would have expected her to be at the actual battle. What would she contribute? I'm more concerned that some author thinks her ship would have been scheduled to go to Endor in the first place.

Honestly her not being present wouldn't bother me except that I'm wondering just what her personal ship was. In legends it was either an MC80 or a Dreadnaught, even if it was a CR90 in canon the ship could have made much more of a difference then her presence or lack thereof.

I would really hesitate to call the leader of the Rebellion and one of the prime opponents of the Emperor a coward.

It would make no sense for her to be there. If the battle was lost they needed some piece of the rebellion left over.

A CR-90 wouldn't of made a real difference at Endor. Having her survive the battle would however, no matter how it turns out.

It would of needed to be a MC-80 before it would of really mattered, and I think it's hard to believe that the Rebel Alliance would ever use a MC-80 like that.

Considering what went down at Endor, the only battle that really mattered involved only three participants. One can argue that the Rebellion would have been better off if Luke would have assumed command of the Death Star after the demise of both Palpatine and Vader. Who would have stopped him?

I have now read that bit in the wookieepedia article and I think you're interpreting it wrong.

all, except for Mon Mothma's ship, which after a moment, she ordered to take her to a safe hiding place to await news of the impending battle

I would say that she didn't jump with the fleet to ensure she could safely jump without anyone captured at Endor knowing and thus revealing where she went.

That has nothing to do with cowardice though.

Politicians hide themselves away,
They only started the war.
Why should they go out to fight,
They leave that role to the poor.

Well apparently in the new canon she trained as a fighter pilot but back on the original topic if the Alliance lost Endor its not like her surviving by hiding away would do any good. Her staying in hiding while the rest of the rebel fleet was attacking would destroy her credibility as a leader even if enough of the rebel fleet survived to keep up the fight.

That's nonsense. If the fleet would've been destroyed she would've been able to tap into the rest of the resources to rekindle the rebellion.

There is a reason heads of state left their countries when invaded during WW2: they serve as a rallying point and inspiration. When captured or killed, all they are is a weapon for the enemy.

War is old politicians sending young soldiers to die.

She would of added little.

Mon Mothma on the front line is like sending Ghandhi out with a helmet on his head and a rifle in hand.

There are a lot of other things a politician can and should be doing when anticipating a major battle or conflict: getting food, water, medical supplies, caskets; preparing to drum up support regardless of which side wins; preparing a plan of retreat if your side loses; planning how to leverage your victory after losing hundreds to thousands of men and women.

True. I guess I'm used to the fact that in Star Wars non-evil politicians are usually shown as on or near the frontlines at times rather then hanging back.. Leia, Padme, even Bail a couple of times during TCW

My gut tells me that politicians have no business on the front lines and should leave fighting wars to the military. Guiding the big-picture goals of a war? Sure. Storming a beach? Not so much.

Depends, you couldn't be a succesful Roman politician if you had no military experience.

I'm sure there's more than a few people around the world that would love to send their political leaders to the front and "out on point".

Given how sh*tty some political leaders are.... yeah.

I think a good rule would be "If you knowingly manipulated your country into an illegal war, you should be on the front lines of the next one"...

I'd recommend editing that post of yours. Some people might find it offensive, and that kind of political talk will get you a warning pretty quick.

I won't report you, but this thread could derail rather quickly....

Yeah, you're probably right.

Frankie goes to Hollywood just picked up your post out of the timestream and wrote a hit song about it.

Forget Mon Mothma, what tha hell was Leia doing in the commando unit sent to Endor?!? I guess having her at Hoth made sense, maybe, and she could b excused for going to rescue her boyfriend when he done got frozen, but yeah, she was basically Mon Mothma's understudy in the Rebellion, and a senator just like her, so why was she directly ordering troops or entering combat?

Because she is a bad-ass.
