Just a noob question: Force Rating increase

By kelpie, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

How can be increased force rating of a characther?

i intended to be increased only with the "+1 force rating" talent, so you should pick a specialization who has this talent in talent tree and follow it until them... right?

i'm asking because i noticed some talent tree lacks the "+1 force rating" so i'm wondering if someone of them (ie a duelist) has another way to increase force rating than pick a second specialization

At this point the talent is the only way to increase your force rating. As you noticed, some specializations don't have force rating increases, some don't have dedication. Personally I'm planning to take Sage at some point for the force rating and grit talents.

The lightsaber trees (except for Niman Disciple) do not have the Force Rating talent on purpose. It's a balance consideration for playing in a tree that allows you to use a lightsaber in more effective and entertaining ways.

That being said; some day I will play a Niman Disciple/Sage, or a Makashi Duelist/Seer, and it will be glorious...

Me too .... though I'm getting a chance to play in a PbP ... which is probably the only chance I'll ever get, lol.

Yeah, as noted the fact that 5 of the 6 Lightsaber Form specializations don't have the Force Rating talent is very deliberate.

A large part of that is those 4 of those LS Form specs all have either Improved Parry or Improved Reflect, while Soresu Defender has both talents. Improved Parry can get nasty once lightsabers get involved, especially as the PCs modify the crystals to push the damage ratings up, and Improved Reflect has just as much of a chance to be devastating with the right combination of talents (notably Defensive Circle to ramp up the PC's Ranged Defense and up the odds of the attacker generating 3 Threat). I'm playing an Ataru Striker and a modified Shii-Cho Knight in two different games, and that Improved Parry talent can be brutal given how much damage the lightsabers of those two characters can inflict using just their base damage value.

Niman Disciple gets neither of those talents, and in fact has its Force Rating talent buried pretty deep in the spec, with a minimum XP cost of 130 to reach it, far more than pretty much any of the other Force and Destiny specs in the game currently. Part of that reason is Niman Disciple has the Lightsaber skill, and some pretty nifty telekinetic talents that make having a higher Force Rating pretty handy.

As for boosting Force Rating for those 5 LS Form specs that don't have the Force Rating talent, primary method is to simply buy into another spec that does offer the talent and buy it that way. You can even get some solid mileage out of the Force Exile and Force Emergent universal specs from the EotE and AoR core rulebooks respectively.

Force rating in lightsaber trees corresponds to how much force is used in their combat, Niman is a form that uses a lot of force powers in its style.

Right, which is the one design concession that Sam Stewart mentioned on our show was getting serious scrutiny during testing. Narratively it made a lot of sense, but mechanically they wondered if it was "too good". Ultimately buried the Force Rating talent deep into the tree, but for a while there they thought about pulling Force Rating from Niman, too.

well, if you at least GM this game, you're in better position than me :(
