Just reading up on all the missiles/torps as I generally don't give them the time of day and the ion torp sounds pretty jazzy!
If anyone does use them who do you give them to?

Not me.
I keep thinking about it, but they're pricey and need a ship that can modify some dice after firing them. They do force some pretty rough decisions on an opponent, and have some damage capacity in their own right.
if you know you're heading in against a swarm:
Redline
FCS
EM
Ion Torps
Assault Missiles.
Ions to hold and Assault to punish.

Good point, if I'm reading it right though they have the potential to one shot a 4HP ship and then ion everything else in R1? That's really good.....if you can pull it off.
They might see some play post wave 8. There could be a lot more swarms on the table and the S-Thread Tracers could help ordnance quite a bit. Right now they are pretty limited. Most squads I see are 3 to 5 ships, and most don't need to fly in tight formation to be effective.
I would definitely throw them into an epic list though.
Edited by Jo JoFor Scum, Drea Renthal is a good torpedo-thrower. Give her R4-B11 and Extra Munitions, and she'll give a swarm something to think about.

or if they're close to the edge (or close enough) double Ion Torps. while you reposition your ships in to either block the attempt at getting back in to the fight or go for the throat. two waves of Ion torps then one of Assualt missiles.
I'll be throwing them on my epic ships. But currently they suffer the same problem as most ordnance does - difficult to get a TL, can't modify the results, 1 (or 2) time shot, counter to specific lists/ships that if you don't face, make the 5 points useless, etc.
I could see using them in Epic games, but I have never used one in a regular 100 pt game. Perhaps this Christmas the Imperial ships will roll in and I'll fire one...
I was thinking about using them with my 87 point Corran Poe build but I stopped flying it before I tried it. The idea is to use torps instead of the arguably useless Z. Since I have 11 points after weapons guidance on Poe with nothing else to spend them on and the requisite action economy to actually pull them off, figured Proton Torps and perhaps APT's or Ion Torps on Corran.
But yeah, they're too expensive and your opponent's dumb autowin ace is going to shrug them off anyways. Like bombs, they were balanced with the, "But this could ionize 8 TIE Fighters, omg that has to be expensive!!!" mindset. Like how APT's were balanced with the, "But 5 attack dice, whoa, that's super powerful!!!" mindset, only for someone with bad ideas to break the game with 4 dice FCS gunner Phantom shenanigans.
It's that pre-broken game wave 1-3 mindset that most ordnance comes from.
For Scum, Drea Renthal is a good torpedo-thrower. Give her R4-B11 and Extra Munitions, and she'll give a swarm something to think about.
This is a pretty excellent point. I'll also add that the Ion Torpedo is the highest attack dice Ion weapon in the game, so if you find that you really need to ion something with high AGI, it might be an option.
Aside from Drea, it might have a place on the torpedo boat build of a Jumpmaster 5k.
Also, if my hoped for Scum EPT ever comes out that allows you to target a friendly ship, these would be amazing.
Have a build with Dutch, Garven and Nera ... Had Nera one shot a z at R3, ioned four other ships ..
Another time with redline, hit a y.wing and ioned it, two zs and b.wing..
Was very nice
I'll admit that I mis-read this one ages ago. I didn't know it still does the 4 red dice damage and then Ionizes everything. I thought it was just no damage and Ionize everything. I've used ordnance and never used that one.
It would be great on Horton as he gets to re-roll all blanks. What's not to love about this Torpedo?
It is expensive, but Extra Munitions does make it worthwhile. With no modifications, like the Proton Torp or Concussion Missiles, then you probably would want to use it with someone who can help out in that degree. There are methods that can do that.
I might have to try this out.

you mis-read it because it is the SOLE ION EFFECT that does NOT cancel dice rolled.
and the only way besides Dace bonehead to do more than 1 damage with an ion effect.
Edited by Panic 217Yep. Extra munitions is essential. So is fielding a lot of points. Which is why this has been relegated to Epic on my lists...
Using it with Ordnance Tubes and Weapons Teams for Epic are a great idea. Ionization will draw down epic ships' energy and will also Ionize formations of enemy ships. How about Ionizing a formation coming at you and then going to ramming speed the next turn? Use Engineering team or RAC crew to boost movement, as well.
Nera could make this interesting as well but that is a LOT of points in a B-wing. Could also use recspec and deadeye but is two points more expensive.

Ion doesn't work mostly.
For fel-downing purposes use the Trademarked Flechett+Failsafe. for mere 3 points you can stress the bastard again and again!
Give them to Miranda and spend a shield for a 5dice attack.

Nera Dantels (26)
Push the Limit (3)
Extra Munitions (2)
Ion Torpedoes (5)
Total: 36
The missile boat that Biophysical was talking about would allow you to fire with TL and focus.
Dengar (33)
Deadeye (1)
Extra Munitions (2)
Ion Torpedoes (5)
Recon Specialist (3)
R4 Agromech (2)
Total: 46
I think the 2 points for RecSpec/Deadeye is well spent, though. Not requiring a Target Lock and having flexible firing options is a really big deal to a PS5 pilot.
Ion torpedoes are amazing in epic. Step 1: Shoot ion torpedoes into a formation. Step 2: Watch a bunch of ships get run over by epic ships. I have killed a lot of ships this way in epic matches. Optional step 3: Offer your condolences to your opponent when their epic ship team kills a formation of their ships.
Standard ordnance issues apply to Ion Torpedoes: Cost effectiveness, need for a target lock, bad action economy, range limitations, limited uses.
I thought about featuring Ion torpedoes in a list based on using control elements to deliver a powerful Proton Rocket attack, but I eventually decided it was too situational and generally ineffective. That was pre-extended munitions, but I think my conclusion is still basically right.
Epic may be an interesting exception, although I think assault missiles would probably be the better choice in most cases.
Corran is the only thing I've tried them with. FCS to set up the double tap, you
Can crush a y-wing and ionize it's friends, which makes finding the TLT blind spot very easy.
